Next year

We play the schedule we have. Nebraska was in the top 25 of the coaches poll if we want to get technical about it.
If IU could’ve gotten the Oregon or Penn St game at home next season and won, then that would go a long way to shutting up the doubters. If we lose those two games next season, then the naysayers will still be saying we haven’t beaten anyone. We have Wisconsin at home, but I don’t think Fickell will have them ranked, so likely another season where we don’t beat a ranked team. We’ll have to hope we can win on the road at Oregon or PSU to get the respect.

This year was this year and next year is something new. Can't necessarily make a direct correlation from a rankings standpoint. Given that we did not prove we could play on the same level as top 5 teams, I don't expect any love or benefit of the doubt from the preseason rankings. I am guessing 20-25 is the best we will see. It will be a "prove it" ranking. Win and work our way back up, or stumble and never be seen in the rankings again.

Herbstreet does make sense. For the basketball tournament this year, forget whoever wins the tournament. Let’s give the championship to whoever we think had the best team!
We had a good portal last off season. I'd say using Herbstreit methodology, for the bb tournament, our Hoosiers should be at least a five seed. Being conservative.

Looking forward to March!

Looking at the BiG standings … and this years’s portal additions
IU’s preseason floor conference ranking would appear to be around 8th.
Ceiling would appear to be 4th.
(5th if Michigan jumps IU due to brand value.)
(6th if USC jumps IU due to brand value.)
IA’s portal ranking is poor.
To me, Huskers and Badgers need to prove it on the field.
Hard to say what to expect from Trojans and Huskies.
I don’t think Illinios will be expected to improve.
If Illinois gets a preseason top 25 ranking IU’s will be higher.
Indiana will get no votes for last place.

Major disappointment might be a stretch. Would I be disappointed? Yes. Do things happen every year where teams drop a game they should not? Absolutely. It’s hard for me to consider 8 wins a major disappointment, but perhaps I am overly hung up on the adjective.

For years, all I wanted was a perennial bowl team that competed. I try to keep myself grounded in that even as I let my hopes soar.

You guys are thinking with your IU brain.
SO many haters out there and all the talk will be how IU should not have been in the CFP this year, no good wins, Rourke gone, etc., etc.

I don't believe IU will be ranked at the start of the season.
Which is fine with me so that chip is back on the shoulder!!

We have three all Americans coming back on defense.

That alone will get us ranked.

When you look at this, there really aren’t many spots to fill.

Safety is the real need spot. Probably need at least 2, maybe 3. (Could depend on if a CB gets moved to safety like Toomer was)

WR, another slot guy. Maybe a second, but that could depend on if Cody returns.

OL, they really have numbers here, but a lot of young guys and 3 coming off injuries. Maybe 1? Probably an interior guy. Barrett and Jones have been with the program awhile. One should take over RT. Barrett has gotten some praise previously.

Don’t really see any other spots needing guys. I do expect to see more guys enter the portal in the spring and that could change things.

We need another edge with Carr and JMF graduating.

I don’t know, a lot of guys there already. Again, if guys leave, that changes.

I get several of those guys are young, but at some point they have to play, or just stop recruiting high school because they won’t come to just sit.

Collins was getting snaps, but is coming off an injury. Ndukwe is intriguing. Needs some size, but played as a freshman, so there is something there. Cig even said, talent finds the field. They recruited 3 DEs, and a couple are highly thought of, at least one could play.

With the number of guys they have, and only having 85 scholarships, I just don’t see this as a spot to add.

They're going to over recruit the portal because guys will leave that are currently on the roster.

I get that, and expect some guys to leave, but just looking at numbers:

DE-Kamara(and he’s eating up most of the snaps), behind him are Sneed (who I think leaves unless he really blows up in the spring and solidly takes over as #2) and then 2xDepaepe. Burris plays snaps here also (and I think the Depaepes end up like Burris as combo DE/Inside pass rushers)

Bull-Collins was #2 starting the season and saw the field before getting hurt. Ndukwe played as a true frosh (granted primarily special teams) 3 frosh all fairly highly rated. That’s 5 guys and I don’t see any of them leaving.

With an 85 limit, I just don’t see it. I get there isn’t a lot of production at the Bull returning, but at some point you have to play the young guys. You can’t just always bring in an experienced guy because the young guys never get experience then.

Also, this is obviously conjecture, but I really think Ndukwe is a dark horse here. Cig made a comment about not recruiting 4*\5* transfers who didn’t play at “big” schools because of depth. Said talent finds a way to get in the field. Ndukwe shows up as a lightly recruited 220 pound DE. Clearly too light to line up at DE right away, but plays as a true frosh on special teams and made multiple plays. Add 10+ pounds and he could make a major jump next year.

Merry Christmas everyone. Just for fun what’s your prediction on where we will sit in the pre season polls taking into account our transfer portal additions and subtraction?
I’ll say in the 12-14 range.

Well, based on ESPN and all the wanna be analysts on YouTube, Ranking and playoff inclusion shouldn't be based on some silly win/loss record but only on the quality of NFL bodies a program has. Sure Bama lost to 6-6 Oklahoma, never scoring a touchdown and ND lost to NIU but that was because of their kicker and OSU lost to Michigan but it was only a rivalry game. But still, they are good teams and only good teams should get in -- good being defined as player ratings not actually winning the games you should.

Maybe with some flex due to injury, 2025 ranking should be the top 6 then any 6 from the remaining 10 of first 16 programs listed below.
I like this system. Now I don't have to waste my Tuesdays checking on who's moved in and who's moved out of the projected playoff pool.

Right? Right? This is what Firebaum and Hersteit are saying, correct?

(yes, sarcasm)
