We will see what difference our new coaches, freshmen/transfers, and a different attitude make for the Hoosiers this season. We will see what this offense looks like with a new OC, RB, WR and an OL with a new focus for offense. We will see what our defense looks like against a team that is decent in the B1G. How will the ST look with increased depth of talent on the team especial at the return positions. Will punt return continue their punt blocks like last season.

The biggest thing for me is to see how the players respond with the new coaching they are getting from older experienced coaches with NFL experience. How the offense does, with an OC that can coach every position and understand what each position goes through, with a very good defensive opponent. If the OL is solid, IU has more talent and speed/wiggle than we have seen for quite a while.

Based on this year's team, not what happened last season, what do you see happening in this game? I see a much better offense and defense giving the Hoosiers a good chance at winning games this year.

I'm glad we're opening against a good P5 team. I have no clue what to expect but, after next Friday, we should have a pretty good idea whether we're going to be competitive in the conference this season.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I'll add, parenthetically, that Illinois will be well-coached although their big guy (and he really is a "big guy") will always be, in my mind, a douchebag. I doubt that the players on either team have any awareness of this but Bielema, as head coach of Wisconsin, demonstrated some pretty shitty sportsmanship when his team pummeled the Hoosiers back in 2010. This piece by the late Terry Hutchens, who provided quality coverage of IU sports for many years, sums it up.

Regardless of the opponent, I always want the Hoosiers to win. And, after Bielema humiliated an opposing coach and a bunch of college kids, I always want him to lose.

Very damned pleased last seasons coordinators are both history. That's all the positive I need to be in 4th gear overdrive for this season. Go HOOSIERS!!

Double DITTO!!

One thing I think we all know; is after the Illinois game we will have a much better idea of the type of team IU has this season. Until then all we have is speculation to go by but after the Illinois game we have a decent B1G team to judge IU's team buy.

Bielema is a D-bag. He has an exceedingly punchable face. That day proved he's a D-bag, and made his face even more punchable than it already was.

But...grow a pair IU players and staff, have some pride, and stop someone!

I don't know how our actual coaches and players responded to that game, but hopefully they just quietly filed it away. You don't talk about things like that, you don't acknowledge them...but you never forget them. And I hope Tom Allen is enough of a historian, that he has that game quietly filed away in his mind.

I seriously doubt we'll be in a position to run the score up next Friday...but man, I'd love to see it happen if we are!

Will be interesting to see the Illinois - Wyoming game tomorrow!

I see where Nebraska is 13.5 favorites vs Northwestern tomorrow. I'd almost like to jump in on a bet for NW on that one.

The Nebraska-NW game is being played in Dublin, Ireland.
That should be interesting. Truly a neutral field. And, the stadium looks pretty cool. Like a giant UFO.

Yeah, if that game was at Dyche stadium, I'd definitely jump on that bet.

Not only a neutral site, but different environment. Plus jet lag. It's going to be interesting.

And I can say that as I’m Irish.

I’ll repeat the old truism: God created whiskey so the Irish wouldn’t rule the world.

Irish women never lose their temper . . . . They always know where it is.

Irish Alzheimer’s: They forget everything except all the grudges.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.

You know the rest….

I worked for a few years with an Irish guy on a project in Europe. For some reason, there are a lot of Irish in Accounting and Finance in German companies.

Great guy. But I seriously had to stop drinking for a while after I came back to the US full time. We were going out EVERY NIGHT. I would have a few drinks and he would still be downing them at closing time. One time, during Fasching (Karnival), another guy and I got back to the hotel in time to get maybe 2 hours sleep. My Irish friend wasn't back yet. When we got to work the next day, there he was.

He wasn't a big guy, either. Funny thing - he was Lee Harvey Oswald's doppelganger - spitting image. I told him he could make a fortune in the US.

I've been to Ireland and the Guiness factory. Love the people and the Guiness.

I’ve been to the Guinness brewery at St. James Gate. The Kid Down the Hall did his second semester junior year at Limerick University. We went over as he was finishing and then drove around the country. (Talk about focusing your attention. Driving on the left side, Steering wheel on the right. Hitting a roundabout and concentrating so hard on getting it right you about pass out.)

Best part was all the pubs in the small towns and villages. The people were incredible. And you do feel something mystical and ethereal, as if those spirits of those from generations past are welcoming you home.

The Guinness is many times better. We don’t get the same here. Outside of Extra Stout I can’t drink regular Guinness draught here. It’s much weaker.

Also went to the Jameson and Bushmills facilities.

Wasn’t all alcohol. We saw some green grass and stuff . . . .

