I’m thankful for Romeo coming to IU and all but I think in some cases top recruits hurt programs. Look at Kentucky and duke for example. Every year each program are top 10 in recruiting however neither have performed up to the rankings. I’d almost prefer Anthony Harris or Lester quinones over watford. I don’t know seems like to build winning teams u need smart, 4 year players. Look at this years final four for example...

I would still like the consistency of their success. They are contenders every year.

I think it totally depends on the player. I might get bashed for this but I think Romeo underperformed. He seemed to disappear at times, then turn it on with 5 minutes left in the game. And there were way to too maNY times he would just stand in the corner.
Just my observation.

The more I look back on the season the more I realize I under appreciated Romeo. I think people forget he was a freshman, sure his shooting wasn’t the greatest (torn ligament) but his defense was great and got even better as the year went on. He averaged the third most points out of all freshman right behind Zion and RJ. All this on a team that IMO lacked leadership and had coaching flaws.

Contending every year is nice. Watching young men get better as the year goes on, is fun. The flip side..frustrating. to high of expectations for young men. Not getting to watch them the following year grow and help you win. Its all about developing. Better have good coaches to help these guys develop mentally and their game. Or its a disaster. Ive seen both. Had a player obvously use UK for the training and exposure. Got him drafted. But only played eleven games for UK. That sucks. Watched two four star recruits come in and develop into top twenty picks. One dropped twentyfive in a playoff game last night. Thats pretty sweat. Its a fine line. You may have the best exciting talent. But in my opinion. Its harder to win it all. But if done right. You will be in the hunt every year. Not sure having one OND makes that big of a difference. Three or more is when I think you can win with talent over experience.

You are retarded

Depends on the player. If it's a Zion(elite talent) that plays HARD every game - bring them on. Romeo seemed completely disinterested half the time. If Romeo had the fire and passion Zion did, I'd welcome that guy every time.

I have never like it but I can't blame the schools either. I think the rule has taken away the ability to have players stick around. Too many think they are when their not ready to make the jump.

Not to contridict you but his D was terrible at the start. As the year went on, his D got better.

How many players have averaged 15-17 points per game for us recently? How many did it with a hurt hand as a freshman? Romeo's performance was fine. I had hoped for more first half production, but he did other things to help out. Through injury or other reasons, we didn't have that 3rd or 4th option we needed consistently

I think the thing that was missing, far more than a 3rd or 4th scoring option, was leadership. On and off the court. This team, even with injuries, was talented enough to get to the tournament. And often times that leadership would have led to more shots for Morgan and Langford, at the expense of scoring for our 3rd or 4th options.

There is no question that Indiana’s one and dones have been great basketball players. Three freshman going to the pros after one year of college. But the reality is neither Vonleh nor Gordon nor Langford won a single game in he NCAA tournament. I would not be surprised if the next one and done player at Indiana ends up being another one step forward and two steps backwards for the program, again.

Edit: I’m not saying that a five star player isn’t going to be a temporary boost to the program. I just rather have a couple of three star prospects like Juwan Morgan

I find it hard to believe anyone actually believes this misguided notion about one and dones.

Last 10 years:
UK: 7 Elite 8s, 4 Final Fours, 1 Title
Duke 5 Elite 8s, 2 Final Fours, 2 Titles
IU 0 Elite 8s, 0 Final Fours, hahahaha

Yet some people sit on their high horse and seem to know more than guys like Coach K, Calipari, Self, Williams, etc. I mean come on, get a clue people.

Look at the clown coaches Vonleh and Langford played for.

I'd take five every year..And not care if they went to class.
In the world we live in now..It's just win ..Or become a has been..
Your saying you don't like the success Duke..Carolina..UK has ?
Every year they know they have a legit shot at a F.F.
Right now we're hoping for tournament bid..
And I'm old...A fan since the day's of Scott May..

I am reminded of the story about John Wooden and the -then-named Lew Alcindor. Wooden did not want to recruit Alcindor, concerned that having such a player in the program would create lots of pressure to win national championships for the next four years. UCLA's AD had to order Wooden to go to NYC to recruit Alcindor and then he sent an associate AD along to make sure Wooden put forth to Alcindor a sincere, positive story about UCLA instead of sabotaging the recruitment.

Duke didn't start going on the strict one and done diet until Parker.

The title they one over Butler was an old team.

The title they won with Okefore and company was led by Quinn Cook, a senior.

Duke is currently in their largest conference drought since K started (they haven't won the ACC since that first title team that was dominated by seniors).

Kentucky has a billion lottery picks and one title in the last 20 years.

No one is doubting the talent of one and dones. The game is set up that a smart coach with a team of mature players is greater than a team made up of 18 year olds.

It's the classic case of Eric Gordon vs Etwaun Moore.

We made fun of Purdue for getting sloppy seconds behind Gordon, and Gordon was the most impactful freshman behind Zeller at IU since the turn of the century...but he was gone after one year (his worst and youngest) while Purdue kept Moore for four while winning a big ten title (never finishing worse than second) and two sweet sixteens which were considered disappointments after the season's they had.

Both players are still playing in the NBA.

If Romeo would be forced to stay, he would have a legit shot at the all time scoring record.

But he's gone and his legacy is one of over hype, horrible shooting, chemistry issues and the third one and done to have a disappointing season.

Romeo led IU in scoring as a freshman with a torn thumb ligament in his shooting hand it is a wonder he could shoot or play at all.

He said he re-hurt it in the Northwestern game...and then he shot better statistically afterwards (he was around 22% from 3 and 66% from the line going into Duke).

It's a nice story and I'm sure there is some truth to it...but I think you are way over exaggerating it's impact as you make it sound as if he couldn't even lift up a fork to eat.

Oh and leading the team in scoring doesn't mean as much when you play the most minutes and take the most shots.

And you truly believe that you have a better strategy the Coach K, Calipari, Self, Williams, etc. That’s mind blowing.

Self and Williams aren't one and done coaches.

Self is trying to exploit the transfer market lately.

You should know this. The only pure one and done coaches now are K and Calipari.

And K has been worse since he's gone to it along with his legacy tainted as a cheater from all of the shoe guys he brings in.

They sure are worth it I guess. They do get a lot of publicity like the Fab five did.

2 teams out of 347 have won 3 of the last 10 titles. What do they know? They obviously have a terrible strategy to get the most talented players. Who in the world wants that?

And Self has one and dones nearly every year. Roy gets all he can.

Very good points. However it’s definite to say with the level of talent coach K and Cal have received in the last decade they have underperformed. Experience has proven to be better than raw talent and potential.

Everyone tries to handicap it by saying well they have had the most talent. THAT’S THEIR JOB. One could argue their most important job. And it’s the entire argument. Would you rather have the most talent or not is essentially the argument.

Again Duke's title over Butler was an older team like Villanova, UNC and Virginia have been lately. You know the teams that are actually winning these days.

The ROI on one and dones has been shite, and yet we all get giddy while star gazing over them.

That's the beauty of the one and done. You don't get them when they have physically matured at 22....you get them at 18.
