Mike Woodson is one of the laziest college coaches I've ever seen

It dawned on me today that the real reason we have zero recruits committed and are relying almost exclusively on the transfer portal, is because Woodson would much rather have the NIL buy players in the portal (similar to NBA free agency) than to have to go out and actually build relationships on the recruiting trail. This allows him to pretty much take the summer off while other more competent coaches are out recruiting their teams of the future and building a culture at their respective programs. This became even more obvious with the rumor that Liam's mom said he hadn't even spoke to Woodson since he signed.

Woodson has only been here three years and already you're seeing a program with zero structure, half the kids entering the transfer portal on a whim, and no actual core of players to build around. An absolute revolving door with no end in sight. Woodson refusing to talk about it in press conferences makes it even worse.

Obviously there are MANY problems with the current IU coaching staff, but without a doubt laziness is the biggest which is absolutely unacceptable. Followed closely behind by the refusal to change. To be honest Woodson played at IU long before I was born, but currently his ego and blaming the fans this year while ignoring the obvious issues with the team and recruiting is quickly making me despise him.

The only somewhat silver lining is that we're only one year away from this likely being over.

This shit was obvious 3 years ago to anyone with a brain and no crimson shades. Was literally the worst college BB hire in modern history. Made no sense at the time and even less to continue this debacle.

IU was following the Juwan Howard and Penny Hardaway model: hire an alum with NBA coaching and/or playing history, sell recruits on being able to "get them to the league," and college coaching experience not required. Mike is 13 years older than Juwan and Penny. Didn't work out, time to pull the plug.

I started off the season on a more positive note but after watching this team be relatively uncompetitive for most of the year and watching Woodson refuse to acknowledge it while ranting against the fans has completely turned me against him. Throw in the zero recruits and refusal to put forth any effort on the trail and he absolutely needs to go.

Bob Knight didn’t do a lot of recruiting. Is he lazy?

You sure about that?? When I was a kid he was at 4 games of Kreigh Smith. Also listen to the stories of when RMk was recruiting Isaiah.
RMK absolutely recruited. Honestly he was ahead of his time in his recruiting approach. He won over the mom before the player.

So you were there at iu Knights first 3 years? He was lazy?
The comment calling Knight lazy was so dumb it wasn't even worth responding to.

Looking past the fact that Knight won a dozen conference titles and 3 national championships while Woodson's struggling to keep his team inside the top 100.

Knight would NEVER be recruitless with a team that's #1 in the Big10 in NIL money, especially with over 6 open slots. Woodson has been an embarrassment this year.

The only common denominator between RMK and Mike Woodson is that they knew each other. RMK, at worst, would walk out of a game coached by Woodson if he were alive....or walk on the sidelines, uninvited, and call him over with one of those teachable moments while his head is trying to fly off of his shoulders at best.

I saw him at Springs Valley in French Lick twice. Once to see Steve Land and once to watch Larry Bird. I know of other Southern Indiana schools he visited. So yes, he recruited a lot.

I think Sparks and Walker are examples of his laziness.

With respect to Sparks, I have to admit I thought he'd be able to contribute more than he did., even though he didn't fit was MW was looking for. Apparently, MW also misjudged his ability to contribute. Remember, before the season, the comments about how productive he was looking in workouts/informal scrimmages? WTH was that about? Woodson spoke highly of him at the time.

Then adding Walker but no guards....wonder what our connection was there? Because the guy's stats in 4 years at Miami were not impressive and would not seemingly have generated our interest. He ended up having his most efficient year in college, imo, but he was still mediocre. We were told 'he's better than nothing', and that was probably right. My only ask then of Woodson was that he forbid him to take 3s, because he was a lifetime 21%, and liked to shoot them. He took fewer here but Woody would never tell a player not to shoot if he's open........so he took 17, and made 2.

One of? I challenge anyone to name his equal.

Cant even be bothered to pick up the phone and call his ONLY recruit.

It has been a very tough year for former IU coaches also (Ignore Sampson).

Davis 1-31,
Crean still recovering from 2021-2022 season
Arch 12-20.

What a gallery of coaching choices.
Hire someone that has proven they can teach the game of basketball at a high level.

I think its possible to find that person, that also employs a more modern style, and has a personality that will energize the fan base... but the top criteria should be the benchmark. If the right combo of the other stuff, combined with who would actually take the job leads to someone that plays a slower style, or that isn't as dynamic a personality...so be it.

But for God's sake, just hire a proven, solid, college basketball coach.

There have to be 10, maybe 15 coaches out there who could do this, right? We aren’t looking for a needle in a haystack. Tons of other schools are playing good bball.

He has a massive ego and thinks kids will come in play for him because he was a bad NBA coach 15 years ago. He also thinks because he played at IU 45 years ago the fan base should love and worship him. Yes he is beyond lazy because his ego is so big he has zero idea what it takes to be a good college coach. If there was no NIL for him to buy players I am not sure he could even get 10 guys to suit up for him.

He’s an NBA coach who always had a GM to take care of getting players. It’s one of reasons why NBA coaches fail at the collegiate level.

Yes...probably more than that. Take away all the coaches that are coaching perennial top 20 teams...and I still think you're list is 15-20 strong, at least.

Bob Knight was motivated by winning, something I'm not sure this staff totally understands.

This is what's caught me off guard more than anything else, like where is that ego coming from? He's won nothing on his coaching career.

It would be easier to stomach If he was more humble and willing to change but he acts like IU has been great under him. Which it obviously has not.

Definitely doesn't match Kelvin for phone calls to recruits.

And we grabbed Tom Crean and Archie Miller from that large group of strong head coaches.
Hey, they looked good on paper. (Longing for the halcyon days of Crean. Ha-ha.)

Absolutely........he might have been my favorite all-time player, but he's treating this job like a part-time retiree. And some humility and awareness at this point would go a long way.

Certainly seems like his effort has lessened even more. But look at the good players he has brought in. All have been transfers or last minute grabs where long term effort was not required. This likely won’t end well…

Yes last minute grabs which are never guaranteed at all. And woodson was sitting in a much better position then with a core of TJD ,etc coming back. He is now coming off an awful year with not much of anything coming back.

I have honestly never really seen a coach with this big of an ego who has never won dorn in his life. He has the arrogance and ego of a guy who has won two national titles. It really make him not very likeable.
