Sad 😞the ucla game was one of 1st college games I remember watching.
sometimes it seems like you stay away from this site for a few days at a time, those are good daysSad 😞
Ah.... it was Meatchicken.Sad to hear. Got to see Shumate play. I was in the stands to see the 1974 Mideast Regional at the Human Center in Terre Haute. Third row from the floor, center court. Marquette vs Ohio/Notre Dame vs Austin Peay. A lot of talent in the building. ND's John Shumate, Gary Brokaw, Gary Novak, Adrian Dantley, Dwight Clay, Bill Paterno. Marquette's Bo Ellis, Maurice Lucas, Earl Tatum, Marcus Washington, Lloyd Walton. And of course, Austin Peay's James "Fly" Williams. Very lopsided wins for the Warriors and the Domers. Couldn't remember a couple of players and had to use Google (Bill Paterno and Lloyd Walton) and I believe ND lost to a BIG 10 team, but can't remember which one. I'll "cheat," again. Sad news of Shumate's passing.
I remember that. Dantley was a helluva player. Those were some enjoyable years of watching college basketball with RMK, Digger and Al McGuire leading their teams. Seemed like IU, ND and Marquette were always on tv. And I liked it🙂They beat IU in AH 73-74 season. Dantley was a freshman.
Yeah, while I was young, I remember them snapping a UCLA winning streak that seemed like it would never end. It was quite a game.the ucla game was one of 1st college games I remember watching.
That was Austin Carr days wasn’t it?Yeah, while I was young, I remember them snapping a UCLA winning streak that seemed like it would never end. It was quite a game.

No, austin was earlier. That was Austin Carr days wasn’t it?
That’s right. They ended two UCLA win streaks. First with Austin Carr in 71 (48 games) and then the next time UCLA was beat was after 88 games and again beaten by ND.No, austin was earlier.
Shumate, Gary Brokaw, Dwight Clay, and a young Adrian Dantley
UCLA was up 70-59 and ND ended the game with a 12-0 run to win 71-70. Shumate with a monster game, 24 pts & 11 rebounds vs. Bill Walton. I was 11. Watched it to the end and it made me late for a piano lesson.
You were very lucky to see it.No, austin was earlier.

Like many in Indiana I grew up first watching high school games. I was amazed by George McGinnis in the state finals (1969?) and again in the all-star series vs. Kentucky when he had 50-something points and 30-something rebounds. When George committed to IU, I decided to watch college games. In those days you'd catch only one or two games on Saturday. Living halfway between Louisville and Indy, I could watch SEC games from Louisville (Pete Maravich!), or Big Ten games from Indy. I got hooked fast. You were very lucky to see it.
So did I, except in my case it was against the football players and coaches. Those outdoor bball courts were the best pickup game courts in northern Indiana.Living in South Bend, my friends and I used to go to ND and play either on the outdoor courts near Stephan Center or on the auxiliary courts in the ACC.
Around 1978-80, we got into the PIT in the ACC and played in some pickup games and Shumate was there playing also!
Great guy, quiet, didn’t act like a jerk being an NBA player
Great years. Judd Heathcote, Lou Henson, Larry Bird at Indiana State, Typhoid fever. Somebody should air some reruns.I remember that. Dantley was a helluva player. I read McGinnis’ dad thought he was wasting his time playing basketball (poppa was working two jobs) until the all star game in Louisville and then said something like ny goodness you are good.Like many in Indiana I grew up first watching high school games. And I forgot how good Ray Meyer's DePaul teams were back then. Dick Vital coached the Detroit Titans during that period, too. He had some good years up there, if I recall.Great years. Judd Heathcote, Lou Henson, Larry Bird at Indiana State, Typhoid fever. Somebody should air some reruns.
I liked Heathcote-nothing suave or polished but a bared teeth competitor.Great years. Judd Heathcote, Lou Henson, Larry Bird at Indiana State, Typhoid fever. Somebody should air some reruns.
I think it was announcer Joe Dean who I enjoyed hearing who would say "Austin Caaaah. In the air...in the bucket." 🤣 That was a great decade of college basketball. No, austin was earlier.

DePaul ISU in the final four was a fantastic game. Bird went 13/19 from the fieldAnd I forgot how good Ray Meyer's DePaul teams were back then. Dick Vital coached the Detroit Titans during that period, too. He had some good years up there, if I recall.
I called the athletic department at ISU one time and asked a guy there if they had Bird game tape. They had a boatload of tape but never worked out a deal with them.I think it was announcer Joe Dean who I enjoyed hearing who would say "Austin Caaaah. In the air...in the bucket." 🤣 That was a great decade of college basketball.
Yes, it was! Both teams just matching shot for shot.DePaul ISU in the final four was a fantastic game. Bird went 13/19 from the field
I knew a guy that was working on his masters at ISU and was a trainer or grad assistant or something with the basketball team. During Bird’s off year after transfer he told me there was a player eligible the next season that would knock my socks off. I thought-yeah I’ve heard this story before and then I lost my socks.Yes, it was! Both teams just matching shot for shot.
The Billy Packer games at ISU were absolute classics after he said ISU and Bird were overrated and would be outclassed in the tourney.. Lucky he wasn’t lynched.Yes, it was! Both teams just matching shot for shot.
string music, great announcer primarily sec thoughI think it was announcer Joe Dean who I enjoyed hearing who would say "Austin Caaaah. In the air...in the bucket." 🤣 That was a great decade of college basketball.
True story, the baskets that were in use at ND at the time (for the 88 game streak) are still in use at SB Trinity's home court!!That’s right. They ended two UCLA win streaks. First with Austin Carr in 71 (48 games) and then the next time UCLA was beat was after 88 games and again beaten by ND.

Ya know when McGinnis and Downing were seniors East Chicago Washington freshman team would have been one of the best varsity teams in the state. That was the team that had Bridgeman, Trgovich, and Stoddard. They always played on super speed. Incredible that Trgovich and Bridgeman met as opponents in the NCAA championship game.Like many in Indiana I grew up first watching high school games. As you go back in time fewer and fewer games available. I have tried several times to find any Jimmy Rayl video and struck out. I also haven’t been able to locate Maravich LSU video.all kinds of stuff on you tube including full games
