The two games on New Years Day were the two highest rated cable broadcasts of all time (see link for full story).
My bet is they go to 8 team playoff by 2016 season. Power 5 conf champs get automatic bids with three at-large bids. First round played at campus locations with higher ranking as home team. First round games played two weeks after conference championship games. That should place them the weekend before finals on most campuses. Semis stay in bowl locations on New Years Day. Finals stay in same place on the calendar as well.
Once that proves to be a success, they'll figure out a way to go to 16 teams with the finals being played the weekend before Super Bowl.
