Oh man Tyson vs Jake Paul in July

That's on a power play, bruh.

My kid's last team played grunt hockey. Not too many skilled stick and puck handlers, so they dumped it most of the time, chased, and battled in the corners. Lots of physicality, lots of goals scored on happenstance pucks getting in front of the net and someone deflecting it in. My kid is small and slow but he battles and plays smart.

His new team is way more finesse. Few of them battle, fewer hit. If they aren't trying to score on a breakaway or breakout, it's almost like they don't care and won't rush to get into the offensive zone and just grind. I didn't realize how much there is to appreciate with the other version of hockey.

Sunday, though, some kid finally sent it in along the boards from the opposite side of my kid and he was ready. Skated down, got the puck coming around the corner and made the defenseman commit. As soon as he started skating at him, he made a quick pass to the goal and miracle of all miracles, a kid was skating to the goal, received the pass, and chipped it by the goalie. Beautiful stuff. Just hope the coach starts getting on these kids about how to play.

I've joked about this, but I do know a little bit about hockey.

My little cousin is a goalie in college. My best friend won state when we were in high school twice. My daughters boyfriend plays. I'm around the game some.

There are so many different ways to play the game. Dump and chase, give and go, press, ect. Defense, man if your not on a penalty, a box if you are or triangle if you have two in the box. The game is so much more complex then what people think that are casual viewers.

Pretty exciting stuff when you start to understand it.

It’s big here. The cost of gear is insane.

Your not kidding.

My other cousin (I've got a few) has two kids in travel hockey. He drives for UPS full time but has to work a second job because for each kid, it's like 4k each per season, not including any new gear they may need.

All the youth sports are insane. Full in with travel etc for the upper club soccer teams you’re at almost $15k a year

I’ll add that I’m not sure what the parents think they’ll get out of it. They aren’t all going D1 much less pro. The travel is a scam. In a big city there’s more than enough teams in a region.

Exposure.

My little cousin is on a hockey scholarship (it's not full, partial), partly because of what he did with travel.

@BradStevens @Noodle @CO. Hoosier so in another thread i showed that the average nhl team scores 3.1 goals per game. i also showed that you can basically pen a goal a game in with my plan catching the other team on line changes alone. so now i only need to come up with 2 goals a game. basically nothing with my great players on the ice 20x longer than the opposition. are there players who can do it LFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'd be the coach against the team that only wanted to shoot the 3 ball.

Unrelated, but I recall some time back there was a HS football coach who made a name for himself by never punting, never kicking FGs, and never kicking PATs. His record was astounding.

Don’t buy it. Chavez is awful. Lost to Anderson Silva 5 years ago
So joke? Chavez is only 39. Maybe he can get into shape enough to beat Paul. Paul-Tyson showed that Paul isn’t a really good boxer. Chavez was a good one. At 39 maybe he can be semi-good and that could be enough for him to win.

Apparently OU has one of the better club hockey teams around. It's kind of a big deal and the get surprisingly good crowds at their games.

I haven't checked recently, but when my son was in high school they had a traveling club hockey team that was expensive and traveled all over the place. And practices were at the OU rink at like 5am 2-3 times a week. My son was friends with two of the guys on that travel team and both are on the OU team now (I think). I have to think that's their ceiling though.

To your point, I don't know what the parents/kids who were a part of the team got out of it. I'd have to check, but I don't think anyone else played collegiately (other than the two guys on the club team).

That said, it's pretty big in Columbus. I think the NHL must do a good job of pumping up the area where their teams are. The Blue Jackets perineally suck, but there is some good high school level hockey in Columbus.

My son's team played a team in a Detroit tournament from Miami of Ohio who practiced at their college rink, club was the Redhawks, etc. Really good. Heard it was one of Ohio's top programs.

They built some nice facilities in Columbus not long after the Blue Jackets arrived. Right now they have at least 2x the ice that Cincinnati has. The local minor league team here in Cincy took over one local facility and they’re finally putting some money into it. They’re in the process of adding a third sheet. Cool thing is they’re building it to have ice in the bench areas for sled hockey.

And the facility in Oxford (Miami) is incredible.
