Kinda boring in between Kansas and B10 season after the New Year. So lets look at who we'll likely have next season, and maybe what holes need filled via the portal and/or late freshman signees.

Ballhandlers

Leaving - Xavier, JHS
Returning - Galloway, Bates, Leal
Newcomers - Cupps

Wings

Leaving - Kopp, I'm gonna say Geronimo as well
Returning - Gunn, Banks
Newcomers - Newton

Bigs

Leaving - TJD, Race
Returning - Reneau, Duncomb

Obviously no way to know if the above is true, but I think its a pretty solid guess. So assuming it is, what then will we need? We'd have 4 more scholarship spots.

Starters if no one else were to be added:

Cupps
Bates
Galloway
Gunn/Banks
Reneau

Bench help in Duncomb and Banks/Gunn, and also Newton if he's ready as a frosh.

Obvious needs: Length! A proven, long, versatile 3 and D 4 man would be nice. Also a high level defending big. If we could add a player or two that could push for a starting spot/main rotation spot alongside Malik...it would allow Banks and Gunn to not have to guard as many "bigs". Ideally then our "wings" rotation would be Galloway, Gunn, Banks, and Newton. Which I think is solid. Cupps and Bates will provide a good ballhandling backcourt. They'll need another guy for depth purposes (either to start over Cupps, or to back him up). Galloway will obviously handle the ball a lot too.

The one other thing that jumps out at me as much as anything...defense. Woody is going to need to address that side of the ball in the portal, I think.

No point in even looking at it right now. If all the people you mentioned actually leave, then we will have quite a few transfers in.

Gunn isn't starting at the four. Banks maybe.

With all the turmoil caused by NIL, NBA possibilities, free transfers, and injuries, the chances that anyone could accurately predict next year's starting lineup at any school are vanishingly small.

Yup.

X, Miller, Race will have all exhausted their eligibility, I believe.

TJD is gonna go pro, I'm sure. And I don't think its a stretch, at all, that JHS is going pro as well.

Jordan is speculation, for sure.

We're obviously going to have to bring in transfers or late signees, and we have a pretty good idea of who'll leave.

I would say JHS is 50/50 at best to go pro. I’d put TJD at 70/30.

Could be. But I'd put the odds on both higher than that.

TJD mainly just because he isnt going to improve anything at IU another year. Maybe his NIL money would be a safer bet, and would exceed what his likely NBA contract would be? But the difference won't be huge, and I just can't envision him playing 5 full years of college ball.

JHS, I think the likelihood of him leaving early went up when X broke his foot. He's going to be featured a lot more. They're going to see more of his versatility, what he can do as a PG at his size, etc... Doesn't mean he won't also struggle, at times. Or that our team won't be average with him running point. But for what NBA GMs usually look for, he's got a great shot over the next couple months to convince a few of them he's worth their 1st pick.

TJD won’t be in the NBA. The $1+ million he is making this year is more than he could be making next year.

JHS hasn’t played well enough to warrant a 1st round pick yet, imo. I know the NBA drafts on potential, but he needs to be better to get a first round grade.

I think your take on TJD very well could be true. But again, I just cant fathom him playing 5 full years of college ball. And I'm sure his dream is still to play in the NBA. The best way for him to achieve that, at this point, is to go try to prove himself in the G League/Summer Leagues, etc... I still think if he's healthy though, that Nebraska game offers a glimpse at what his NBA role could be. Poor man's Ben Simmons. And that'll be intriguing enough, with his length and athleticism, to get him an NBA contract somewhere.

JHS...I think his size and versatility will end up being 1st round worthy...and I could be imagining this, but my perception is his "camp" has 1 and done firmly on their minds. Often times that, combined with a few GMs showing some love, is enough to pull kids out. Lots of G Leaguers that never sniff the NBA that went that route.

The whole problem starts with players having ''a camp''

I do not think JHS IS leaving. I agree with your other analysis

I have not seen the improvement in TJD to expect him to go up the draft board.
I think he goes where the money is- Europe, G league, NIL. I would follow the money as well.
And what if his NIL offer is higher at another school?

That’s a good comparison. TJD has some skill that makes him worthy. I think JHS goes even as a high second round pick.

My guess would be

Starters
JHS
Bates
Galloway
Geronimo
Reneau

Bench
Cupps
Newton
Gunn
Banks
Duncomb

Deep Bench
Leal
Maybe a stud Freshman if we get one Asa ,Queen or the kid from Texas.

The last thing the Rockets need is another guard with shooting issues. That means if JHS's shooting woes continue the Rockets will be all over him. Fertitta is a double lousy owner. The Rockets new uniforms look like surplus clown outfits from Barnum and Bailey.

His corporation bought one of my favorite steak restaurants and immediately reduced the quality ( hell yes I’m mad)-same strategy with the Rockets. Worst sports owners are expert billionaires who are clueless.

Eric Gordon is showing his age and injury history so only a spot player even though a couple seasons ago he went off for 50 against Utah. He is making nearly $250,000 per game this year so about $25,000 per point scored.

Bird and Gordon are the two players from Indiana to win the NBA 3 point competition thus far.

Houston's teams have two absolute bottom of the barrel owners and one exceptional who is the most knowledgable owner in baseball.

IMO if you have GMs saying we will take you in the second round he’s gone. I would be too if I were him. He will make it in the NBA no matter where he gets drafted. Sooner the better for him. He is by no means a student athlete. He is here to further his career in bball, and that is ok in my book.

Kinda my feelings. And since I really, really want IU to take it up a notch, I'm hoping he flourishes now that he'll officially "get the ball", with X out for a while. If he does, his draft stock will skyrocket. And I just don't get the sense that it'll take too many GMs assuring him he's their 1st or 2nd pick, to get him to leave.

He is going to play 30 mins a game if he plays. I am worried he load manages or sits out some big games, but he might not. That is pure speculation on my part. He is just in every way already a pro. Even this giving away the Bose speakers, that's a pro move.

A NBA scout for OKC was sitting next to my group at Vegas, my one buddy was drunk and loves to muck it up while so. He told my buddy JHS was gone after this year doesnt even need to play anymore, and TJD has a lot of work to do on his midrange game. lol ya think?

I strongly think TJD, Woody, TJD's people...should consider a complete shift of role and style the remainder of this year. Whatever precipitated how he played against Nebraska, that needs to happen regularly going forward. It wasn't just that Nebraska openly ran 2 guys at him, and TJD was better at passing out of those doubles than he usually is. He brought the ball up the floor a few times. He played a Draymond Green/Simmons type role at the top of the key directing and passing. He posted up less frequently, and for less time.

Obviously he won't have triple doubles every game, and it was one of the worst teams in our conference...but there was a glimpse at what I'm convinced his best professional role would be. And I'm also convinced it would take our current team to a whole new level. With X out now for a while, it would also relieve some pressure from JHS.

I likt the idea of TJD with the ball in his hand going downhill. Sounds a hell of a lot better than him catching it in the post and trying to fight though three guys to dunk.

Imho, TJD waited too long. Now, it’s too late, and I expect him to be back next year.

JHS won’t make the same mistake.

He passes better than most expected. If he just had a midrange jumper dammit!
