IU WBB Great Q4 pushes IU past Illini

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=491045

Holmes 13 q4 points power Hoosier past a gritty Illini squad.
First game I've watched of our ladies this year. Eeesshhh... too much talent to play like they did. Moore-McNeil had a decent scoring day, but I thought she was pretty awful running the offense and passing the ball. Seemed focused on where she wanted to go with the ball regardless of what was happening around her. Constantly passing in to double teams, and not looking to push the ball at all.

I was impressed by extending the lead in 4Q down the stretch. Mac had the hot hand … and beat a number of those double teams. If Moren wanted something else, I’m sure she would have said so.

Mac is/was terrific, but I just thought they were winning in spite of their PG not because of her. It's unfair, because I've not watched enough to even have an opinion, but I think I'd try Scalia more at PG and CMM off guard. She can drive, and score at 3 levels, but her passing decisions I thought were very limiting today, and while she had a tough cover, the IL guard was getting by her at will.

I disagree regarding Chloe playing poorly.
We were not getting threes from Syd, Sara, or Yardon and she took one to try and break thru a team shooting slump. She hit it and I thought it really helped us. Without the usual points from Sara and Syd she then started concentrating on trying to score. She did that with drives and trying to draw fouls. I haven’t heard Morten’s pressor yet to get her take.
It was Mac who helped us at crunch time. She hit her first 8 free throws and kept us even. She took some very different shots tonight. Different spot on the floor, different release point, but they went in.

No. Absolutely not

Why was that? That's part of my critique: I thought she was overdribbling and not getting the ball to folks when they needed it.She scored great, but I just didn't think was making the offense as effective as it should have been with the talent on the floor. Just looked and she had 4 TOs, but also so did Scalia so she may not be the answer either. Probably just an off game with the holidays, but I thought they'd look better than they did. Always a sign of a good team when you win and aren't at your sharpest.

Neither is Iowa, as their best inside player from last year is gone. We all look forward to playing Iowa.
I'm not as concerned with Iowa as I am with say, Ohio State. This year, just as last year, they have trouble with strong athletic guards driving. The McMahon girl from OSU is a handful. So us Jacey Sheldon. Their press just destroyed IU in the second half of their BTT game last year.

Everyone has an off night. oSU got beat by Michigan but I still see them as the best in the B1G at this point.

OSU ain’t that great. Especially their post. McMahon can be good but we defended her really well last year and that was when they had even more firepower from the perimeter. And I could certainly be wrong but I think Sheldon is the most overhyped player in the conference.

This has been a McNeil trait all along, but she actually made some better decisions yesterday than i have seen previously

You should watch more games to get a better feel for this team and CMM. She is no Grace, but still has over 3-1 a/to ratio.

But yesterday, like last year, we faced our biggest problem - smaller, quicker guards. Illinois also overplayed the passing lanes on the perimeter which, IMO, attributed to the over dribbling.

CMM has done well taking over for Grace overall. It's a hard act to follow. But this team does have the ability to go far this year if they tighten up the D, rebound better, and Syd can shoot better.

I, too, feel CMM over dribbles at times. She does have big shoes to fill playing PG, replacing Grace. Yesterday she had a good day on offense, but does often look hurried.

Wish Garzon would be more assertive on the offensive end. She’s so talented. Yesterday she seemed to drift.

I'd like to see more of bargasser. She looks very athletic.

The part of OSU that worries me is their press. When we are pressed, to date, we have not shown the ability to break it.
We actually ran a press a game or two ago. Moren was asked about it in the post game pressor. She said it was all about just taking 7-8 seconds off their shot clock. I thought that was a telling answer. It was not about getting turnovers or steals, just reducing the opponents shot clock

Absolutely, that's why I said that, so I do need to watch more for sure.

I've been impressed with Garzon since the first time I seen her play last year. In the IL game she had 12pts, 6 reb, & 5 assists, hard to score a lot of points when Mac scores 30 & dominates the inside. In the Evansville game Yardon had 30,puts. I don't think you can hardly call that not being assertive.

Someone mentioned she was slow footed. Watching her run I can see how someone would get that impression but I've seen several plays that she brought the ball up ours on a break & she surprised me with her speed while handling the ball. First time I seen it I had to back up the TV to make sure it was actually her.

Scalia was basically a no show and the girl from Illinois was hitting everything she threw up. But we still won.

Sarah seemed rushed. Illinois seemed to take an approach where they weren't going to let our perimeter shooters have any room. By doing that, they didn't seem to double or triple Mac as much as other teams have. They also.layed off CMM on the perimeter so.she got some wide open looks. They also let her drive to her strong side.

I think.a lit of what happened in this game was just IU taking what they were given.

All I got to see were they highlight reels but Cook for the Illini was impressive. She kept them in it single handedly.

If IU had her they'd a really tough out.

Cook is a little different from what we have. Lexi is smaller (5’9”) but fast more than quick. She also is a very weak shooter. I like Beau, hope she proves to be great.
Moren mentioned in a pressor that we “can all agree we are not athletic”. But commented we are long and need to take advantage of that.
Cook’s final stat line was 9-18 but I agree with you. It seemed like she never missed.

Sara sure did not score much. Her two free throws at crunch time sure helped. I think Moren feels she helps in other ways or would have played Beau or Henna more.
