Is this from his senior season or something new during summer workouts?
Anybody have any info?

He had a really bad knee injury junior year of HS, that kept him out all the way through most of his senior year. And he's still not fully recovered.

The really, really bad ones can take a LONG time to come back from. I hope he can get back to 100%, I just have a feeling about him...that he's going to end up being a great player for us.

Glen Grunwald is a skeptic of this message.

On TOS, sounds like he had a setback prior to arriving to campus. Indiana trainers obviously in charge now. Taking it very slow. No contact drills yet.

Reading the tea leaves, I think anything we get from Jakai this year will be gravy. This sounds like a serious injury with a long road to being 100%.

Redshirt him we still have a spot to add a quality guard.
In today's world, not sure Redshirts really mean much.

What I would do, is not play him at all, until he's 100% healthy, AND has been practicing full contact for an extended time. And THEN, if that ends up lasting all year, then he'd get his medical redshirt anyways.

In the end, its up to Woody and Jakai, obviously. What I'd stay away from is pushing him back to play before he's obviously healthy and ready. Even if it ends up that we need him, for whatever reason.

Microfracture knee issue. Re aggravated when he came back for the end of his senior year. Be thankful he’s getting the best care now that he’s at IU.

I never had the idea he was going to play much this year either way based on who’s ahead of him. But, you can always use guards so who knows. He should make a full recovery but it may take some time.

Or to the younger folks, Maurice Creek!
GG made me nuts the way he played BEFORE he got hurt. Then he was even worse afterwards. Creek was a different story for me. He showed he was a helluva player before having horrible injuries. Made me sick when he crumpled.

Certainly hope Newton doesn’t end up like either of them.

that was the injury from HS, or this is new since he's been on campus?
In the interview it sounded like an extension of his HS injury but that it was either reaggravated or unresolved. While they can be annoying, listen to the Hoosier Hysterics podcast. If you want to hear about it skip to 31:07 and listen Jakai explains it himself. That will also jump you past the shenanigans.

Again, I repeat, he had the injury in high school. He sat out to heal the injury in high school. He came back at the end of his high school season and re-aggravated the same microfracture injury to his knee in one of his final high school games. He is now rehabbing this same injury while on IUs campus.

Sounds like he had shitty medical people involved. Hope he fully recovers.

Maybe that is why they had a guard in this week.

I heard 2 hand that Jordan Rayford, a DMV kid in the portal from Air Force Academy was spotted at dinner with the coaches.

ODU, Maine & Air Force.......yikes
He's not a grad transfer, wonder how this one works out?

If it is true, and does happen, I would guess he's an under the radar kid, and Woody knows that. I can't fathom him reaching on someone with all the irons he has in the 2024 fire, and with Cupps, Gunn, Newton, Banks, etc... already in the mix.

His highlights make him look decent. But...he went to Air Force, and the competition on the highlights didn't look great. But maybe he's 6-6, 220 now, instead of the 6-5, 195 he was entering college?

Hate to hear these stories about high school athletes getting linked up with bad doctors before they get to campus.

Our niece was in line to get a soccer scholarship and tore her ACL. Fingers crossed it repaired correctly. No one involved wanted our input so 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, that extra inch would be huge for IU. 6'5, no thank you. 6'6, hell yeah!!!

You could have just gone with the 25lb heavier part. That is a meaningful difference.
Ehhh...growing an inch AND gaining weight is a much better representation of someone maturing physically. Just gaining 25lbs could be construed as him getting fat from his injury.

I'm good with what I used...and again, its a hypothetical aimed at providing a possible explanation on why Woody is talking with someone like him. He might have lost weight for all we know?

Further...an inch of height, when combined with added weight, is a significant difference in basketball.

Yeah, that inch of growth makes one fully understand that the 25lbs definitely wasn't him getting fat from injury. SMH

Intersting nit to pick. Hope you have better things to worry about today. And if you're actually slapping your head...I feel sorry for you.

The overall point, I thought, was pretty obvious. Maybe he's bigger and stronger than he was in his HS highlights?

The overall point was not well thought out. And that's not what SMH means.

Cool. And you're right, shaking your head is less worrisome, apologies.

Not sure if you saying my point was well thought out or not is worth any consideration, coming from you? Or the energy it'd take to shake my head about it? But I guess its worth enough for me to respond. So kudos to that!

But for visual effect. Look at some pictures of Jakai Newton and/or Xavier Johnson standing next to Gabe Cupps. And then tell me the weight AND inch doesn't make a difference.

Its really not worth arguing over, but you're wrong on this one.