I tell everyone beer in Germany is so much better than here, you can't even imagine. I think it has to do with the freshness of the beer or something - it's just different and much better. There is nothing like sitting in shaded biergarten, drinking bier and eating chicken or brats and hanging out with friends. And, if you don't have friends, you soon make some.

I hear you about driving on the left side. I flew into Heathrow one time and got on a roundabout and went around about 10 times before I figured out how to get off (hilarious scene in National Lampoon's European Vacation with Chevy Chase doing the same thing). . And driving a manual, shifting gears with your left hand..... damn near impossible. Driving in Ireland was relatively simple because there's not as much traffic as in England.

Ireland is a magical place. I need to go back. I kinda wish I'd gone to the Nebraska/Northwestern game now.

Agree with every word. Never been to Germany but it’s on the bucket list. I don’t know if they do IPAs. I hate IPAs. I’ll outlaw them, along with beets, when I’m King. Anyway, give me malty beers - stouts, porters and Oktoberfest beers. Back to being King, Oktoberfest beers will be available all year long.

On the driving side, it does take some time to reach a bit of a comfort level. You think you’ve got it and then you start to make a turn at some street and all of a sudden you find yourself in the wrong lane. Your mind is so conditioned to where you’re supposed to be that you just do it without thinking. So, you then go back on high alert. When you get off their highways you end up on a lot of roads with no center line and the road is wide enough for maybe a car and a half. You think you’d be okay then jamming into the hedge along the side of the road if another car or truck approaches and you then discover the hedge is hiding a stone wall.

Getting directions was interesting. My bride wanted to go to a famous (I guess) cooking school way out in the sticks. We get somewhat close and we see a guy working on a stone wall. His brogue was really thick. We essentially got: “You go down this road a bit. See a big tree. Go further. Turn where there are some sheep. Go down that road. See more sheep. Then past several more trees. Turn somewhere around there.”

”How far is it each time, before we turn?”

”Oh, I don’t know. Never been there.”

No IPA beers that I know of in Germany, thank God. Every beer in Germany, except Altbier around Duesseldorf, was made of only 3 ingredients - Water, Hops, and Barley, according to the Reinheitsgebot - German Purity Law of 1513.

The new regulations in 1993 allowed water, hops, malted barley, yeast, hop extract, and malted grains. The laws also allowed the used of pure sugar for coloring and flavoring of the beer. A fining agent like PVPP was also allowed as an ingredient for the brewing of beers in the country. A 2015 court ruling allowed the use of other ingredients and flavoring as long as the product is not labeled as "beer." (I was stationed there well before 1993, so I had the original recipe, but I've been back many times since and the beer is still excellent.)

And I know what you mean about being conditioned - I always started out every morning driving down the wrong side. And you're right - those narrow roads are something else. I drove around the northwest of England the the high hedge blocked any views outside the hedge. It was an adventure meeting another car or coming to a crossroads - especially after coming home from the pubs. Now I know why they walk everywhere.

Good times. I want to back to Oktoberfest one more time before I get too old. I know it's a total tourist thing, but Munich is great and I'm a tourist, so there you go.

I also want to do a 'Beatles' tour of Liverpool. I've been thinking about trying to rent a house outside London and just using it as a base. You can get to Paris in a few hours by train using the chunnel. And Europe has low-cost airlines. Maybe I'll do 2 months.....

That’s some world history worth knowing.

I’m pretty sure I’ve read that Sam Adams’ Octoberfest beer is their leading seasonal seller. I’ve often wondered why they don’t sell it year round. We have a lot of good brewpubs around here and they almost all brew excellent Octoberfest batches. I’ve asked why they don’t do their Oktoberfest version year round instead of all these goofy-flavored IPAs and sours so those of us who don’t care for the crap can have something other than their weak lagers and wheat beers. The answer, they claim, is that not all of the ingredients for an Octoberfest are available year round. Don’t know if I’m getting shined or if that’s true. At least they usually have a stout as long as they haven’t poisoned it with too much coffee flavoring.

Sounds like a BS excuse. My guess is, they make it special - like the McRib. It gooses sales. They probably sell more in 6 months of selling Oktoberfest beer than they would if they sold it year round.

It's like a 'Summer Shandy'. It's actually great marketing.

Which is the better advantage?
Illinois is playing today so we will be there second game.
We will be able to scout their first game?

Advantage Illinois, but they need to avoid any major injuries today. Also, they'll have a shorter week (only six days until our game) for rest, practice and game prep.

A competitive game today, if it happens, would definitely help with scouting.
