No. 22 Hoosiers Fall to Rutgers, 4-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers fell to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 4-1, at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Indiana falls to 3-3-1 on the season overall and to 0-2-0 in Big Ten conference play. Rutgers improves to 3-2-1 on the year and to 1-1-0 in league play.

For the Hoosiers, Femi Hollinger-Janzen scored the team's goal off assists from Tanner Thompson and Kyle Sparks. Hollinger-Janzen and Sparks led the Hoosiers with three shots each, with both getting one shot on goal.

After nearly 15 minutes of play, the Hoosiers had the match's first good look at goal. Off a corner kick from Thompson, Grant Lillard's header from five yards out missed just wide of the post, keeping the match scoreless.

In the 19th minute, Rutgers opened the scoring with a goal from Sheldon McCoy. Five minutes later, the Scarlet Knights doubled their lead on a breakaway goal from Jason Wright.

Just two minutes later, Indiana had a chance to cut the lead in half on a great buildup. On the attack, Thompson found Cory Thomas in space, who cracked a shot that forced a diving save from the Rutgers goalkeeper. Indiana's Phil Fives looked to be in position for the rebound, but the ball went just out of reach.

After Miles Hackett notched Rutgers' third goal of the game in the 40th minute, the Scarlet Knights took a 3-0 advantage in to halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Hoosiers looked to cut in to the Rutgers advantage. In the 69th minute, Sparks made a great move to find space on the left side of the box, but his curling, right-footed shot missed just high of the crossbar.

Seven minutes later, Indiana cut in to the Rutgers' lead on a great team goal. With possession in the middle of the pitch, Sparks found Thompson on the left side, who sent a beautiful cross to the back post, finding Hollinger-Janzen. The senior rose above the defense to beat the Rutgers keeper with a header to the far post. Hollinger-Janzen's team-leading third goal of the season trimmed the Scarlet Knights' lead to 3-1.

The comeback ended there, however, as Rutgers tacked on a score in the 87th minute off the foot of Erik Sa to give the Scarlet Knights their winning margin of 4-1.

For the match, the Hoosiers had a 17-11 shot advantage over Rutgers and also had more corner kicks than the Scarlet Knights, 7-4.

Indiana returns to action on Wednesday at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium when the team plays host to Evansville at 7:30 p.m.

It is time to seriously question this coaching staff. Maybe I am still spoiled from Jerry's great run in his last 7 or 8 years, but this is simply unacceptable for an elite program like IU. Aside from that great run in 2012, this has been the most disappointing few years in IU soccer. Those that have seen the team play or know more about soccer than me, what are your thoughts?
