Looks like last year

You are right that this season is not lost on one bad half BUT.....

When you see the same, IMO, poor coaching going on year after year, one bad half is an indicator to me that Woodson has not changed the way the team plays. Same poor 3 point D, same lack of fundementals, same, same, same.

I would have fired him after last year and it is going to take one hell of a good year for me to soften that position.
Twenty wins and just making the tourney ain't it!

Fair. FWIW, I will be disappointed in just 20 wins. Barring major injuries, this roster is clearly loaded, both with talent and experience. And since I contend “it’s the jimmy’s and the joes, not the Xs and Os” this year ought to be a really good year. Last year, it was a terrible roster. In particular, XJ was one of my least liked players to ever to put on an IU uniform. As a supposed leader, it didn’t surprise me to see them basically quit. I know it’s early, but I have a better feeling about this group, and my expectations for the season are high. So I give Woody a pass for last year, and I think this is the year to show us what he’s got.
Also, stinker first half, yes. But wow, what a glorious second half. Incredible defend and hustle. Overall, the 90 points they scored is the result of a potent offense. I’m not sure why the fan focus isn’t a little bit on the second half.

I’m sure you can figure out why.
If we had a new coach, with the exact same results against Eastern, many would have praised him for halftime adjustments etc.
It is what it is at this point.

because Haters love to hate.

Woody has made it easy to dislike him. I thought he had learned from his previous 3 years but so far he is still operating like an NBA coach. That's the only coaching experience he has though.

We are getting out-hustled by a less talented team.
Anyone want to second guess Mullins or McNeeley's decisions?

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Illinois has also played EIU & SIUE. They beat EIU by 112-67 to our 90-55 (+10 for them), and SIUE by 90-58 v. us at 80-61 (+13 for them). Not encouraging.

Then how does Cig immediately win at a historically bad program with a roster 7 times the size of basketball? It is way, way, way, way easier to win at IU basketball in the state known for basketball: give it up!

Cig is winning right now, while Woody, according to you, "LIKELY" and "HOPEFULLY" wins in year 4. What a crock.
No knock on what Cig has done, because for IU football, it has been historical. But it’s not like we have had this grueling schedule. It is also not like we don’t have some very good talent. And Cig certainly has something to do with that. But let just wait and see what Woody does. We are 2-0 with both games being blowouts. That’s not to say we won’t crap the bed still, but we did beat TN in a charity game. They are a solid team and if you watched it, neither team played this like some fashion show.

Man, you’ve got some measurables there. That means Illinois is, hm, lemme see, if I add up those numbers (or subtract?), Illinois is +23 better? Or wait, maybe I add those and take the average, +11.5 better than IU. I’m convinced.

Hopefully that metric carries over to football. OSU beat Nebraska by 4 and we beat them by 49 so IU will probably, by that logic, beat OSU by 45 or so.

For all you Woody supporters, did any of you watch Duke vs Kentucky tonight? Those teams are at a different level than us. The way Pope spreads the floor is a joy to watch. Dude is killing it in year one.

We get boat raced by either of these teams. Too athletic AND better coached.

You will be attacked here today after making a factual post like you did. You can't say things like that. 😂 😂

Absolutely stupid to compare the scores this early. Stupider to get discouraged by a point margin.

IU can easily play with Duke or Kentucky. Today , tomorrow and in March. Boat raced? That’s comical. Slobbering on Purdue and Kentucky is becoming the norm around here. Never thought I would see that.

Duke shot less than 40% from the field and was 4-23 (17%) from three. This board would have lost its collective shit had IU had an offensive showing with those numbers. Would have been 4-5 "Fire Woodson" threads started within 10 minutes of the game ending and probably 2-3 more started in-game.

I've been patient with Woody. Do you recall the last few years when we play any top non-conference opponents? We are never in these games. You don't get to hope for a win. The only hope we have is fans is whether we can keep it within 20. Kansas, Connecticut, Arizona...

I didn't see any team last night that would "boat race" Indiana. I did see Flagg turn the ball over twice in the last minutes of the game and lose.

I think Indiana has gaurds that keep up with both those teams but not enough shooters. Maybe there will be a tournament at the end of season and we will get to watch?

If you hate what Woodson runs offensively, then you also had to hate the second half from Duke. The entire thing was ISO ball for Flagg. Pretty awful basketball IMO.

Oh its hard for some to realize the changes taking place within today's game and how it is evolving.

Many have no clue what they're watching. They just want to complain.

Second half Duke was bad, in particular Flagg. Definitely played hero ball.
I doubt he was the one calling the sets and plays. Scheyer wants to play through Flagg so ... blame the coach .. it's obvious Scheyer can't make half time adjustments and runs a boring simple offense that can't shoot and is too focused on iso ball with Flagg while other players stand in the corner and watch... lol

This was my point exactly. The original post said something about us getting boat raced by both teams in the Duke UK game because they are better coached. Duke had 4 guys standing around while their best player went 1 on 1 all night so I'm not sure where that's coming from, but it's pretty weak analysis.

You don’t think he was being sarcastic?

IU guards? I like Galloway(backup), in fact he is rated the second best PG at 2.26 in the conference behind PU Smith at 3.06. Rice on the other hand is rated the 14th best PG in the BT at 0.54 and that's with playing a soft schedule! You don't even want to know where Carlye and Cupps are rated! Galloway was bye far the best rated guard IU had coming into this year, and the stats says he is still the best. The playing needs to catch up to the HYPE some day!

JFC.....I just pointed out that we had played the exact same two teams essentially back-to-back, and Illinois had had somewhat better results. That is somewhat concerning because we were thought to be a better team than Illinois, and both teams had a similar amount of turnover. I did not say the whole year is f*^*ked, just that the results to date were not very encouraging.

The relevant question is have you Googled him? Cig immediately wins at a historically bad program, while Woody is mediocre at a historically good program after 3+ years with a much smaller roster. Bottom line: Woody has no excuse. College coaching experience matters.
And, if you want to pile on to your own argument, just point out that a basketball coach only has to find, what?, 2-3 jewels in the portal to turn a team around, while a football coach has to find, what, 15? 20? 25?

I think examples to point to are Nick Zeisloft and Ware. Jewels can come from anywhere. Woodson needs to find more like that -- Rice may be one but, so far, old, boring Galloway is getting far, far more assists than the bright new star from the northwest.

Now what is the chances IU basketball plays only 1 team over .500 and that one team is only a game over .500? I would say Woody would have a good chance at winning over 30 games if that was the case.
Does the Tennessee game enter into your thinking.

(Beating Rick Barnes is always a public service.)

IU was 3-9 last year in football, which was part of a 3-year crappy stretch. IU basketball has a storied history, and Woody has been mediocre. Woody better have a hell of a year.
Oh please.

Don't anyone ever say "storied" again. That would include Player John Wooden at that open hog feeding operation up north. Wooden was "storied" as a player in those days (rare player doing driving layups in those days).

Give what up? How often does a turnaround like this happen in football? Almost never. It rarely happens in a year in basketball. If we compete for a Big Ten title Woodson is fine and is here to stay.
The true test will be whether Cignetti can repeat this year's success next year, and the next year, and the next year ....

Doesn't the Tennessee game matter? Wasn't Tennessee trying to win too?
