I will be zero surprised if he leaves (it would be more surprising if he stayed in Bloomington for a fourth year)

Schools have nothing to do with this anymore. It’s not pro sports using a college name. In pro sports there are rules and guardrails.
I said it before:
Get rid of the name of the school on the uniform. Each player should have a jersey that looks like it’s from NASCAR. Each patch should vary in size for the percentage of ownership that the sponsor has in that player.

I am all for second chances. For instance Coach Hart who used to be at Linton/Stockton was fired for drinking and driving. He is now the coach at Cloverdale. I would say Beard should get another shot. He paid a big price for doing what he did. He lost his dream job at Texas.
He's the Head Coach at Ole Miss making $5M per year. Regardless if he gets the IU job, he got a second chance/another shot already.

Reneau is not terrible, he plays for a terrible coach. Terrible players do not score 1000 points in less than 3 years in the Big 10.
He would be a big loss, the new coach should throw the NIL bank at him as he would be a great cornerstone to work around next year. Goode is another, if granted another year he has to be a Hoosier.
If I'm the new coach...I have in depth meetings with all the current players...within a day or two of being announced the head coach. I have my "people" put together "lowlight" tapes of the things they've shown that wouldn't jive with my program. And then some "highlight" tapes of how to play the right way, or how I'd want them to play. Those would include players from my own teams in the past, players they've played against, AND most importantly, the moments when they did do those things correctly themselves.
I would tell them that if they decide they want to come back to IU...as soon as they make that decision, I'm going to be on them basically every single day to become a version of those good highlights, and to be that way all day, every day. Through that whole process the new coach would lose some guys probably...which is fine, the guys you lose from that approach aren't guys you want anyways. It would also give the new coach a pretty decent vibe of how they'd handle and react to being coached hard, and maybe the new coach would decide a couple more aren't guys he wants. I would guess though they'd realize there are a couple they'd love to have come back, and that 1 or 2 would be more than open to their approach.
I don't think any of us have any clue where our current players would fall in all this.
Biggest issue with reneau is being a tweener. Not a good enough post presence to be a 5 and not fast enough to be a 4. So stuck with a 2 post lineup that doesn't always work very well.
He's good enough to be a 5...if the overall system allows for it. He'd need some versatile length on the wings to help with rebounding and defending quality bigs.
We've seen him thrive as a 5, very recently. Up until this last game, playing him beside Ballo was a predictable disaster. It wasn't disastrous against Oregon, but we certainly didn't have any great moments where we went on good runs with it. Its very possible that was one of the things that kept us from pushing leads. Until the very end of the game, Oregon wasn't playing overly well.
Is Newton even real? Right now I'd classify him with leprechauns, yetis, and the Easter Bunny.
There's lots of players that score 1,000 points and you definitely have to have good talent to do that. But Reneau doesn't = wins. But you raise a good point - one that perpetually bad teams always have: Is it the players? The coaches? The systems? Etc. But a Reneau that is held to account for his defense, not moving the ball, throwing up shots so bad you couldn't even articulate them before you saw them? Maybe.
Ha ha. For sure. Only those soft foam bricks. I was thinking the mood with all this would be much more constructive and cooperative, than negative and scolding in nature. Maybe I should have added saying something like..."you're obviously talented, but if you're not on board with becoming THAT player, and the work it will take to get there. Then you should look for a different school.... And, I know a lot of coaches, I will help you however I can finding a great next school."
But obviously some kids probably wouldn't like being "embarrassed" with lowlights from a guy they've just met.
Its such a bummer. He came in those exhibition games and in one of them immediately made a play taking it to the basket that we haven't seen out of any of our guards/wing players in years.
No clue if he'll ever get healthy, but I'm about as certain on him becoming a very good P4 college player as I could be without ever seeing him play at this level.
This is people management 101. Open with the critique. Close with a compliment. They remember you being tough but fair.
Maybe it's true but I also heard he is trying to get the Boozer twins too that's three bigs good luck with that? Reneau is a good kid but lacks athleticism gets his shot blocked alot.
Reneau has solid footwork and around the rim he is decent with both hands. He needs/needed coaching the past 3 years and he needed a system that gave him a chance to showcase his skills. IU wanted him to be a 4 and in reality he is more suited for the 5.
TJD and Ware didn't help with Reneau's growth either, but that is not their fault he was just caught up in the mix.
I believe he already has the Boozer twins. Could be mistaken on that. If not, its a foregone conclusion. They'll also possibly have a couple of this year's freshmen back.
Watch Drake's pick and roll offense. Malik would average 20ppg in that offense probably, as their 5 man. The only question would be could McCollum get Malik to kick to opposite wings more when closely guarded...and then would he be willing to play defense how McCollum's teams play.
The guy they use now, Banks, is smaller, less skilled, and less refined around the basket than Malik. And he does very well in it.
It would also help Bennett Stirtz too, as other teams couldn't hard hedge on him as much as they do, and/or trap and double him coming off those screens. Malik would have a field day, and I'm sure Stirtz would be more than willing to get him the ball regularly.
I tried the same approach with Lucy on becoming a valued poster, was hopeful it would just leave, but the opposite happened it stayed and got worse.
There is that possibility. The new coach has the ability to make that decision for the player though. I would hope the coach doesn't approach any of this as "trying to get someone to quit"... if he's thinking along those lines, I would hope he has the stones to just tell them they need to find another school.
he wants to be a 4, sees that has his future in the pros. basically the last 2 seasons we have accommodated him trying to do that. part of the reason our seasons have got off to horrendous starts against good competition. he's an above average low post scorer unless he's going against much stronger and taller players. I would want him back, but he's going to Miami
won't be an issue, there's going to be a mass exodus. most already have landing spots.
