NIT Success Lead to Program Success?

I don't disagree with all of that, but it's also why I say the results are more or less meaningless other than hanging a banner or not, and just having fun with the thing.
t is special to end the season with a win in a tournament against other teams regardless of what tournament you are in.

Someone compared winning the the NIT to finishing 69th. I disagree with that. I believe the NIT champ can legitimately make a claim they are tournament tested and could have competed in the NCAA tournament. I would compare it to being in the top 30 - 35.

I can't get us better than #45, whatever we do in the NIT.

First of all, put us behind the 8 BT teams, the 7 ACC teams, the 7 SEC teams, and the 6 Big 12 teams. So that's 28. Next add VCU, UCF, Liberty, Gonzaga, Murray St., Buffalo, Oregon, Nevada, UC Irvine, St. Mary's, Wofford, Houston, Cincy, Washington, NM State and Villanova. So that's 16 more.

Then there are several teams right at our level----Belmont, Yale, Bradley, Marquette, ASU, Utah St., Seton Hall from the NCAAs & TCU, Creighton, Clemson from the NIT.

So, I get the impulse....people trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear......but we'd all be laughing at Purdue fans if they were saying this stuff.

It's just about continuity, establishing habits and approach. None of the players are for a second gonna wish that they'd been in the NIT instead of the NCAA, but here we are and so you pick up the pieces and make the best of it. A mindset that had this team had it during the mid-year swoon, we'd have been in the tourney. So you develop them and play hard the next game.

One of the things I've heard several UM players cite for bringing this year's team together was their overseas trip from the summer. No reason a good NIT run can't help develop better habits and have some positive carryover to next season.

While its true that the outcomes of the NIT games are "meaningless" I think that winning can and will be an important vehicle to develop focus and confidence among the returning players, something that was lacking during the losing streak

Going back 15 years, no NIT winner or runner-up has made it to the FF the following year--that includes programs like Michigan x2, Minnesota x2, GT,OSU, N. Carolina, South Carolina x2, Baylor x2, W. Virginia, Clemson.

I don't think making it to the NCAA field is a particularly big deal for any of those programs.
Good thing Archie didnt win or get to runner up then...

There was so much excitement in our program!!!! $20 seats were filling lower leve!!!!!

Did uk, KU or UNC ever rebuild through NIT? 'nuff said. Completely nonsense!
Those 3 bluebloods recruit 5* and 4* every season they make the NCAA Tournament on talent alone. Big 12 and SEC is weaker overall than the B1G.

Got to agree. When the once proud IU basketball program starts talking about the NIT being a springboard for next season, my reaction truthfully is....How the mighty have fallen. I really wouldn't expect Purdue to be in that situation now for a long time. So hearing this from IU fans, while hopeful as they should be, tells just where the program and fan mentality is now. Maybe Archie can resurrect the program but as a fan (if I was) I would demand better and expect better and soon. You're better than that.

That team had Wittman, Kitchell, and Turner as true freshman, and Tolbert as a soph. Along with Woodson as a junior and I. Thomas coming in as a freshman. They were going to be pretty damn good in 1980 & 1981 regardless of what happened in the 1979 NIT.

I don't know if you recall this, but that team was rated #1 preseason in 1980, and for good reason. Woodson & Kitchell both got hurt in 1980 which killed the mojo.[/QUOT
Wait. Injuries don't matter. Right ? Or did that change since 1979-80 ? If this year's team was supposed to make the NCAAT in spite of all the injuries, shouldn't that team have done the same ? Especially with much greater talent top to bottom and a Hall of Fame coach.

The double standard on this board is mind-boggling
Not only did that team make the tournament, it won the BIG. All of this without Wittman for all of the conference season and Woodson for 2/3 of it. It can be done.

If I lived closer I would have went to every IU NIT game. I do think the NIT wins were an important springboard into this season. If IU had never played in the postseason at all it would have been worse

Not under Crean. This was still Crean's recruits losing.

I complimented the program in the sense that the fan base deserves better. What is wrong with that? Again you attack me with little reason. Now that's sloppy.

You are certainly not hearing this from many IU fans.
