I wanted to start a new & broader thread about Leal and 2020/21 recruiting generally that stays away from the bickering about race......that stuff never goes anywhere........

Anyway, looking at the 2020 class right now, I believe there would be 2 projected schlarships:

Freshmen (next year): TJD; Franklin; Brooks (hopefully)
Sophs: Thompson; Hunter; Rob P.; Jake F.; D. Anderson
JRS: C. Moore; Smith; Al Durham
SRS: D. Davis; Green

Now I know that there are many ifs, ands, and buts about that projection, but stay with me for the present......

To me, it looks like the top priorities would be a true center, and a point guard. I think right now #3 would be a 6'4"-6'5" shooting guard. If we recruit one of those for 2020, we would have Al as a SR, Anderson as a JR, and Franklin as a Soph when he came in.

If Peegs site is to be believed, for '20 we've offered PG Caleb Love out of MO; SG Ethan Morton from PA; 6-6 A Jackson from NY, 6-10 I Jackson from Ohio, 7-0 Z. Loveday from OH; and 6-3 combo guard N. Burnett from Cal. The rivals rankings for these guys are: Love 34; Morton 54; A. Jackson 40; I Jackson 17; Loveday 49; and Burnett 33. Reading between the lines, it seems like our best cahnces are with Love & Morton.....we look like we're in the top 3-5 schools for each.

Now back to Leal for a minute. He's #79 on Rivals and has a nice offer list, including Stanford, Butler, Iowa, Maryland, and Xavier. To me, he looks impressive on video. However, the remaining offers are all rated higher and have even more impressive offer lists.......here's some other things I've read about Leal......he has a 4.3 GPA (I assume on a 4 scale, someone set me straight if that's not correct), his recruiting has 'blown up' this past summer, and he bleeds Cream & Crimson (he's been a frequent visitor). What I don't know, which I'd like to know, is exactly how good he is as an outside shooter......if anyone knows the stats, please advise. To me, if he's Hulls level good as a shooter (a tough standard obviously), I don't see how we can pass, although I understand we may have as few as 2 'ships depending on how things play out.

One thing to consider....if we can't get Love in '20, do we wait until '21 and put everything in on Lander out of Evansville? I would think we could go without another PG in the '20 class if necessary. The first year Green is gone, Rob would be a JR, and Lander (or whoever if we don't get Lander) would be a freshman. As far as I know, our only '21 offers to date are to Lander, Furst, and T Clark, the #1 player in the class........so obviously Lander & Furst are targets 1 & 2 for '21.

Thoughts? Corrections? Other info?

Furst and Lander were both at 2018 IU Hoosier Hysteri.
Furst is the top ranked Indiana HS player in the 2021 class, in the top 20 in the nation, which is future McD AA level.

I disagree on the true center. Those are few and far between. Archie likes 2 post guys who can stretch and 3 guards with length. TJD type is the closest to a post player you will see.

From what I’ve heard Michigan is Lander’s dream school and he’s just waiting for them to offer. I’d love to have the kid but we definitely need a backup option there.

As I always say, get the best players possible and worry about the pieces later.

Get Furst!!
6'9" Soph, mobile, skilled, and still growing.

Sure.....I should have been more specific.....if TJD had a twin that would be ideal for Archie's system. Something along those lines would be similar to the Tolbert/Turner combo back in the day.

I would just like to see a 2nd 6-8 to 6-10 guy who is completely comfortable playing from 15' in offensively & defensively.

Furst can be that guy, and Brooks is long and plays much bigger than his height.

Assuming that we get Brooks added to our class this year, then I think that we might see a transfer. I will not speculate on who, I'll just say that if I was a post player that saw 2, 5* Frosh arrive and keep me on the bench, then I might start looking for PT elsewhere. Also, while I think that both TJD and Brooks are very worthy of their 5* ratings, they do not project as 1 & done like Romeo. I think that both of them will stay at IU for at least 2 years.

Therefore, I could see an extra scholly available for 2020 and in that scenario, I think that Leal gets an offer. 2021 is shaping up to be a huge year and there will be plenty of ships available. The crunch really is for 2020.

Also, to whomever asked earlier about Leal as a shooter, he's a really good shooter. He had a game over the break against Shelbyville where he hit like 8 3's. I'm not sure he's at Hulls' level, but he's also much bigger and more athletic.

I highly doubt we get to 2021 without a few transfers or players who enter the draft. I like Leal, but he isn't nearly the shooter that Hulls is/was, and a shooter is what we have lacked in the Archie era.

Two sophomores who are lighting it up right now are Luke Brown and Jalen Blackmon. Brown doesn't play the best competition, but he is the focal point of defenses and will be among the all time leaders in points in Indiana HS history. He's also shooting 59/60 on free throws with great shooting form, so it's hard for me to believe that he isn't a D1 prospect. Even if he's just a Matt Roth, that's still something we need. Blackmon is also scoring almost 30 ppg and has obvious IU ties. One of these kids is going to be worth a shot.

Yes.....I was going to make Wittman or Will S. or Luke Recker comparisons.....now that does NOT mean that this kid is as good now as we remember those guys being.....but I see similarities.....

You know any shooting %s for Leal?

Is Brown like Boyd? Better pick him up at half court or he’s shooting it in your eye?

I'd put the full court press on for Furst.
He already has a 12 -15 ft jumper.
It could easily expand to the three line..I like what I saw out of him..
He's ahead of Cody as a sophomore in high school.imo. Brooks is no more than a two year player .TJD Idk yet.
I like the list we have.If we have to go outside the state. So be it.We just need to string together classes like last year.If not better.
In Archie We Trust ~

I can't seem to find any stats to back it up, I'm only going off scouting reports and video. That's not to say he's a bad shooter, I think he can be a pretty good all around player with his length, but he's just not a pure shooter from what I've seen.

I played against Boyd, and they're comparable, but I really believe Brown has a chance to be better. First of all, he's listed at 6'1" and hopefully growing while Boyd was only 5'10"-5"11". Brown is also a much better passer. He's averaging almost 8 assists, which shows that he knows how to pass out of a double team and find the open man. Sure, it'll be a lot harder against much bigger players, but it's still encouraging.

Brown is only a soph and leading the state in scoring by a wide margin with over 38 ppg shooting 52% from the field. I don't care who you're playing against, that's impressive, especially when every team is keyed in on not letting you put up 40 on them.

Right now I would go with Jalen from what I've seen on video. Of course things could change if Brown takes a huge leap forward.

Wasn't it you that was stating the amount of players got that were 5 star when people were questioning his recruiting and what he left for Archie?
I don’t know what you mean. Archie didn’t inherit any 5 stars. Plenty of 4 stars but no 5s.

I couldn't find any either.......strange for a school the size of B. South.

So I saw Leal last night against Btown North.
So this is a one game look.
I wouldn't offer if I was Archie.
Nice stroke. But not close to a Hull's when you thought .That's in every time it left his hands. So then is he a elite athlete..No..Would he project out even next year. To be as good as say Franklin .No.. Again this is just seeing him one time..And my opinion. Which means crap to all coaching staff's.
Go Hoosiers !

I would love to get a 6'11-7ft center to play alongside TJD. Nothing against DD, hes had many battles to get through, I'm thinking more of a deerlike guy a la Zeller.

That’s a pretty rare combo. I would just rather get another guy like TJD as Archie like guys like him also.

I would be elated if we found someone in 2020 like that. It looks like the state of Indiana high school hoops is down in that year and we are looking nationally. Someone like Zach Loveday could be a great get.
