I’m watching the Houston vs Iowa State game and I know Iowa State has 2 of their best players out today. But just listening to the TV announcers and the praise they’re putting on Kevin Sampson on how you turned around Houston the last seven years were they been in the Suite 16 or final four I just think he was at INDIANA until we fired him over a phone call that now is legal to call. What coda should’ve been he had us at #5 in the country at the time of his firing and we went with who Docige, then Archie now Wooden. What could have Been ??

It’s one of the enigmas that have come to define our basketball program. Larry Bird getting homesick while on IU’s campus is another one. He hitchhiked home on HW 37 S.

It's funny, on College Ganeday this morning, Jay Bilas was speaking about how tough Sampson's defenses are wherever he goes, "Montana Tech, Washington State, Oklahoma and now at Houston."
Why do they always sugarcoat it? Dude has a HUGE blemish on his career and yet, he gets a pass. They interviewed him as well and not a single word about anything other than Houston's success. Which makes sense, but if Beard was our coach, all they would talk about is his DV charge (that was dropped), WHY!!!???

Sampson got caught and lied about it. He promised what happened at OKLA wouldn’t happen at IND. And it did. It would have gotten worse (lying about the phone calls was worse than the phone calls themselves).
He got a five-year show cause after getting fired by Indiana. That alone suggests that there was more trouble ahead if Sampson was kept, and Indiana would’ve been hit hard by sanctions.
Frankly, I’m still not convinced he’s squeaky clean at HOU, but IND should’ve never touched him.
Rick Greenspan wanted to hire John Beilein but couldn’t afford the measly $1 million buyout. IU basketball wasn’t always well resourced.
A buddy of mine from Washington Indiana was living in Oklahoma and he told me ks was shady
Did he get caught? I thought IU turned him in themselves, the nosy intern and all that. Because we’re chumps like that. I’m not unconvinced that nothing would have ever happened had IU behaved like every other school.
But I’m just going on my recollection of how it went down.
Well, yeah, he got caught by somebody. Point is when pressed on it he lied about what happened.
Am I misremembering... wasn't Sampson effectively banned from the NCAA with a five-year show cause?
He’s not squeaky clean. Houston is a great place for him.
Will Wade got a 2-year show cause which I think expires this year. Somehow he's still working.
Yep—started as an advisor for the Spurs, got hired by the Bucks then by the Rockets, which paved the way for being hired by the Coogs.

Hell of a coach but the kind people he brings in to play don't qualify for me.
He ruined the IU basketball program. Hes the reason we are on a coach merry-go-round. IU asked for it by hiring him and he proved to be just what the program did not need. Hence, he we are and have been ever since.
Couple of calls…OR was on probation when hired , repeatedly violated that, lied to IU about, turned his head to drug use and failing grades, was given a Show Clause by the NCAA. Let’s turn our heads and pretend it was a couple of calls. SMH.
