Memorial Stadium getting new LED lights

1982 was my freshman year. I am happy to say I never missed a home football game in four years at IU.

I only missed one BB game at IU during my tenure: the infamous chair throw game against PU. I was in Nashville for a Phi Mu sorority dance. Should have gone to the game!

I went by the stadium yesterday and wondered what they were doing.

I noticed the city has repaved 17th Street at least from College Ave up to the IU Credit Union. They were also working on Dunn Street next to the credit union as they had the street closed. Not sure if they were repaving or working on underground utilities.

Also found the city has installed a new stoplight on North College Ave at 13th Street where the CVS pharmacy is located. It's not active yet but my guess it will be soon.

New one at 11th St. too.

13th and College seems a strange place to add a stoplight..

are they adding one at 13th and Walnut too? that would really suck going down that hill.

as for 11th and College, (top of the hill), there has been a stop light there since forever on the College side.

as for hitting the lights on College, seems like cars going north on College from 17th would hit that as a red, and back up at 13th, thus screwing up the traffic flow of cars proceeding north on College that were already going north on College from north of 17th.

The new stoplight is at 14th Street and was installed because a massive new student housing complex is going up just to the east of the intersection.

IU73 actually misspoke; the new light is at 14th and Walnut. It's not yet active (as of Friday afternoon.) The new one at 11th and Walnut went live Thursday, I believe. As with all the lights on the north/south drags through town, it will all be about the timing. I drive that route several times a day and it's nearly always smooth sailing once you get synched up.

Yes. And I hadn't thought about that new complex, but common sense says that is exactly the reason.

but wouldn't that just offset the loss of bookstore traffic at 14th and College?

that said, how many new units are going up?

But man, when you don't...

Cars ”going north on College” at that point would have far greater issues than stop lights.

This article says 440 units and 1,061 bedrooms.

thanks for the article. i wonder how many bedrooms the old complex had.

440 units, 1061 BRs, is huge.

that said, 1061 bedrooms, 679 parking spaces.

while kids will no doubt occupy some BRs, 2 adults will occupy many as well. (and girlfriends/boyfriends not on lease moving in always happens, not to mention visitors).

i don't know what percent of students these days do without cars, but that seems like a problem to me.

i wonder if the city will allow complex residents to each get 2 street parking permits, (1 resident, 1 visitor), for the area, and if so, how that will go down with the rest of the neighborhood.

That is roughly 1400 residents on lease and more than half will not have a parking spot. Cluster

Yep, Bo didn't gain any Hoosier fans with his complaining after the game.
Somewhere out there is a video of the coaches show from Sunday, the day after. I watched Bo’s show the following day. I think it may have been WTTV 4 that showed it?
It was gold.
Bo was complaining from the beginning of the tape. Calling out every Michigan unit under the sun. “See, we completely miss this guy to allow the defensive tackle to penetrate and make the tackle” and “We didn’t pick up this guy off the edge, completely unblocked.”
“They should have stopped the game right here to allow him to give the signals.”

it is a must have for any collection.
A half hour of Bo in misery.

One and olny game I ever rushed the field. Stood soaking wet with double birds at the Mi fans.
Helped carry the cross bar to Showalter where we placed it in the hands of the mermaid and swam/splashed around in the pouring rain. That is a memory I am taking to my grave. I think the guys from Dunn/Dodd House took it home.

Sounds like fun. I must have left the party early.

Mal didn’t have a sideline helmet rule, but most guys had them on pretty much the whole game because of the weather. I knew Eddie Thomas and he said that, plus the noise from the crowd, made it hard to talk with teammates on the sideline. Joe Huff still reveled in that game for years after.

The best part of this is that it wasn't all that loud and he still sobbed. The open ended stadium was not full due to the weather and Mi had 5,000 fans there beck when they traveled better.

Bo made himself look so very foolish.

I was at the Michigan game too. Bo kept coming onto the edge of the field to complain about the noise and all that did was make our crowd louder. Refs finally had enough of his whining and threw an unsportsmanlike flag on him.

Also remember we got the ball back and the rain suddenly stopped or slowed way down to where we could move the ball and score. We kick off to Meatchicken and the rain suddenly starts pouring again. It was the one time the football gods helped us to win. Still remember that to this day!!

I was there as well.it was crazy.Me and my buddy snuck in a 12 pack in all those layers of clothes.
I had a coat with a red liner on and when we got back to the car I took my coat off and the red lining bled through all my clothes.
We stopped to warm up and dry off at a gas station,my shirt and pants were pink😂

They’re currently adding more light poles on the East side, looks like between the two current structures. Will definitely help.

Heard they’ll now be able to redirect some of the lights toward the corners, which we’re getting pretty dark.

Any word if they will be operational for the first game?
