Just saw this article...

Thanks for posting the article. I’m trying to understand the NCAA’s position…. Are the arguing since they are paying players, scholarships are not a part of the process anymore because it adds additional”Operating Expenses “ to the Universities?

Why not agree to the Grandfather clause? That seemed very reasonable…

The article is correct in stating the NCAA/Universities have only themselves to blame. Over 50 years of unfettered abuse/control over athletes has its price which in my opinion, hasn’t come close to being punished for…. But that’s me. It just proves that regardless of who or what has the power, it will corrupt. Left, right, company, or education. No one is immune from it.

If they lose their roster spot why can't they go elsewhere?

I don’t think anything stops them from going anywhere. I just don’t understand why being grandfathered in is such an issue. I mean, how many per team are we talking? My assumption is it is few per team… I can be wrong….

The reason for the change is the position of the NCAA was untenable anymore and change was required. Since a change in position was necessitated by the treatment/rules of the NCAA, to right the wrong and not hurt any of those that have been taken advantage of, being grandfathered makes perfect sense to me. But I truly don’t know the reasons why NCAA doesn’t want it…

I thought about posting this as a separate thread.
The softball pitcher for Texas Tech (made it to the final game against Texas, don’t know who won) was given $ 1,000,000 (1 M ) to transfer to Texas Tech.
I do not know what to make of this.

This is what you call a free market. There is nothing bad except for people dont like when someone else changes teams.

Its a change from the authoritarian grip the NCAA held before they were taken over by the judicial system. This happens with regularity in professional sports. When there's this much money involved, this is bound to happen.

We need to get a players association and allow for collective bargaining. If you can get contractual agreements that legally bind that players rights to the program, you eliminate the transfer chaos, unless the deal is a short term one....or has buy-outs...whatever is agreed to.

it’s easy to see why NCAA wouldn’t want that…

Is there a rule against signing them to a multi-year commitment?
This is what I think I would do. Have a 2-4 year contract that allows me to keep a player if I want but cut him if he under performs. But, the player who over performs will then be a hold out until he receives a reworked contract.
Essentially the NFL.
Is it now time to just have the college football teams become the NFL and CFL minor leagues? Make attending the university totally optional?
I used to think this answer was yes, but football is such a huge part of the dollar pie I think the schools will do anything to stall/prevent this.

Sign them to a contract and make them an employee of the University. Is there a doubt anymore what these players mean revenue wise to the University? If they don’t want that then they are basically trying to make the 1099 employees… if they make them employees they have more control and say over them I would think.

I have no criticism of the girl taking a million dollars to transfer. I would have as well.
My comment was simple a surprise at it being softball - a non revenue positive sport.
With the seeming ease of streaming, I wonder if it is possible for each school to stream literally all of their schools sport events. We sort of have that with big ten plus, but this would be each school having their own “IU +”.

All you need is an oil/cattle Barron who like women sports.

Yeah, Texas Tech has been known to have thrown a TON of NIL money at their sports this year. As in, more than any other program in the country. They saw the legislation coming down that's going to cap things and their donors decided to go all in this year while its the wild wild west.

Basically, this won't be the norm.

I miss the days when players just wanted to play ball for good old Ivy.
