"Indy Classic" announced , to replace Crossroads Classic...

Why not just schedule Davidson at home? Going to be an embarrassing crowd for this event.
Wouldn't Purdue have to pay a school like Davidson (<2,000 students) about $500,000 to $1 million to travel to Mackey and get beat? Maybe this way someone else pays Davidson to play Purdue and get beat..

Some small schools fund their entire basketball budgets by playing 3-4 larger schools on the road over a two-week period in the pre-conference season (and get beat).

Cal is willing to play every game in Indy, stated it many times post Wat Shot. Remember, IU-UK played the game in Indy/Lville for 20 years. All the games in Indy would be awesome in every way.
And, would be an awesome recruiting tool ... for Kentucky.

That would be very cool, actually. As an Illini fan who’s gone to the Braggin’ Rights game in St. Louis, this type of setup is so cool and definitely not what most fans think of when they hear “neutral site” or whatever:

A similar setup with Indiana/Kentucky would be a great event for sure. As someone whose sister lived in Indianapolis (Butler/Illini fan), I am surprised the Crossroads “failed.” I get Indiana brought most of the fans, but Indy is just such a great setup for any event like that, and IU dominating the crowd didn’t seem to be like some big issue…
The only thing U. Of Illinois has ever done that I agree with was to print tee-shirts saying "Be My (Ted) Valentine" and harassing that corrupt referee endlessly.

Maybe. The event where no one can win big anymore. Right? Might as well keep Purdue in it at that point. I'd rather play in the Phil knight even than that though. Purdue gets multiple marquee games a year, so I'm not worried about their schedule.
Davidson is very marquee..

Yup. You missed my point there.... point is, not worried about the competition Purdue plays in non con. They play good teams each year. I'd rather beat top 25ish teams than lose to Arizona and Kansas. One is better for getting in the tournament.

Lol what top 25ish teams are you going to beat this year in non con? You realize Davidson will be pretty bad, right? They lost 3 of their top 4 players.

Idk. Have to wait and see, but I don't expect Purdue to be terrible.

Purdue's non-conference schedule was 261st in the nation last year per KenPom and that's with one of the opponents making an improbable run to the final game.

I had UNC to the final 4 in my bracket. Not sure how improbable it was. They were the team I didn't want to see if Purdue had made the elite 8. Or that just shows how flukey the tournament is and doesn't really provide an accurate representation of who the best team is.

And no, I'm not saying that because Purdue hasn't won the NCAA tournament and it's my way of accepting that. I want Purdue to win it and was disappointed that they played bad vs Saint Peter's. But it is a flukey way to determine the best team.

That’s terrific. Still doesn’t dispute the fact that UNC had one Q1 win with 2 weeks left in the season coming off a 20 point home loss to Pitt. They drew a favorable 1 seed who had a ton of injuries at the end of the year and played a 15 seed to go to the F4.

You aren't wrong. They got hot at the right time. Had luck fall their way.

Someone at the table doesn't want to play the game all that badly. If both Woody and Cal wanted to play the game bad enough, they'd have already agreed to play it in Indy every year.

My guess is Kentucky doesn't want to add this game back onto their schedule, right now. They have the Louisville game every year. And they always have at least 1-2 top 10 level games preconference as well. And the SEC plays one of the other major conferences every year like the B10/ACC...can't remember which one.

I also think recruiting has changed enough since the Wat Shot days...social media, transfer portal dynamics, etc... that the bump in recruiting from playing a big game in Indy, is MUCH less than it used to be. The incentive to play in Indy, and the risk to allowing big national brands to play in Indy...isn't nearly as big of a factor.

In the end...my guess is IU wants the game back, and UK doesn't really care enough to push for it.
Tan Tommy and Surfboard Fred blew this annual game up. I will never forgive or forget Surfboard's quote, "homey don't play this way". He and tan tommy destroyed the UK rivalry, because they pompously "did not get it". Surfboard was an IU basketball DISASTER.

....and IU is replacing the Crossroads Classic with a tournament that involves IU, Miami (Ohio), Arkansas-Little Rock and Jackson State. No comment needed.
way better than broilees "indy classic", lol. IU plays Arizona, Kansas UNC and #21 Xavier-who you got?

So what did you mean by "I would rather beat a top 25ish team than lose to Kansas and Arizona"? It doesn't seem like it's an either or scenario. Davidson won't be top 50 let alone top 25ish. IU will win at least one of the games against Kansas, Arizona, or UNC.

I don't think iu is better than those 3 yet. That was my point. Woodson has a lot to prove this year before I'm ready to hype him and iu. I do think iu is a top 4 of the big ten, 4-6 seed type team though.

You don't have to be better than any of them to win 1 out of the 3 games. This will be the best IU team since at least 2016.

I'm not even sure how you got onto this since we were talking about Purdue and their laughable crossroads replacement.

Florida St will probably be the most underrated team in the nation...

That's not a good draw for them.

broilees don't play them in March, so broilees have a chance....

NTSU, the Peacocks and VCU approve this message......VCU just made another layup.

FSU should win that game ... in any month. Purdue has a mid major level backcourt this year and that's not hyperbole. What would be funny is if they lose in their own rinky dink shabby ass classic... which is also a possibility.

why do you think that? National TV with 36k fans in Indy can only help IU. UK is on TV nationally every week. Any 5 star Indiana HS kid will see their games, and go to several in person in Lexington. IU competing and sometimes beating UK will only help our recruiting. Playing a national schedule with arguably the best blue blood every year can only help IU's recruiting. IU has lost only a few players to uk that we wanted over the last 30 years.

OK. My slam was that the broilees rarely win a big game in March (tourney time)

I know .. I was just pointing out FSU will most likely be a better team than Purdue. Maybe not ,,, you never know ... but PU's lack of guards and Edey's ability to make defense look impossibly hard will keep a lot of poor teams in the game with them.

IU/UNC will be close to a pick ‘em in Bloomington as will the game out in Vegas against Arizona, who loses a ton. It will be a tall task to win at Phog Allen given the environment but not at all out of the question to think IU goes 2-1 against their 3 marquee non-conference opponents.

2200 BSU fans
125 Davidson fans
250 Ill State fans
5900 broilee fans
8,475 announced attendance
Games cancelled after 3 years.

IU needs to schedule UK, every year, at the Dome, same weekend. 36,000 evenly divided fans, national TV, most watched game of the year. Cal is willing- every year in Indy!
They never brought 5,900 fans to the CC, why would they start now?

Not remotely accurate, but we understand why you need to lash out.

No...no they didn't.

P Who?
Davidson is where S. Curry played right?
Illinois State is where Doug Collins went.
Ball State has Luke Brown.
Such a stellar field will likely draw almost no TV ratings

Having a 64 team tournament is a "flukey" way to determine the best team? How else are you supposed to do it, rock, paper, scissors?!

What's better? A Helm's championship?

It's wasn't a fluke when Purdue lost to N. Texas, they had better guard-play, same with St Peter's. Your excuses are weak and pathetic ..

Next year Purdue has a backcourt Davidson would be embarrassed to have ..
