Is anyone for Micah Beckwith?

I will vote McCormick, as will many like me, but probably not enough. I’m a Jasper resident & know Mike a little. He’s a good guy but his support of the Mid States Corridor is a dq for me. Will be a HUGE conflict of interest & he will use the Governorship to influence….
Mike has great agenda that will please Indiana Republicans and maybe some Democrats.

The Pub party bosses in Indy doing everything they can to get Mike beaten. Kind of like the old Republican elites working against Trump.

If it wasn’t for the corridor I’d be all in on Mike, but it’s a dealbreaker for me. Why are the party bosses trying to get him beaten?

His property tax proposal was a half baked idea that showed he didn’t understand how property taxes work.

He’s from the south and not part of the Indy gang. Did you see the awful primary ads ran against him?

No, I typically don’t watch or listen to anything with ads. Saw a Trump ad during the IU game yesterday, that was maybe the first of any candidate I’ve seen. There has to be more to the story than where he’s from though, right? Did they see something they did it like in Washington? Either way, it’s likely a good thing if the establishment is down on him…

I think it was nothing more than he wasn’t part of the establishment. He’s a good man.

He went to Washington thinking he could work across the isle and get things done. He found out it was hopeless.

Mike Braun’s Freedom and Opportunity Agenda Property Tax Relief Plan

Republican nominee for Governor, Mike Braun, released his Freedom and Opportunity Agenda Property Tax Relief Plan. After hitting the road and hearing from Hoosiers, Senator Braun took note of the top issues troubling our state. Number one being ever increasing property taxes due to inflation.

This is Senator Braun’s opening proposal and he looks forward to working closely with the General Assembly and stakeholders to turn this plan into workable legislation. He knows the entire tax ecosystem needs to be looked at, but this is the biggest priority for taxpayers.

Just as Governor Daniels did in 2008, Senator Braun is responding to statewide angst about skyrocketing property tax bills.

What does this mean? It means Senator Braun has a plan focused on capping property tax increases, updating deductions, increasing transparency, and reforming the referendum process.

How?
  1. Cut Homeowner Property Taxes: The intention of overhauling the homestead deduction under Sen. Braun's plan would be to have the net effect of returning the average Hoosiers' property tax levels back to 2021 levels on average.
  2. Cap Property Tax Bills: Due to inflation, home values have increased rapidly while wages have remained stagnant. By capping property tax bill increases at 2% for seniors, low-income Hoosiers, and families with children under the age of 18; and 3% for all other taxpayers, Sen. Braun's plan will ensure property taxes no longer outpace inflation.
  3. Increase Local Government Transparency: Hoosiers lack visibility into how their property taxes are calculated. Sen. Braun's plan would establish a Property Tax Transparency Portal and provide a platform for taxpayers to provide feedback and access information. Hoosiers should not be taxed in the dark.
  4. Reform the Referendum Process: The current referendum process is misleading and difficult to understand. Under Sen. Braun's plan, referendums to increase property taxes will only occur in high turnout general elections, will be subject to tax caps, will include a total levy amount, and will include data regarding the impact on the median home's property tax bill.
Property taxes have gotten out of hand due to high inflation and the non-transparent, often confusing process of assessing property taxes. Senator Braun's tax plan addresses these issues, would fix the process, and would save Hoosiers thousands of dollars.

I don’t understand the laser focus on property taxes. In Indiana, we don’t have high property taxes and have a low overall tax burden. Being the cheapest place to live is not helping a lot of Indiana counties.

We should be focusing on making Indiana a better place to live. This policy will do the opposite. It will reduce funds to schools and local governments. This means cuts to local police and fire. Public education will suffer and education is one area we need increased funding.

A deeper dive would probably reveal tremendous benefit to Mike & his family from the reduced property taxes, much like the corridor.

The Indiana Lieutenant Governor is the point person for agriculture in the Governor's office, and it also has influence with tourism. I don't know that Beckwith will help with either of these, and he might be enough a sideshow to be a major headache.

McCormick picked a serious person with experience that can do the job. There was some groaning from the Dem base, because he had some socially conservative views. However, he still got an easy majority of votes at the convention.

Braun tried to do the same, but got railroaded at the convention by true believers. Not a good omen for the future, if Braun wins.

Can you explain what the Mid States Corridor is? I haven't lived in Indiana for 5 years.

I assume it's some kind of coordination among the Midwest states?

It’s a bypass road allowing travel “around” Huntingburg & Jasper without using hwy 231 going through the middle of the towns. Going to take dozens of houses (maybe hundreds) & destroy a lot of farmland. They’re touting that it will bring jobs to the area. That sounds great, except that we already have < 3% unemployment & can’t fill manufacturing positions anyway. The fuel & freight savings for many local manufacturers & distributors (like Meyer, Braun’s company) will be significant though.

