Mich: Is Juwan the shiny new toy in the B1G coaching ranks.

Penny Hardaway and Juwan Howard are the shiny new toys in the NCAA coaching ranks. But can they actually coach at the D1 level?

Can Howard actually coach? Will be the next question.

I had a friend who coached the men's and women's tennis teams of a junior college one year...this fella is considered by many to be one of the best amateur tennis coaches in the country, if not the world...

Anyways...he could coach and the women's team won a national championship that year.

He was a stop-gap measure, I can't remember why the other coach left, so it was an interim-type position.

He hated college coaching and the "babysitting" required.

The point is...a whole lot of variables to college coaching...this is either a brilliant hire or a bomb in disguise.

Is that really a question? Look at their careers. Is there really an honest question of whether or not they can coach?

Yes, it's a great question that only time will tell. Surely you're not saying that good players become good coaches 100% of the time. Even you are not that stupid.

Smart long-term players are almost always good coaches if they can get the right players. College coaching is all about recruiting.

Oh, yes he is that stupid. Sports has many stories of great players that didn't make great coaches. You can start with the great (player) Isiah Thomas. You could add Kevin McHale, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor and Wes Unseld. It would be much harder to name some great players in any sport that became great coaches. Look at Wayne Gretsky - he we probably the greatest hockey player in history, but not so much as a coach. How'd Bart Starr do as Head Coach at Green Bay? I remember, and it wasn't very impressive.

Name some great players that became good coaches in college. I think John Wooden was a very good (PU fans would say great) player in college and a great college coach. Alford was a very good college player and most would say he has been a good to very good college coach, but not close to great. Bill Russell did very well as a player coach for the Celtics. Others aren't ringing a bell and I'm sure they're few and far between.

You don't suppose it's complemented by x's and o's accumen? Say, the ability to break down zone defense? :)

I’d say that’s something you can easily learn through film. It’s not rocket science. What you can’t learn through film are the connections and reputations these guys have.

Tony Bennett was a very good player. Kruger, Boeheim, Mike White all very good.

To be fair we don’t have a lot of examples of great NBA players who go coach in college. Most of the time those guys make so much money the last thing they want to do is go back and do the college grind.

IThomas, CMullin, sucked as college coaches. There are many others....

Those two were never really given a chance. FIU and St Johns? Not exactly great destination jobs. And those guys were much older than Penny or Howard. Kids today didn’t even remember them. You can bet they remember Howard playing with Lebron James and Wade on those Heat teams.

Thomas was fired after 3 seasons and Mullin after 4 and they weren't "really given a chance" yet Miller should be fired after 2 (and u think your were saying that after season 1). You're such a hypocrite and definitely not unbiased nor objective.

I don’t think coaching at FIU or St Johns is the same chance as coaching at IU. Catch up.

This is spot on. You know who could also recruit josh pastner and Matt Doherty. They both sucked as coaches. Penny and Howard can relate to the younger guys but can they coach is the question. You can recruit the best but if u can’t get them to play as a team, then you’re not gonna make it

I think the jury is still out on Coach Josh Pastner. He was very brainy at Arizona. The Memphis stop was a mixed bag, and the present stint at Georgia Tech is a work in progress. Also, this is ACC now: murderous competition.

"Pastner was a player on the 1997 Arizona Wildcats men's basketball national championship team, and an assistant coach at the University of Arizona under Lute Olson and at the University of Memphis under John Calipari. He was named the 2013 Sporting News Conference USA Coach of the Year, and the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Coach of the Year."

Fair enough, but he’s recruited really good players and has nothing to show for it except moving in on to Georgia tech. It won’t be like before mike miller gets a gig as a head coach and steals pennys thunder. If he doesn’t make atleast a sweet 16 the talent he has coming in then it won’t bode well. Last yr was a train wreck. Watching his team flop like fish all over the court against Tennessee was an embarrassment. That’s something puke does and he shouldn’t follow in that direction because only puke gets those calls
