I actually am more of the mind that the Dukes, UK's of the world...probably weren't cheating much more than any number of other schools were. They were, most likely, using their ties to Nike, Coach K's ties to lots and lots of famous people and their influence/money, etc... to their advantage. But I don't think those schools had to actually "break" a bunch of rules to achieve the recruiting successes they did.
What they have, that very, very few schools have...even to this day...is "street cred". Their programs, as much as any other, are little mini NBA franchises. The top players know that. And they all want to be a part of it. I'd say Kentucky and Duke are really the only schools where this is happening, where you can have 3 top 5 kids in the same class commit to the same school. Usually, they would shy away from each other, all wanting their own spotlight. But Duke and Kentucky have established a different dynamic where these top kids all want to flock together because they know they'll get the right blend of proper preparation, national spotlight, etc...
And because I think they've been largely doing the same "cheating type things" for years, as many, many other schools have. I doubt that the NIL effects those schools recruiting success much, up or down.
