My own petty protest

Wow, so you really think cancelling the spring game will somehow affect attendance in a meaningful way next fall ? I think we will have the same loyal 35,000 and if we happen to get off to a good start and play a good opponent, maybe 45,000 on occasion. Do you think any of the students give a crap about the cancellation ?
Look, we can agree to disagree on the handling last weekend, but if the spring game is somehow more important to our fans than supporting the team against a “live” opponent, then that is pretty sad.

I was referring to the Spring game next year. I thought that was obvious when I said 10000. When something is important to you, you make it work. This could have easily been made to work. As far as the other schools, they have a bit more equity in their programs than does IU. Coming off a 5-7 season and no bowl and then you disappoint those who are still hanging around when you didn't have to? Anyway, I'm through talking about it. I'll just know better than to get excited about it next year.

You apparently didn’t read the post I was responding to, as it said FG needed to make the game work REGARDLESS of weather (ie the forecasts are irrelevant) and football at IU needed to matter (with which I wholeheartedly agree). I responded with UM because they too could have made other plans , especially if they were so confident in the forecast 3 days ahead. But , lo and behold, they didn’t, neither did Northwestern or Wisconsin.
BTW, are you confident this was FG’s call and not the football program’s ?

From my perspective, it wasn't who made the call it was when and how they made it (which I sure thought I had already covered in about 3 different threads).

You've always been a good guy on here so I'll explain it again (just from my perspective:

I had planned to take my grandson (he and a friend were looking forward to doing the "Skills Stations"). Initially, I couldn't find any solid "Official" information on the Official Football page of the official Indiana Athletics site (IUhoosiers.com)!aside from the date, and later, the time of the game. Late on the evening of April 8th the information blackout ended and it was clear that the kids events were going to be run as in years past.

On April 11th on the "official" Football page they put up a blurb that said something to the effect that in case of bad weather the game would be moved indoors to Mellencamp (not a quote). They have since taken that bit of information down from the Football page. There was nothing saying the activities would be cancelled or that the game would be closed to the public..., fast forward to noon on the thirteenth and the game is cancelled to the public and to be played in Mellencamp...

As you are now certainly aware the weather was fine and there's was zero effort to get the kids activities in prior to kickoff (which could have easily been done).

The whole thing gave off the aura of "we never really wanted to host this thing anyway and boy aren't we lucky it's forecast to rain...

As has been covered, there were multiple work arounds that with even a modicum of contingency planning could have made the day a pleasant one for all interested parties.

You know the ending...

From my perspective: someone disappoints me I get over it, someone disappoints my grandson, I'm Ticked...

My entire point is that we DIDN'T cancel the game. We just moved it indoors. Why not just plan to play outside and wait to see if the weather cooperated. If not, send the team over to Mellencamp, send the fans to SSAH to watch the feed. You still have your event and no one gets shut out. IIRC, KW moved the spring game indoors a few years ago in the middle of the damn game. My complaint is a simple one. With a little advanced planning the spring game could have been a fan-attended event. And it does need to be promoted heavily over multiple media beginning weeks in advance. For multiple reasons it needs to be treated by the Athletic Department like a big deal.

And as I freely acknowledged in the thread title, I know it's petty. Trying to watch that horrible feed on my laptop at home (until frustration led me to just turn it off) really chapped my ass.

I’m tired and this is my last comment on this, it has already been blown out of proportion. UM and NU also did not cancel their games, they “uninvited” fans 3 days in advance and held them indoors, just like IU.

My only point to you would be that it is no trivial task setting up cameras for televising a football game. I think that was one of the driving reasons for making the decision on Friday, so BTN could get set up.

Now they only had one camera and the operator was drunk on his a$$, but that's a different matter. I was also very disappointed they moved the game but I don't see how they could just move the game the last minute for weather and stream it in to Assembly hall without setting up cameras in both facilities ahead of time and I don't think that is going to happen.

actually, pretty sure it is a relatively trivial task to set up the cameras, and IU has plenty of Media School students who could do it no problem..

the IU social media army acts like this was some kind of logistical nightmare that no one could have navigated.

it wasn't. MS and Mellencamp aren't 500 miles apart.

most 16 yr olds could have figured it out.

it's raining hard, or with lighting, at noon, walk the players, staff, recruits, families, over to Mellencamp.

it's looking playable by noon, play it in MS.

let everyone know ahead of time, "WEATHER PERMITTING".

everyone knows what that means, and can decide for themselves weather to head for Btown sat morning.

this was never going out live on BTN in the first place, so there was no real time rush ever to make the call.

had it been bad at noon, but radar looked good for 12:30 or 1, they could have easily delayed the start 30 mins or an hour, no problem.

this was never rocket science.
