JT Toppin Texas Tech NIL

he's close to a 20ppg/10rpg player so huge contributor. But that's a lot of cash for a 19 yr old.

For many yrs Vitale was always whining how it wasn't fair the players couldn't earn any money. I think he was thinking more along the lines of working at Subway for min wage. Hope Dookie V is happy. The jeannie is out of the bottle now.

Launching NIL and the portal/instant transfer at the same time was a huge mistake. IMHO.

Can’t imagine playing on the same college team with a guy making that kind of money, when I’m slotted at $100k. Talk about creating chemistry issues.

If the 100k guy gets to the NBA then he likely winds up on a team with players making 60 or 70 mil. It will be a good learning experience.

I think Toppin was a 2nd team all American. So I assume a first team all American would be paid 4-5 million NIL?

As I recall, Vitale was pushing the idea of "stipends" (not sure if he used that word) but essentially some form of revenue share so the players could get some bit of the money they brought in for the schools. He was talking about this 20 years ago. I'm not sure even he could have imagined that one kid might end up getting millions. Coaches didn't even make that much back then (and many don't even today).

I think you are confusing Barbara Eden and Aladdin lol

he for sure wasn't thinking 7 digits. He also didn't know the future impact of the instant transfer portal and hired guns chasing bags of cash.

and if he doesn't??? A lot of these kids are grabbing bags in case they don't make NBA. Only so many slots in NBA. A lot of kids don't want to go overseas to play. So get money now. That's why we are seeing overpricing by agents now. The ones who are marginal at best for NBA future grabbing as much pie as they can scarf down.

At some point this all has to implode. I get an nba owner losing money overpaying players as his franchise value is going up at an absurd rate. But the NIL booster gets no such return. And as an alum how long till I stop caring how my school's $10M roster of "student-athletes" competes against the one in another part of the state of country? I have as little connection to that team as I do to an nba team. At least the nba team has multi-year contracts. And how long till the "little" schools bow out of the madness? If they can find a couple needle in the haystack stars and a decent coach, they'll lose them the next year.

Again why either bother going to the NBA you can make more in college( nba 2.0).
I think you probably know the reasons...

But here are some...

1. First round NBA contracts come with 3 years guaranteed. Nothing in NIL is contractually guaranteed, seemingly.
2. Once that first contract is signed, the clock is ticking for their first negotiated contract. THAT is what will continue to bring guys out like Cooper Flagg, all the one and done's, etc... Because NIL won't ever approach what a decent starter level player in the NBA will get with their first negotiated contract. So while Flagg might be able to make a little more playing at Duke for a couple years, every year he waits, pushes back his 20,30,40+ million per year contract another year.
3. You do have to be academically eligible to play, and receive NIL money in the NCAA. Some schools that might not mean anything, grades can be given some places, I'm sure. But "most" still require the players to go to class and do the work.
4. There are heavy restrictions on practice times, even individual workout times, in college...no such limitations in the NBA.
5. The endorsement opportunities are just as large, if not larger, in the NBA. And that would be ON TOP of their salary, instead of comprising all their "salary".

For guys like Braden Smith...that are very borderline to get an NBA contract in the first place, let alone get the bigger negotiated one in a few years... sure, NIL is a better choice. Cooper Flagg, AJ Dabyansta...no way.

Because 1st round NBA contracts are multi-year guarantees, there's an actual players union, and chances at endorsement money increase exponentially at that level. Plus most kids dream about playing in the NBA. Kids who are mocked in the first round are still going to leave at the usual time.

Cooper Flagg's endorsement deal(s) is going to be 2-3x his rookie year salary, if not more.

But will it once you have opened pandora's box it always hard to put her back in. Once they get a taste for these massive paydays they are not turning back. Lots of these boosters are worth hundreds of millions of dollars so I am not sure they will have an off switch. I mean I think TJD's senior year was the first year of NIL really and he got like 250k I think. Three years later he would get 10 times that amount.

And quicker to second contract.

No matter how much you think it sucks for the sport, right is right.
There's no way that you can say & believe that this is right. The well will run dry at the rate that it's going now. At least the owners in pro sports collect ticket sales on their investment.

Dude, it’s fair market or they wouldn’t be paying it.
