Must outperform expectations

That really says it all. And it is what IU hoops used to always be about.

There is a hunger in Green's speech, but he has to realize he cannot take wild shots and just take a team on by himself. If he can do that, he is capable of Bracey-esque performances occassionally, if not consistently.

The good news with this squad is that only 2 are freshmen and basically all 11 are capable players. Playing well is a team effort, but a lot can happen on the defensive end of the floor to begin with.

Green needs to score and not turn the ball over. If Smith can not shoot and turns the ball over there are now 4 capable post players that will take some of his minutes. Also if Hunter is healthy and Damezi can play D and regain his confidence, both are much better shooters and offensive players than Smith.

... and again, I ask, based on what? You're talking about both players from high school. Both are 2 years removed from that now and 1 has had a major injury which it remains to be seen at what level he can return from. The reality is that neither have shown they are better than Smith at the college level. I do have hope that Hunter can return and help this team, but at what level no one knows, and the likelihood of both impacting this years team is not likely. I'm not down on this years team and in fact I think if healthy, they can surprise in conference and make the NCAA but I'm not expecting significant contributions from Hunter or Anderson at this point. I hope you're right, but it's past time to temper expectations for those two. Improvement in this team is likely coming from improvements and return to health of Davis, Phinisee, Green and yes Smith with contributions from TJD and Brunk.

Hunter hasn't even been on the floor.
How can you temper expectations?...When you have no base line of his abilities..
As far as a shooter .Ball handling.&Creativity. Hunter right now has that on Smith..
Jumping ablitlty..I'll give that to Smith 100%.

well, you start off saying you can't have expectations, which I agree with, because there is no baseline, but then you have the expectation that he's better than Smith at ball handling, shooting and creativity. I'm saying let me see him get on the floor in games first, and if the injury has eroded any of those abilities that a few posters seem to believe he still has at levels they have imputed from his high school play. I'm recovering from some pretty major ankle surgery in May, and my leg strength is a fraction of what it was. I want to see him get in games before I even begin to think if and how he can help us.

If Hunter is healthy enough to play in games, he will be a good offensive player, I am more concerned with his stamina, durability, and defense. Hunter's offensive skillset on the wing is the best on the team when he is healthy. Smith needs to carve out a defensive stopper niche, and play to his strengths, rebounding, shot blocking, put backs, run the floor for dunks. Damezi Anderson needs to play smart solid defense, and be confident in his shooting to score. And use his size and strength to take smaller players to the rim or use his mid range pull-up jumper.

No...we haven’t seen Hunter. Smith is currently better in every single aspect.

Anyone expecting Hunter to be better than Smith is living in la la crimson land.

This year is the beginning of the end for another coaching era. It could be our worst year since Crean’s year 3.

And I bet last year you were saying Damezi would be the best, or one of the best, shooters on the team. Things change when you are playing against D1 players. Remember at one time Delray Brooks was thought to be the best player in the country... until he started playing against D1 players. I had high hopes for Hunter also, especially after he won the gold jersey, but the bottom line is, he's never played in a game against college players and now has an injury that derailed him for a full year. It's of no value what skills he had, if they are diminished by injury or a step up in competition.

Actually the reverse is true. Only Hunter may not be able to play 40 min a game, but expecting Smith, who has proven in 2 years he has no consistent perimeter shooting game to the point where the defenses do not even respect his shooting ability and do not guard Smith on the perimeter, and is the poorest FT shooter on the roster, to be a better offensive player than Hunter, who is very skilled offensively, is just not realistic. Smith is a good defensive player, and he can jump really high, those are his strengths. Smith needs to carve out a niche where he can help the team win by focusing on what he can do well, and not attempt to do things beyond his skill level offensively.

Wow. Let the season play out.
I expect IU to finish better than their predicted 11th place finish. And in 20-21 a big step up. Archie is just getting started at IU.

I've been waiting all afternoon to post this because I wanted to be 100% sure. I got a text this morning about it and admittedly I thought it was a rumor at first. I've been waiting to make sure its 100% before posting.
I can say with 100% confidence that Billy and his wife were in Bloomington this morning.
I don't see any scenario where he and his wife come to town and he doesn't take the job. It's happening!!!

I saw Delray Brooks score 43 points in a HS Regional game. At that time he was co-Mr. Basketball with Troy Lewis of Anderson.

I expect IU's defense to continue to improve, especially in the paint with more healthy low post bodies (DeRon, Brunk, TJD, Race, Smith). Better 3pt shooting as a team. Lower TO, smarter playing, better shot selection as a team. Better team chemistry. Deeper team, with less injuries.

And at that time you'd have been raving about how he had the best offensive skillset on the upcoming roster, etc.... Now, knowing what you now know about Delray, how would that narrative have changed if he'd also sat out a full year with an injury? Stop with the NBA potential, etc.... let's see him take the floor in college first!

Hunter has high skill level potential, the same as I thought Delray had. Yes, Hunter first needs to get healthy, and then see if he can perform in college like he did at a high level in HS. I have high expectations for a healthy Hunter. Not healthy, then not the player he was before his medical condition. I am excited to see a healthy Hunter playing in an IU uniform!

And so, were you disappointed in Delray's play after his freshman year? And, now Hunter's coming off a serious injury that's kept him out a year? See why I think it's silly to talk about NBA potential and best offensive skills on the roster? Sit back and see if he can even play in college and then at anything resembling a high level, or if he has that first year adjustment period.

I do expect our defense to improve. But our offense is going to take a major step back. We’re going to see a lot of halves in the 20s.

Everything else is just pure wishful thinking.

Wow, what a downer.
Play more offensive players if IU is going toward 20 point halves.

So, CTC went 12-20/3-15 in year three.

Care to make a wager on this, or are you just going to admit that you are nothing but a drama queen blowhard?

And by wager, I know you don't have any money, so it would be centered around vacating the board.

So, willing to back up your BS?

A playing Smith is better than a non-playing Hunter. You’re a fricking genius! Keep the words of wisdom coming - they’re awesome.

Every anti-IU troll here is a coward. None will back up their most dire predictions with a wager for cash or otherwise.

Do you and the other kid trolls who like your posts not know what the word “since” means? Grab a dictionary and catch up.

Play more offensive players if IU is going toward 20 point halves.
We lost an NBA lottery pick and Juwan Morgan, added a Butler backup and a couple 4 star recruits. Our offense is not going to improve. That’s just reality on planet Earth.

An injured NBA Lottery Pick that shot far worse than at any time he was healthy in his entire career. IU may get Hunter back with a similar versatile offensive skillset. Morgan was replaced by a McD All-American with more long term upside.
