With the Fentanyl posioning now the leading cause of death, does it really make sense to let schedule 1 classification lapse? (Yes Fentanyl… not COVID, not car crashes, not heart disease is the leading cause of death … among the young).

Perhaps with Fenanyl poisoning being treated as manslaughter… the schedule I issue is moot.

I first recall hearing about Fentanyl upon Michael Jackson’s overdose.

Prince died of a fentanyl overdose, not M Jackson.

Michael Jackson died of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication.

Of course it need to stay schedule 1.

killing a person is illegal, and punishable by law.

stealing $50,000 is illegal, and punishable by law.

but killing 50,000 or a million people effectively isn't punishable by law, nor is stealing over $100 billion.

why is another debate. i'm just giving the truth here, and not dealing with the "why".

that said, fentanyl does have legit medical use.

that said, MJ has never had an OD or even hurt a soul in a century of widespread use by millions and millions, including millions who have used it daily for 50 plus yrs, and has widespread medical benefits, and arguable many social benefits as well.

yet it's a schedule 1 drug as well.

perhaps what we really need is a total revamping of our drug schedules, and actual truth based drug education.

when the govt lies it's ass off about important stuff all the time, then when we really need the govt to be believed over important stuff, it isn't for the reason that it lies it's ass off all the time, even on important stuff.

moving our non medical national drug use toward MJ as much as possible, and away from hard drugs, booze, and tobacco, should be our national number 1 goal on drugs.

but then what's in the public's best interest, and what our law makers and regulators are paid the most to do, are two different things, and our law makers and regulators, both state and national, are always going to do what's in their best interests, no matter how many lives it costs.

Trump nation didn't come about because Trump followers know or even think he has their best interests at heart.

it's just they know for absolute fact who doesn't have their best interests at heart, after 40 plus yrs of being shown so every day, and doubled down on on national tv in the 2008 bailout by both parties including Obama, of the millionaire and billionaire flat out crooks who caused the meltdown in the 1st place, while giving nothing but the middle finger to those who were it's victims, and Trump was what's left.

Trump represents "none of the above" to his legion.

he's the unknown quantity to them, when the known quantities on both sides are already known for fact by them to be the lying scum they are.

Fentanyl is a schedule II.
Have dispensed Duragesic for years.
Correct, my bad. Schedule 1 is reserved for substances with no legit medical use, and fentanyl is useful in the short term in hospital settings and especially useful transdermally, where its release is slow and steady.

The proposal is to put fentanyl analogs and similar synthetic compounds on Schedule 1 - not fentanyl itself. This would not in any way affect the legitimate medical uses of fentanyl.

Fentanyl has medicinal purposes such as chronic pain and cancer pain. Schedule I is typically where illegal narcotics reside.
