Indiana's (the state, no the school) slippery 2013 recruiting class

Recalling how deep the talent in the 2013 HS recruiting class was and how we got a lot of the guys we wanted but missed on others, I wondered how the people who went to other schools were doing. The theme seemed to be most leaving the programs they originally signed with due to a number of factors. The list of Rivals Top 20 recruits from Indiana in 2013 finds...

  1. Jaylon Smith (5*) - pre-season All-American at Notre Dame
  2. Elijah Daniel (4*) - dismissed in May from Auburn program after April arrest for robbery. Had been expected to be starting DT. Transferred to and is currently playing at Murray State.
  3. Tim Kimborough (4*) - starting LB at Georgia
  4. Danny Etling (4*) - started QB as freshman at Purdue, benched sophomore year and left at end of season. Transferred to LSU where one writer called him an "insurance quarterback" brought in to compete for job next year.
  5. Antonio Allen (4*) - you know the story - now at ISU
  6. David Kenny (4*) - you know this story - now at Illinois State
  7. Darius Latham (4*) - and this one (though all we know is he's 'suspended from team activity' right now)
  8. John Kenny (3*) - on Iowa's roster for two years. Left after last season. Currently sitting out transfer year at Arizona
  9. Chase Dutra (3*) - starting S for IU
  10. TyVel Jemison (3*) - signed LOI with Purdue, but played at Grand Valley State for two years. Doesn't seem to currently be on Purdue's (or anyone's) roster
  11. Dan Samuelson (3*) - on Michigan roster for two years, but never cracked two-deep. Left program this summer with intent to transfer. No indication on where he went.
  12. Calvin Blank (3*) - Two years on Ball State's roster, transferred to ISU for 2015 season.
  13. Nate Wozniak (3*) - playing at Minnesota
  14. Skylar Lacy (3*) - on Louisville roster, but not currently on 2-deep at his position
  15. Thomas Shoaf (3*) - in an 'only at BYU' thing, he was on roster in 2013 but is currently serving on his mission. BYU has a dozen guys on their 'mission roster'
  16. Michael Hicks (3*) - I can't find evidence that he ever signed or enrolled anywhere
  17. Tim Gardner (3*) - dismissed from Ohio State before 2013, spent a year in prep school and is now enrolled at IU
  18. Andrew Spencer (3*) - no evidence of signing or playing anywhere
  19. Isaac Griffith (3*) - still at IU after near-drowning incident and serving a suspension following a OWI arrest
  20. David Yancey (3*) - on Purdue roster as a RB. Got first carry this year.

So 20 guys. 18 signed or played somewhere. 17 played at the school for which they signed an LOI (one of the 17 on inactive roster due to Mormon mission). 9 still at the school where they signed their LOI out of HS. 3 transferred to other FBS programs. 4 transferred to FCS programs. 1 is unaccounted for.

I have no idea if this is a typical attrition rate. I mostly wanted to know if IU was unique in shedding IN-bred guys from our 2013 class (at least from the crop of 'top recruits' that signed).
