Kicker commit

I don't see that Chris Freeman has landed anywhere. I hope for him he didn't screw up by not staying. I would've been fine with him coming back. McCormick's stats look OK though. I'll trust the staff for getting the best guy.

Maybe he is one of those that C3 talked about. One that bought into the negative, therefore he didn't want him back.

Or, maybe not.

Can't tar a guy on 'attitude' or work ethic or anything, just because coach picked a different kicker, if in fact Chris even wanted to return. (Well, I can't, I have no info on any of the guys.)

I thought Chris was a good Hoosier. I know nothing beyond the fact of he played a couple years and when he won the FG and extra point job he kicked pretty well.

So what happens with all the guys in the portal who don’t find a new home?

It sure seems if you don’t have something in the bag already, you have up as scholarship for no reason
Unless you absolutely wanted out from IU, they should have at least waited until they got a feel for the coach and assistants. They could have held onto their spot until they made a decision. Or see what teams had true interest in their ability.

I think IU will keep them on scholarship, per the 'Student Bill of Rights'.

And I don't think entering the Portal means you're automatically taken off the team or scholarship.

I think, if only based on CCC’s press conference, you are off the team when you enter the portal. You can be invited back but you are not guaranteed a roster spot to return to. (Edit: based on CCC’s press conference there are players that have requested to return but he is not taking them back)

Cig has managed to put a highly experienced roster together.
It does seem like that. But we probably need at least 44 starters, two deep at every position. Then and kicker, punter, long snapper and we are pushing 50 guys. Some of the second team should play special teams but we may need a few specialists there as well.

I can see this from both sides. But I think the bottom line is, with NIL, the college game is now a “cards on top of the table business” and not being reoffered is just part of business.

Don't we have a high rated kicker on the roster that redshirted last year, Radicic?
Yeah he was top five out of high school depending on who you believe. Good punter too according to kicking camp reviews, which all rated him highly as p5 college potential as a fg kicker.

Coach wouldn't know much about him yet though. One game played, one 21 yard FG and 2 extra points, is the stat line. 100% in his career though. :)

I don't think that's how it works.

They chose to leave, so they don't have a scholarship here anymore.

Your correct that they aren't automatically off the team if they enter the portal, but it's totally up to Cig whether he would want that player back or not.

Can the "Student Bill of Rights" be terminated ?

It's my understanding that unless Cignetti decides to renew their scholarship, they're gone... Falls under: "be careful what you wish for..." Not all "screw this s--t I'm entering the Portal", snap decisions are good decisions...

This could get legalistic, but does entering the portal constitute voluntarily leaving the program? If it does, then I can see that the Student Bill of Rights wouldn't apply. But if it doesn't, and he's involuntarily dropped from the program, and the player decides he want to continue his education at IU, then I think it would. Would probably require a player taking it to court to find out.

Once they enter are they essentially free agents?

That is the way I always interpreted the scenario. If the original team has to re-recruit….then I don’t see how they BOR would pertain

Are we sure the Bill of Rights is still in effect? I thought possibly since it was started by Glass it disappeared when he left.

The Student Bill of Rights wouldn't address the portal. I'd say unless something has been added, the coach would determine if the player is brought back. The coach shouldn't be held captive by waiting for the player to determine where they are going.

Coach Cig seems like a guy that would look at performance and attitude and not hesitate to let a kid move on. I'm glad we can start fresh with our no heart OL and only try to bring back those we want.

I'd be interested in knowing just how many athletes have taken advantage of the SBoR.

And yeah, I wouldn't have much sympathy for a kid who entered the portal (even in a fit of pique). It was intended for those who had a career ending injury or who were otherwise involuntarily separated (i.e. cut) from the team.

Yeah, they are basically saying I'm giving up my spot and looking for a new team.

That doesn't mean he's going leave, but that would mean an agreement between Cig and the player both decided the player could come back.

If the player is basically creaned and wanted to continue his education at IU and stop playing ball, he would have a academic scholarship here to finish school.

I agree, and the Student Bill of Rights was implemented before NIL. So, maybe players can be cut if they enter the Portal.

IMO, they should be cut, but the way athletes are pampered now, it might permanently hurt their feelings....