Sounds like the bypass around the bypass in Kokomo. It helped people save time who didn't want to stop in Kokomo (Stoplight City) on US 31. People were afraid it could mean loss of business in Kokomo, but I don't think that's happened.

It did lighten up traffice around the 'old' 31 bypass.

I do hate to see good farmland paved over.

Good farmland was paved over in Daviess County for I69. All these years later the farmers are just fine.

I don't think it hurts the farmers - they make money off selling the land.

But, at some point, taking that much land out is going to lower overall production and that could increase prices. Eventually.

It also limits the amount of land available and drives up the cost of land.

Agree.

Southern Indiana needed I69. This new corridor isn’t needed like I69. Jasper was pissed they didn’t get 69.

No we weren’t, well, not most of us, just the Brauns, Segers, Menkes, Bawels, etc. Same folks that want the bypass. Most of us are just fine with our town just as it is…

Hell, you've got the Schnitzelbank - what more do they need?

Umm..
Drives up property taxes
Drives up cash rent costs
Drives up commodity prices
Drives up all federal crop subsidy/insurance programs
Drives up animal feed prices

Nothing much. Hopefully, in Beckwith’s case, he gets a job offer that’s too good to refuse and resigns to take it…the sooner the better.

But I think this is going to be a closer race than double digits. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trump outperform Braun by 8 or 9 points.

Ended up like 15. The McCormick stuff was always a joke.

The result surprised me, I have to say. Braun’s pretty uninspiring himself and his running mate is a radical loon.

I still am looking for the Dems to make inroads in the state. The GOP is becoming less and less Mitch Daniels’ party and more and more Micah Beckwith’s. And that is going to cause them problems.

Braun is a smart man and great businessman.

Edit: integrity

Just curious of what you think of having 30,000 new Haitian neighbors? Just in case there is some Indiana sponsored tourism literature already being printed, in haitian font.
Not saying that there is or if their isn't. Just sayin.

I didn't like Braun's Senate run and voted for one of his opponents in the primary. But thought he was pretty pragmatic while he was in office.

This is for the Indiana folks. Ever since Braun got shanked at the state GOP convention, I’ve been trying to figure out how we got here with Beckwith. Does anyone like him? Think he will do a good job? Isn’t completely nuts? I’m super curious on this one.
Beckwith is a Christian nationalist. Explicitly. He is good in a room of like minded idiots, but he struggles when the room is bigger.

Need proof?

He lost a city council bid in Noblesville.

He was appointed the public library board in Fishers (HEPL), sent that library down the path of a $50K 'project' to reorganize and ban books, only to be forced to step down from that position.

To be elected lieutenant governor in Indiana it means you get voted in by people who vastly politically aligned with you, then hope your gubernatorial running mate wins.

Well it's f-ing clear the people who have been adjacent to that seem OK with it. They keep telling idiots they're OK with it, but you be you and tell them what they should feel.

Otherwise, I don't care where my neighbors are from.

You should let them know how they're offended.

He might be pragmatic, but there are times when pragmatic turns into enabling. That happens because him being pragmatic relative to his position differs from him being pragmatic toward those who need help.

His position is nothing but a bully pulpit?

That sounds like a lot of gibberish. Anyway I'd say that Braun is a lot more like Mitch Daniels than he is Micah... Someone he didn't even want on his ticket. Hopefully he doesn't die

Braun definitely is a lot more like Mitch. Bloom sounded like the word salad crap Kamala gave us every time she spoke.

Yeah, I’ve had conversations with him (more about business than politics). He’s no dullard or radical. At least, he didn’t come across that way to me.

I don’t find him a particularly compelling politician. But I don’t think he’s anything we should worry about — except, as you say, the prospect of him dying in office.

But I wonder if Beckwith will have more influence over the party delegates than Braun ever could hope to have. Clearly a lot of them are more in his image - and are probably as wary of Braun as they have been Holcomb.

I mean the VP of the US still has very little to zero influence....I would imagine the Lt Gov of this state has even less. Most couldn't tell you the name of the current one

It is strangely satisfying to see that you are still a lying pos..after having your ass handed to you.
Micah was one of the Library board members who moved several books out of the children's section into the general section of that library...for content including violence, extreme sexual content, profanity, etc. Very few, if any, were 'banned'
Braun is now on notice...

I disagree. The Indiana D party is nonexistent. Most state legislature races were +30-60 R. Because of that and the fact that state keeps moving further right, I don’t think the Rs can do anything to negatively cut into their current power position. In fact, I would bet this next legislative session will be a real doozy with a lot of radical far right bills becoming law.
