Penn State coach suspended.

No, if you came God would say, "welcome my lad, what took you so long?" At the end of Revelation it says, "whosoever will may come". God beckons and does not reject those who come to Him.
Killing him softly.

Minor...unless thats your son...
Minor...if that is public game behavior, imagine how a bad practice goes.

I figured he would be put on leave, investigation of his behavior, then a decision to keep or release him.
Couldn't agree more!

IF...... I had a son who managed to obtain a division one scholarship on athletics, I wouldn't have had an issue with this specific incident. And I don't believe teachers should put their hands on students in the class room. This is sports and a very competitive level.

Does no one else see the irony of this given the school?

McHoop
My daughter is a 3rd grade teacher at a school with a lot of children with behavior issues. Students have thrown chairs at her tried to punch her and one tripped her. She is a young and pretty teacher that is well liked. Imagine how they treat mean old teachers they don't like. The meanest kid in my day wouldn't have tried any of that crap.

Kids have no fear today. They know the worst they will get is a short suspension from school. It is a badge of honor for them. I behaved because I didn't want the humiliation of getting a paddling at school and an equal punishment at home. One paddling hurt my pride. The other hurt my ass. I have no scars or mental anguish over the discipline I received.

The administration got ahead of the soon-to-follow foofaraw which would have been brought on by some student rights group resulting in Chambers being fired and the AD having to resign.

Pat Chambers has been suspended one game for shoving a player during a time out.

One other thing that was interesting about the situation---the reactions by the PSU players the next game. They really came out and half-assed things the game he was suspended. I remember when Knight would get thrown out of games---the players never rallied. Of course part of it in our case was probably because they knew he's be a wild man after the game. But I think the principle almost always holds--basketball teams don't usually react well when coaches are booted in the middle of a game or suspended.

i got paddled in the 4th grade and again as a senior in high school from a guy who played in the world football league. i am scarred, unlike you. to this day i haven't watched a world football league game

Let me get this straight. The same Penn State that showed a gross lack of concern for the well being and health of their quarterback McSorely by allowing him to play the second half of their New Years Day Bowl Game against Kentucky with a broken bone in his foot or ankle, suddenly found the moral high ground and is protecting its student athletes from abuse by their Coaches. What's wrong with this picture?

As it still should be today. Youth are growing up with no respect for authority..

Well....it it happened here it technically could be a misdemeanor Battery as a 'rude, insolent, or angry touching'. But yes, pretty minor, and sometimes common sense prevails. I think an apology would be in order. That should have been sufficient.
A misdemeanor? Really? That looked like nothing to me.

My junior high science teacher gave me regular whacks with his paddle. One day, I came into class and leaned on his desk. He asked what I was doing and I told him he might as well give my punishment before class than during class. After getting paddled for things I didn't think I deserved, I started doing things to purposely piss him off. My favorite was when he was demonstrating static electricity on an apparatus that made his hair stand up. I showed I understood the lesson by reaching up and shocking him on top of his bald head.

a lifetime wasted. and when you die you won't find that out
So how exactly have I wasted my life? I love the Lord and His love has caused me to love others a lot better than I ever would have. When I get stressed I go to the Lord. When I am sad I go to the Lord. When something good happens I praise Him. When others have troubles I go to Him. What exactly have I wasted? Jesus said in Mark 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Now THAT is a wasted life.

I'm floored by the responses on here. The coach clearly shoved his player, and that's not ok. It has nothing to do with being overly PC or manning up, it's very simply right and wrong. The punishment seems fair. It's both ineffective and wrong. Very simple. Just because it's sport doesn't mean the rules don't apply. Coaches need to be grown ups, too.

why doesn't your lord step in and stop sickos from raping, torturing and killing beautiful small children?

My Elementary/Jr. High principal never smiled and he paddled even Jr. High Students. Raising the severity of the paddling to an older student's higher level of pain tolerance. Your rear end would hurt far more, and far longer, than his bald head from the static shock you gave him. You feared the Principal. That fear kept every student in line. You could also hear him screaming at students that were sent to the Principal's office. That also kept students in line, and kept them paying attention in class. The student coming back from the principal's office always had their head down and their cocky smile was wiped off of their face. There were consequences to bad behavior. So students quickly behaved.

Yep. If you knowingly touch another person in an angry manner, it's a B-Misdemeanor in Indiana. Of course, not every event that could be charged as a crime actually gets charged, and even fewer result in convictions...but it is certainly a crime.

This has been taken too far if what Chambers did was a misdemeanor. It was more of an emphatic finger point.

You didn't play any sports, right?

Players recognize that a coach sometimes doesn't have time to politely and calmly ask a player to move or get their attention. I've seen football coaches put their foot on the ass of a D-lineman and shove them as the ball was snapped to demonstrate how they need to fire off the ball; Or grab a player and pull them into the right position in football and basketball practice. Do you get distressed when a coach pulls a player off the sideline and throws them on the field when they are late for a punt or special teams play?

Instead of thinking it was abusive, I always filed it away as an example for how I needed to pay attention and play like the coaches wanted.

What has been taken too far? The law?

I don't tend to think that "I'm his coach, so the law shouldn't apply to me" is an intelligent defense. But, simply moving a kid out of the way isn't a crime, if you aren't doing it rudely, insolently, or angrily.

Regarding an emphatic fingerpointing...if the touching was knowing, and the coach was angry, well...it's a crime. I don't want random pissed off homeless dudes walking up to me and poking, pushing, or grabbing me. The law is there to protect me from that.

I'd tend to expect my coaches to be able to react and handle their job without losing their shit and poking me in the chest. The coaches I had were perfectly capable of doing that.

The intent wasn't to harm the player regardless if he was angry, sad, or frustrated. Players get much worse treatment going for a layup or a rebound. I think they can handle a push from a little guy like Chambers.

Intent to harm isn't an element of the offense. It's not relevant. I've explained the law to you, twice now. If you don't agree, go talk to your legislator about changing it. I don't care what you think they can handle.
