Joe Brunk RIP), Joey's Dad, also played bball and golf, and I think won a National Championship maybe in golf while at Hanover? Seems I remember reading that.I was in junior high when they won. Side note, Courtney Cox (RIP) was also on the girl's golf team that won the state championship as well earlier that school year. Excellent all around athlete and apparently successful business woman as well.
Great FF to see-you are lucky. The guards, Darnell Adell and Reuben Bailey, also played D1 hoops. Tim Stoddard went to NC state and pitched 10 years in the Majors. My first FF at Hinkle, I got to see that team, along with the Super Hicks of Floyd Central, Freshman Kent Benson and New Castle, and Elkhart Memorial. Grat memory.
Thanks for sharing. I watched the last part of regulation and then overtime. You were right, Stack couldn’t be stopped at the end of regulation. What a shot by the Southport player to put it in overtime!I'm partial, but honestly I've never seen a better game (in person) than the 1980 Girls state championship won by Southport over Columbus (East I think) and a buzzsaw named Maria Stack. If you watch the last 4 minutes of regulation I think you'll get a feel for what an incredible game it was. Women playing, but not the typical game as far as shooting percentage.
Think she scored 41 or 43 that game. It remains the best single bball performance I feel I've ever seen in person and I saw Kobe score 63 against the Hornets many years ago. I've watched and froze the crowd shots to see if I could identify a 15yo me in the crowd, but can't do it. Our school really supported the women's team that year and I knew several of those girls and had classes with them; really nice ladies. Everyone brought confetti and bananas (we had a cheer for them that went "Go Bananas, go go bananas!) to throw if we won, and everyone threw them when that shot went in so no one had anything to throw when they actually won it!Thanks for sharing. wouldn't a crowd of people throwing bananas be half ass dangerousThink she scored 41 or 43 that game. this was a women's game in 1980 at MSA. 1) No one intended to throw them until the end of the game, (although I won't guarantee a banana never found it's way to the floor that season in protest of a bad call), and 2) It was a girls game at MSA in 1980. They didn't have detectors or frisk you. Someone could, and probably did, bring a handgun in and no one would've stopped them. Different time and place. Did you watch any of the clip? They have female refs in skirts for heaven's sake!wouldn't a crowd of people throwing bananas be half ass dangerous
No, they beat Marion. IW won it all that year, undefeated. The great thing about that FF was that 3 of the teams (Vincennes, Marion and Indps Washington were undefeated, The fourth team had only one loss, and that was to a team out of Illinois (might have been QBuckner's HS team).Didn’t Big Mac and Downing lose in FF to Marion?
I saw them both in HS and college play bb. Could you imagine BigMac as a Tight End?
Unfortunately I just learned that Ray Pavy passed away this morning.Played at the same time Rayl did. They had the Rayl/Pavy shootout. Both were part of the IU class of 1961. Ray Pavy unfortunately got into a car accident as a freshman than left him paralyzed from the waist down.
He was a great basketball player, but he’s an even better man. I grew up going to church with Ray and his wife Karen in New Castle.
Hell don’t forget Detroit. The east was a damn brawl for years. Even into the 2000s.would love to see Reggie in his prime playing today, those Knicks series were sanctioned fist fights back in the day
