You surely understand that we're operating under a fascist, right?

'Deriving power' is a very quaint idea. Trump is operating as a dictator and will do so until stopped. Which seems unlikely.lol ar

Putting aside whether you think tariffs are good policy, after a lot of bluster, Trump has essentially placed a 10% tariff across the board and other countries are relieved it’s only that much.

Art of the deal indeed.

You say that as if we -- ordinary Americans -- should be happy that our government is slapping what amounts to a 10% sales tax on many things we buy...or that eventually find their way into things we buy.

Our goal should be to have these rates as close to Zero as we can get them.

I agree, the goal should be to get as close to zero for zero as possible.

But if you’re someone who thinks tariffs are an absolute good, his strategy was more or less effective.

So, all taxes should be zero? I can get on board with that, but I assume that's not your point. The question should be are tariffs better taxes than incomes taxes (or other taxes)? If yes, what rates are best for Americans? Not to mention is outsourcing our manufacturing and assets sustainable long term. If no, how do you deal with it?

I’ve never really approached the question of taxes from a position of ideal rates. I always look at spending. Taxes should be proportional to the level of spending. How we apportion them, of course, is always a matter of debate.

What I think about spending/taxes was summed up very well by Mitch Daniels at his CPAC speech in 2011.

We Hoosiers hold to some quaint notions. Some might say we “cling” to them, though not out of fear or ignorance. We believe in paying our bills. We have kept our state in the black throughout the recent unpleasantness, while cutting rather than raising taxes, by practicing an old tribal ritual – we spend less money than we take in.
We believe it wrong ever to take a dollar from a free citizen without a very necessary public purpose, because each such taking diminishes the freedom to spend that dollar as its owner would prefer. When we do find it necessary, we feel a profound duty to use that dollar as carefully and effectively as possible, else we should never have taken it at all.

I wish I’d have written that. Whoever did thinks a lot like I do, and expresses it way more succinctly than I ever could.

But I was told by some cooler experts the stock market was going to tank hard and we were headed into a deep deep recession. Boy I wish I had listened and sold all my stocks. Too late now I guess I should have listened a month ago. Darn.

Oh trust me they will find a way to complain about this and tell us how awful it is. Have it at guys.

What is the deal? They average $50 billion a year in purchases of US military articles, services and training over several years. Did he take that and multiply it be 10 years and call that a deal? Details matter.

It disappoints me that Jake Tapper is doing this. With all sincerity, I've long thought of him as one of the better personalities in mainstream national media....left or right. As a former spokesman for a Dem politician, he's obviously more favorable to Dems. But I think he's done a better job than most at still doing his job properly and not allowing his own opinions to dictate his practice of journalism.

But for him to pass all the blame onto the Biden WH and Campaign is shameless. For him to be a co-author of a book about it is stunning.

There is absolutely no question that the media, by and large, were in on the ruse on Biden's condition and fitness for another 4 year term. And Tapper is not excluded from that.

Definitely a bad look.

It's too bad dems couldn't get behind a better, younger option in 2020. Then that person would have better positioned for 2024.

Now we are stuck with the only thing worse than a vegetable...Trump.

I think Biden was a wise choice in 2020. A very wise choice. And I was pulling for him - because it was a contest between him and Bernie Sanders.

But his decline was evident by early 2022 or so. That was the time for the Dem PTBs to exert pressure on him to step aside. But there was so much pressure not to after Dems outperformed expectations in the ‘22 midterms.

Time doesn’t stand still for anybody. And when somebody declines in old age, it rarely heads back in the right direction.

A few people spoke out about it. David Axelrod, Ezra Klein, Dean Phillips. But they were pilloried for undermining POTUS.

Tough situation.

You were wrong in your assessment. I've always considered him a partisan. I was right.

There was this thought that running Biden was the safe choice to defeat Trump in 2020 but I don't think he was anywhere close to the only option.

Come 2024 and voters as a whole having issues with long term memory, dems failed by not having an incumbent in place that could have stood a better chance. Until Trump and then Biden, most presidents get their 2 terms. so if dems had someone else in 2020, then they would likely still be there now

It was a wise political move. But it was obvious that Biden was declining in 2020. He hid away, for God's sake. A wise political choice, but a disaster for the country.
