Live Game Thread: Indiana vs Illinois

Ryan Phillip's tweet sums it up. Again a week to prepare and we actually were up 4 with 13 to go and just get steamrolled.

I'm going to say it again, the no-shows from this team after halftime have been happening ALL YEAR. Mike Woodson needs to figure out and solve that. Schedule doesn't get any easier. Good teams will bury the Hoosiers if they keep doing this. #iubb

Was just thinking about this. In most of the big 10 losses, Wisconsin, Iowa, today, Michigan, we came on the locker room in the second half and look totally flat and disjointed. There’s definitely a pattern there. RMK always said, most important periods in each game are the last four minutes in the first half, and the first four minutes of 2nd half.

Coaching staff needs to get them open. The Illinois coaching staff was certainly able to get open shots for their players.
What? Illinois dumped it to Kofi and we had to double and triple him because TJD couldn’t come close to guarding him. They didn’t have to run anything for anyone. And on the other end of the court Davis was guarded straight up by Kofi all day so they can stick with shooters. If your AA is dominated that much there isn’t much a coach can do.

That's why simply saying illinois is better than us doesnt do it for me. I mean we killed ohio state and home and beat purdue. We are capable of at least making this a game instead of getting blown out. After illinois went up 6 we appeared to just fold.

Two key moments in the game, first half, Durr gets away with a hard foul on KC, no call. Next thing you know he’s got 3.

Illini have back to back air balls. Crowd is going nuts. IIRC they hit back to back threes and go on a 10-0 run.

In both situations IU had opportunities but just failed to step up.

There are other ways of getting a shooter open than a double team. Run an f'ing play, get creative: if you can't do that, then you shouldn't be coaching.

We actually ran a number of plays for Stewart today. If you can’t see that you shouldn’t be posting.
I saw a few, big dog. Most of the time, we run a dribble drive type offense: how many open shots for our shooters did that produce today? If you can't answer that question, then maybe you shouldn't be posting, asshole.

Haha name calling. Solid reply. We miss a lot of pretty open shots. The bottom line was our 3 best players shot like 12 for 33 and a lot of those were looks we wanted. Not going to win much playing like that no matter who the coach is.

You made a snotty comment: I'll dish it right back, big guy. I watched an offense struggle to put up 21 in the 2nd half: it wasn't just missing shots, it was an offense not producing good looks.

Sure there was some of both. But overall we didn’t compete in the second half because out best players missed the vast majority of their looks that were good offensively. And defensively our AA couldn’t handle theirs.

I wasn’t trying to be snotty. You said we didn’t run plays for guys that I saw a lot of plays being ran for. Harder to get open when they don’t even have to shade a bit towards our best offensive player.

Kopp didn’t shoot the ball at all but Stewart took 7 shots and almost every one of them was a play ran specifically for him. How many plays should we be running for him in your opinion over TJD, Race, and Johnson?

Kopp not even taking one shot shows just how broken we were in offense today.

Bob Knight sure found a way to make Steve Alford the Big Ten's all time leading scorer (until Calbert), and Steve wasn't very athletic. There are ways to get somebody open other than a damn double team on a big: we didn't do that very well today. Illinois had IU figured out by the 2nd half, and IU did not adjust.

They are a big part of the issue - if they're not making 3's they have zero value. No D, no rebounds.
I think I can put Geronimo in this camp as well. His defense is atrocious.

His rebounding helps.... but other than that.... on D he is lost during the game.
Loses his man all the time.

This is a footnote on the game. We needed TJD to give us something today.

We supposedly have three point shooters but they don't get shots. And they all graduate this year. I cringe at the thought of lander and galloway launching threes next year. I mean we will have zero threats next year.

Agreed. Very few can handle Kofi 1 on 1 but we definitely need TJD to come close to impacting the game like Kofi on offense. Today he didn’t and Race and Johnson both shot poorly too. Not a good recipe for a win.

They are making them. You must mean taking/getting open. They hit the ones they get. Did you see any kick outs? Our other players don’t pass it out. X is one of them. Lander actually does a better job at kicking to open shooters but he’s bad at everything else.

He only played 16 minutes and is primarily a spot up shooter who gets shots off double teams or in transition. They didn’t double at all today and we didn’t get out and run much unfortunately.
Illinois is almost as good defensively than us statistically. It showed today.

Good lord. This isn’t a screen 20 times shot clock. We got Stewert open but you can’t do that all game long. Why do you think the dribble drive took off. They aren’t going to leave our two best shooters. That’s why x and race are open.

IU doesn't exactly have players that can consistently get their own bucket off the dribble. Maybe try something else every now and again?

Absolutely. We are a catch and shoot. It’s just who we are but we also don’t find open shooters well. Lander did but he can’t do anything else well.

I guess they are just a bad matchup for us. With Kofi in the middle and TJD in foul trouble there was no need to double team. And their guards are good enough and quick enough to stop fast breaks.

Yeah I think they are a bad match up for sure. We just made it worse by not being able to take advantage of Race’s size advantage at the 4, and TJD/Johnson being no shows offensively.

Plus Rob being out hurts more than people realize imo. Not only is he our best perimeter defender but he has a knack for being able to turn bigs over with quick double teams or digs without losing his man.

I see better shooting in high school faves . 3 and ft
Yes against weaker D and and at a shorter distance (just under 20’).
The college line needs to be longer And is 22’ 1.75”

If you remember when a 2-3 zone was commonplace, many old fashioned collegiate zone buster specialists would feast on a 20’ three pt. line. (I’m sure Woody would have).

His vision needs work. He had shooters open today.
Woody seemed pretty disappointed in his starters in his press conference. He said that’s why he pulled them at the end of the game.

We have made some strides as a team imo. We still need to make more to be a good team. Hopefully this is one of them.
