Notre Dame is an excellent football team but this is a not a terrible draw for IU. USC, with a redshirt sophomore QB, was able to throw for 360 yards (unfortunately for USC, their QB also threw 2 pick-sixes in the final four minutes), rack up 557 total yards of offense and move the ball extremely well against the Irish. We have a good offense and are a very efficient passing team. IF our pass pro is decent (more on that later), Rourke should have a big night.

Some other factors that hopefully will make a difference:

  • We’re playing up the road and should have several thousand fans in attendance.
  • We’ve got a cold-weather game (Purdue) under our belts.
  • We’ve got a loud-environment game (Ohio State) under our belts. That one obviously didn’t turn out too well, with Ohio State able to tee off on Rourke after picking up on the indicator used in our silent count, but CCC is confident “we’ll be a lot better” the next time (South Bend) we’re in that kind of an environment. Our pass pro, good or bad, will be the key factor in this game, IMO.
  • CCC commented after the Ohio State game that there were multiple missed assignments and communication errors, and that those issues are correctable. Here’s hoping the corrections have been made.

I'll close with the obvious. I believe CCC is building an “emerging superpower,” but we’re not going to be 11-1 every year, and we’re not going to be in the CFP every year. We have an opportunity this year to make a statement, we need to strike while the iron is hot and silence the naysayers who insist we don’t belong. We must beat ND.

Go Hoosiers!

I don't think we "have" to beat them. But it is incredibly important that we make a much better showing than we did at OSU.

It's been a great year, and a win would add some extra validation -- fair or unfair we don't have a marquee (top-10) win yet.

I agree. If we were to lose to ND the “they only beat bad teams” rhetoric will be loud. And perhaps to some degree, hang over us until we do beat a few ranked teams.

"with Ohio State able to tee off on Rourke after picking up on the indicator used in our silent count".

Where did you hear this?
I hadn't heard that they knew the indicator, but they definitely figured out the timing of our silent count after the 1st drive.

Q: When you played at Columbus, crowd noise was an issue for your team. How do you learn the lessons from that, having played at Ohio State, and what really different can you do to deal with crowd noise?

CIGNETTI:
I do think, having been in that environment and coming out individually and collectively, you benefit from the notes taken. I think where it affected us most was offensively, having to go to a silent cadence the third play of the game.

Didn’t affect us the first series of the game, but once Ohio State had a chance to get their guys on the sideline, this is what they’re doing, they started to tee off on us pretty good. There are some things we can do and incorporate, which we’ve already begun to do.

Then we did some uncharacteristic things in that game. We dropped a punt snap. We had poor location on a punt that resulted in a punt return for a touchdown. Still got to get the guy on the field. We had some communication errors on pass protection, and a couple critical missed assignments.

Watch a few plays in the 2nd half. Our right guard was punching his fist when Rourke said he was ready. We would takeoff on the one count every time. Unfortunately, Ohio State knew every time when we were snapping the ball. I don’t know why we didn’t go to a two count. If I could see it their defense definitely saw it.

Maybe a dumb question - but why didn't IU make any adjustments to that? They only started moving the ball at the end when O$U quit blitzing.
I don't think it's a dumb question at all. I've never coached football, but my understanding is that there are very few options when it comes to a silent count. It's either guard/center or QB/center. And QB/center is only possible when the QB is under center (able to touch the center's ass) and not in the shotgun. If a coach could weigh in on this, that would be great.

Normal cadence is always better. Let's hope the 25,000 fewer fans in ND Stadium than in the Shoe will make a silent count mostly or completely unnecessary.

This is the big reason I wanted to get Notre Dame as we weren’t getting a home game. I don’t think they can be as loud as the other three host stadiums. I definitely did not like the previous pairing showing us going to Athens.

Opportunities come one at a time. Got to use THIS one. We may never get another shot at beating Notre Dame in their house to advance in the nation college football tournament.

Cig had it right - you start by changing the way people think about Indiana football. ND needs an attitude adjustment.

ND people still cling to their elite status from 30+ years ago. If there is another team in the country that is consistently ranked higher than they should be I don't know who it is. I think they are very good but not a top 5 team and not as good as Ohio State. Their fans and most of the country still doesn't recognize that Cigs IU ain't nothing like the IU of the past! If we play a clean mostly turnover free game, I like our chances.

Coach CIG's got me expecting to be in the playoffs every year. And he's right. I expect us to be better next year than we were this year.

Wait. I thought you didn’t care about the playoff, but only beating Purdue. 😉

We could be “better” next year and miss out on the CFP. A lot of things have to break your way, including a little bit of luck, to make a tourney when it’s a field of just 12 and only seven at-large spots.

Not to an emerging superpower.

I didn't play or coach either but it seems there has to be some way to vary the cadence. It was all too clear O$U had it figured out, and we can't be the first team to deal with that noise. He hasn't been hit like that all season

Yes. We were literally tipping our hand. Ohio State quickly figured it out. They were able to tee off on Rourke. Cignetti is obviously well aware and suggested it won’t happen again. I guess they’ve been able to make an adjustment. Was an effective in-game adjustment feasible? That I don’t know. That’s why I’ve asked for coaching input.

Finally, and as I said earlier, I’m hoping the silent count won’t be necessary next week. And excessive noise on offense shouldn’t be an issue at all on a neutral field, if we’re able to advance.
