"Indy Classic" announced , to replace Crossroads Classic...

Purdue loves this move. They had the worst record in the Crossroads, so they went out to find 3 mid majors to make it easier.

So the Wooden Classic is now the Indy Classic or Purdue is just along for the ride? Hard to make the argument that Purdue is in the driver's seat based on the press release.

I would be shocked if this event were even profitable now. Ball State, Illinois State, and Davidson will probably bring crowds that look like ND's from the Crossroads. So not only will attendance be way down from the previous years, the prices will also be down significantly.

This is a great reminder for what IU's history specifically does for the program.

UNC matchup in the ACC challenge...despite finishing as low as we did last year in the B10.

Arizona and Kansas matchups to replace Crossroads games.

Outside a handful of anomalous good seasons, IU basketball has been mediocre to bad, since the mid 90s. We barely squeaked into the NCAA's last year, and got destroyed by a mid major by 30 when we got there. We didn't add any lottery pick type talent to our roster. And despite all that, we're projected to win the B10, and are showing up as an outside shot type team to make a Final Four... and we have these amazing games to look forward to. Purdue has owned us basically in recent years. They've been better by pretty much any metric. They finished higher than we did in the conference. They just produced a top 5 pick...We got UNC, they got Florida State.

Media and casual fans, after close to 30 years, are STILL dying for IU basketball to be good. And they still couldn't care less about Purdue.

Ticketmaster is the ticket provider. There's no allotment to each school in that case. I assume the crowd will be mostly purdoo fans and then ball state fans will round out the crowd.

I'd guess it's just a one year thing to get a few easier, but still decent resume, games in the non conference since they already have some solid games in their non-con. Not worried about the Purdue non-con schedule.

2200 BSU fans
125 Davidson fans
250 Ill State fans
5900 broilee fans
8,475 announced attendance
Games cancelled after 3 years.

IU needs to schedule UK, every year, at the Dome, same weekend. 36,000 evenly divided fans, national TV, most watched game of the year. Cal is willing- every year in Indy!

Why not just schedule Davidson at home? Going to be an embarrassing crowd for this event.

Indy may be the only option unless IU is willing to go to Rupp every other year. It’s clear he wants nothing to do with assembly hall. I doubt IU/Woodson wants that.

We were willing to go to rupp every other year. Cal said no. Woody had said he likes the idea of games on campus but is willing to play anywhere.

Cal is willing to play every game in Indy, stated it many times post Wat Shot. Remember, IU-UK played the game in Indy/Lville for 20 years. All the games in Indy would be awesome in every way.

Couldn't tell ya. I'd guess Purdue just likes to go to Indy for a game. I'd guess Purdue will have a nice crowd there considering it's not far from Mackey and Mackey sells out every game as is. That's just my guess though.

Cal doesn't want IU coming into Rupp unless we're down and he's loaded. That's why he bailed after the WatShot. He knew the next year was going to be a beatdown on his home court and ruin his beloved home streak.
And well documented that he's too chickenshit to step foot in Assy Hall ever again.
Screw Cal, screw UK. Our new schedule is loaded. WE don't need UK. Although it would be fun to watch another Saturday night burning couch fest in Lexington after an IU game.

Purdue will probably have about 9k fans there and there will be 10k total.

That would be very cool, actually. As an Illini fan who’s gone to the Braggin’ Rights game in St. Louis, this type of setup is so cool and definitely not what most fans think of when they hear “neutral site” or whatever:

A similar setup with Indiana/Kentucky would be a great event for sure. As someone whose sister lived in Indianapolis (Butler/Illini fan), I am surprised the Crossroads “failed.” I get Indiana brought most of the fans, but Indy is just such a great setup for any event like that, and IU dominating the crowd didn’t seem to be like some big issue…

The crossroads didn’t fail. IU wanted a bigger game. They succeeded with a Home/Away with Kansas. If IU wanted to keep playing the crossroads it would have been renewed.

I know. The reason is because the Yum center isn’t an option. Freedom hall is in disrepair from what I hear. No other neutral sites are available. So it’s either home/home(probably won’t happen), neutral only or a combo (Rupp/Indy)that leaves out assembly hall.

Make no mistake the idea is to get involved with bigger games in Indy. IU will have an elite schedule in the next 2 years. 1-2 games in Indy.

It is when you're bringing the majority of the fans via the secondary ticket market and only getting 25% of the take while being relegated to beating up on Butler or ND every year. Wins that don't really matter and losses can only hurt you.

IU has played UK at neutral sites over 25 times in the regular season with 19 of those being in the late 80s, 90s and 2000s as it rotated between the Hoosier Dome and Freedom Hall. You don't need to come explain to us how great the St. Louis game is with Mizzou and you guys. We've been part of neutral site games in a series that actually mattered in the big picture of CBB vs. a footnote rivalry game you have that's similar to X and UC in the crosstown rivalry.

Keep telling us all about your hoops knowledge though. It's very enlightening.

I'm guessing, if this is more than a 1 year thing, the competition will get better as well. Short notice.
Maybe the competition will become great and Purdue won’t even be invited. IU, UK, Louisville, and OSU seems okay

Maybe. The event where no one can win big anymore. Right? Might as well keep Purdue in it at that point. I'd rather play in the Phil knight even than that though. Purdue gets multiple marquee games a year, so I'm not worried about their schedule.

Someone at the table doesn't want to play the game all that badly. If both Woody and Cal wanted to play the game bad enough, they'd have already agreed to play it in Indy every year.

My guess is Kentucky doesn't want to add this game back onto their schedule, right now. They have the Louisville game every year. And they always have at least 1-2 top 10 level games preconference as well. And the SEC plays one of the other major conferences every year like the B10/ACC...can't remember which one.

I also think recruiting has changed enough since the Wat Shot days...social media, transfer portal dynamics, etc... that the bump in recruiting from playing a big game in Indy, is MUCH less than it used to be. The incentive to play in Indy, and the risk to allowing big national brands to play in Indy...isn't nearly as big of a factor.

In the end...my guess is IU wants the game back, and UK doesn't really care enough to push for it.

Jesus, dude, chill out. Pretty clearly posted with good intentions, and you responded like a combative weirdo. lol.

when knight was here and a few years afterward iu played a classic against 2 shit teams every year in Indianapolis around the holidays, I always enjoyed it, fun to be in Indy that time of year, bankers life is 10x better to watch a game at than assembly hall. gave people a chance to see the team in the state's largest city. ncaa tournament predominately played in pro arenas, lot of positives to what Purdue is doing. you have 15 non-conference games many ways to fit something like this in. last time I went to the old classic some shit school from Indy beat us. was the beginning of butlers run to national prominence

....and IU is replacing the Crossroads Classic with a tournament that involves IU, Miami (Ohio), Arkansas-Little Rock and Jackson State. No comment needed.
No they're not. Those games are being played in mid-November as part of a round robin on different dates. IU is playing at Kansas this year and hosts them the following year in Bloomington on the date Crossroads used to be scheduled.

Nice try Jackass.
