Maybe it's time.....

Let’s change our identity because we’ve been losing. That should do it. Once the old people don’t have to give any effort to know who is actually on the team we’ll start winning again.

Yay! Let’s change one of the most iconic jerseys in the sport!!!

This post just shows how good Don Fischer really is. He even nails, the opposing team’s players instantly. Legend
I assumed he studies the opposing roster in advance and at least learns the number/names of the players that are likely to play. Over the years he's probably developed an ability to quickly learn names. He also has the roster right in front of him that he can look at during the broadcast.

And he’s a professional sports broadcaster. With 30 plus experience.

He beat an upstart Duke program led by a fresh faced Coach K in NYC...

39 points and game winner, as I recall.

Smart dude. Not what RMK was looking for. That whole class looked good on paper but didn't mesh well, obviously.
I’ve always thought he played timid after his injury.

Ok then.

So you are OK with them (having accomplished nothing) getting their “flowers” (hate the term) but not all the “flowers.”

I am absolutely cool with that.

But the stars on the shorts ( all of which are legitimate but currently irrelevant with respect to the last several decades) ——
Should they remain?
Are they somehow motivational or just a tired reminder of another era?
Don’t seem to be respected by the currently purchased labor.

And we deride all other institutions that speak of their ancient past achievements. Odd

Start fresh.

Maybe we build like a WWII memorial outside SSAH and quit alluding to a game/attitude/reality relative
to a game gone by.

Way by.

Thoughts?
Dumb

I’m open to the idea of completely changing things. Not because we have been losing, but because college basketball as I used to know it no longer exists.

It is now all about NIL, and one year rosters. The sport is totally different now.

I’m all for tradition, but maybe those things could exist in a museum.

Drilling down a bit.....The purpose of no names on the jerseys is to promote "team", not individuals. Makes sense if your team has some longevity. In today's world, a "team" doesn't need to gel, nor can it, because there isn't time in a year to gel. A team today replaces working parts on the plane while it is flying. The madness of the portal and NIL has mutated this thing into a flowerbed of "annuals" to be replanted......and no "perennials" that restart every year on their own. Even if a team wins the Natty or gets to a Final Four....those players will have come and gone before anyone at those institutions got to know them. It is now common for a "college basketball player" to complete his four years at 2, 3 or 4 different schools, especially if he's any good; then it isn't even going to be 4 years. They are independent contractors....travelling salesmen...call them whatever you want. Even the NBA can't match this kind of mobility...because they at least have "contracts" that extend for multiple years. Its more "current project" than team nowadays. Kind of like a Hollywood production....assembling a specific group of actors for this one movie...then they break up and move on to another project. I guess you could say....might as well put the names on the jerseys so we can at least remember who was on the team this or that year. At least photos will help us remember who they were.

Yes. Teams can barely keep the Kreigh Smith's and Steve Eyl's on a team for long anymore. Those guys were always intregal to team success. I'll always give accolades to them, and Brian Sloan types.

Lost to UCONN and Rip Hamilton and El Amin who lost in E8 to UNC later.

that was also the year we lost in ann arbor by 48 points, and Coach Knight refused to call a TO and give his players a rest/change. lol

That year didn't end great. We lost the last 3 in regular, lost to PU in BTT and then by 10 to uconn. We had a nice roster that year. Collier, Recker, AP, Guyton and Lewis. Haston was red shirted that year.

Is that the year Lewis threw the inbounds pass into the Iowa big's face? Lol

I wouldn’t change anything. I’m a UK fan but miss when we were peers. Like we were a bigger deal than UNC vs Duke.

Indiana is a brand. Don’t lose the stripes and uniforms. Just get the right guy and be what you are supposed to be so I can go back to hating you all and look forward to that game more than any.

I remember being scared you all will get more titles than us. That is the brand.

The whole thing about “it’s what’s on the front” and no names makes it more “team” has become kinda cheesy and outdated. I watched four pretty good teams playing “TEAM” basketball in the final four…they all had names on the back. I haven’t seen an IU “team” worth a f*** in several years. It’s not like leaving the names off the back gives us some kind of special power.

Jesus Effin Christmas!!! Thank you. A voice of reason from a Kentucky fan. Damn! Thank you. Well said.

Tradition matters more at places like Indiana. The candy stripes no names on the jerseys blue collar players either except it or leave.

Give me a break with this shit.

Next you'll tell me "tradition matters more to the Deep South" than other places.

Yes, dude. It surely does.

Shoot me when my life becomes all about reliving the past and hokey sayings about "working people like me" being superior.

What's your next brainy bit of advice? "Skip college - it's for woke dopes! Stay home. Stay exactly like you are. Don't turn that blue collar even the slightest shade of light blue, sissy!"

30 years ago we gave up our tradition of winning. We’re all still here. I think we can handle names on jerseys.

UM didn't win a national championship in FB 26 years later by replacing their old school helmets with a giant M or script Michigan, they hired a competent coach after several terrible hires. Let's hope DD is the good hire after a parade of incompetence and we don't resort to killing tradition. The poor structure around NIL and portal threatens the concept of team enough. I don't think the absence of names on the jersey is keeping us from winning or landing talent.

1 time he overachieved, yippee. All that wasted talent.

Andrae was a good player though. He had his moments. It's always the case when a team is lacking star power, they look to the ones they have and want more from them. But from my perspective Patterson was one of the only ones pulling his own weight on those teams.
Kind of like Al Durham, in a way. Kid pulled his own weight easily, just wasn't a superstar. But Archie brought in Khristian Lander, who shot a jumper like a soccer throw in off the backboard. And then people would rag on Durham for not being better.
Good teams are full of guys doing more instead of less.
The 95-98 era, and then 18-21 era both were doing less with more.
