Memorial Stadium getting new LED lights

I went by the stadium yesterday and wondered what they were doing.

I noticed the city has repaved 17th Street at least from College Ave up to the IU Credit Union. They were also working on Dunn Street next to the credit union as they had the street closed. Not sure if they were repaving or working on underground utilities.

Also found the city has installed a new stoplight on North College Ave at 13th Street where the CVS pharmacy is located. It's not active yet but my guess it will be soon.

Every enhancement to MS helps the program be attractive to fans and recruits. New lighting now makes my long held thoughts of night games being positive for promoting game atmosphere to enjoy. Kinda think more tailgaters will want to come into the complex vs staying outside during night games.

Oh good - just what North College needs, another stoplight.

As long as they are timed with the others then it really makes no difference. If you keep to the speed limit you just drive through them all anyway.
I've driven College most of my adult life and it's hit or miss. Sometimes I breeze through and other times I hit every light. Just a crap shoot.

….now, on to that South Endzone, which was a home run in aesthetics, is missing one thing: a giant pool on the deck. How many drunk students wouldn’t love getting their name drawn to spend an entire home game watching it from a glass pool. There would be waiting lists for that. But, do it right. You bring it in for the Sept and early Oct games and then simply pull it until next year. The thing is a hit. Students cannot wait to see if they are one of a hundred bodies to be in that pool each game week. They announce it as Rooftop At The Rock Swimmin Quarry!” Swim. Watch the game. Take your tops off…it’s all good at Rooftop Quarry Hole!

40 years ago, Indiana had its first portable lighting at Memorial Stadium. Who was there?

I wasn't. (Facepalm)

Scheduled to work at the fabulous Le Petit Cafe, no one to switch shifts with so I listened to it on the radio as I washed dishes.

I remember it well as it was the only home game I didn't attend during my undergrad years.

Was in late HS and though I went with my parents back then I doubt it. Certainly remember the "temp" era though before we finally got the perms installed. For a program our size and status, we got perms in there pretty early I thought.

I wasn't at the first game under lights, against Syracuse in 1982...

But, I was at the next game against Iowa two weeks later...
... IIRC, they had lights at that game and it ended under the lights.

It was a great game but a bummer of an ending.... IU could not score on the last play of the game, McNabb caught Babe's pass but was tackled at the 1 yard line..... lost 24-20.

Musco Lighting from Iowa. They pioneered the portable sports lighting field.

They're still removing the old lights, although the new ones are up over the press box. I'll find a way to put something together as the season gets closer, or if someone who actually lives in bloomington shares something.
Do you know what brand was selected? I only saw the RFP

Bill Cook had a lot to do with permanent lights in MS. He wanted them installed for the Drum Corp International competitions Star of Indiana competed in. First time DCI was in Bloomington, it was at Armstrong. Within a year or two lights were installed at MS and that's where the DCI competitions were held for a few years.

MUSCO also provided the lighting when Mellencamp played the stadium the first time.

I can't remember if I was there or not but it was such a novel concept, the first nighttime game, that I probably was, if but only in spirit.

On page 5 of the RFP, it mentions alternative 1 vs 2. I wonder if they went with the 150 or the 200 ft candles. Also, did they get the dimmer switch? That might be a fun knob to play with at various times of the game, if not just halftime shows with pyrotechnics or glow sticks. That RFP document had 110 pages to it. I'm glad I never went into electrical engineering-technicality puts me to sleep, plus I might have gone to PU. There is a science to everything, including morning shitz as it relates to coffee consumption. Now, if you'll please excuse me...

Having been reminded of corn hole (Damn, that roadside stand corn is sweet this time of year) someone mentioned brighter lights might encourage more to come back into the stadium after halftime. I don't think so. Most of those slackers are wives with their younger kids, just along for the ride. They'd rather play corn-hole in the lot or drink their vodka gimlets just to feel a part of something much bigger. Those with wives who truly appreciate the game of football are the lucky ones. I've never been one so lucky, three wives now and still counting, along with countless girlfriends too few to mention, but it is what it is and I manage to carry on.

I'm really looking forward to the Illinois game. What a great way to start the season, kicking off the Labor Day Weekend. We'll find out right away if prosperity is near. This may be the year.
