That’s fair. Part of the reason I’m not pissed is that I don’t know what went on behind the scenes. Could be that my 1st choice, BM, was legitimately unimpressive during the vetting process. It depends on who the other realistic candidates were.

After the Initial depression wears off, most people tend to look at the bright side. A very human way of coping.I’m coming around.
Tucker DeVries at wing.
Malik as a big.
WVUs sophomore wing/big.
Powell, Sincere Harris, Zyrno as guards.
Sisley as a bench Wing.
Go get some dudes in the portal. But above is an NCAA caliber team.
We saw it with Kentucky last year. Expectations higher than Mark Pope were pie in the sky. If DeVries gets us back on track restoring Indiana's name by winning big games and making tournaments that will be exactly what the doctor ordered. At that point we can try to swing our dick around and grab an Otz or McCaslandYou’re livin that Georgia lake life. You’ve got more years than you know.
There’s something wrong with this program. Too many resources. Too much money. Too much tradition. A state that loves basketball. Too many advantages. To hire a guy who should be looking at northwestern or minny. After seven years at wvu and a 75 percent winning percentage a final four and an elite 8 THEN on iu’s radar.
He isn’t young and just got a job at a high major and missed the tourney. Same record as the guy we fired. He has one ncaa tourney win.
Something is off
The DeVries hire, by itself, isn't at IU's level...or shouldn't be. But Dolson could make it so pretty quickly, by leap frogging most of college basketball, and restructuring the entire program to be at the forefront of the new college bball world. Maybe he wanted to do that, and DeVries was just the right level of good basketball coach/mind, and not proven enough or just is open enough for it.
If he brings the top 2-3 WVU guys along with DeVries…he’d be poised at that to have the best team IU has had since 2016. DeVries, Harris, Hansberry, and Powell…along with Sisley and Zyrno… that’s probably a solid NCAA team…Now that the shock has worn off, I am beginning to change my mind. Tutored under Altman and McDermott. Increased wins every year at Drake with 3 trips to the dance. Turned WV around in year one. Has three 4 stars coming in and his son 2 time conference POY. Perhaps he can bring with him. Plays D and they hustle. Keep a few of our guys, bring his recruits, get some signings to change their minds, hit the portal hard, keep our recruits. I think we might be a tournament team next year. I am becoming somewhat optimistic.
I don’t get the doom and gloom. I’m pretty pumped about this guy.
SD not waiting until the NCAAT was over shows he didn't think he could close on NCAAT coaches. Not doom and gloom. Just realistic. This guy may be great. Odds are unlikely. Ceiling is higher than it ever was with Woody from day 1, so guess we've got that going for us. And we bested mighty Iowa to get him.

Four were women. They must have gotten turned down by 37 coaches.
I prefer great to good/decent. Good/decent gets their ass kicked by great.
This is a well written article. It is behind a paywall but there is an excerpt from the free part of it that breaks down this situation well. It basically says this
There is basically enough NIL money for IU basketball that the reason a recruit or transfer does not choose IU will never be because the bag of money isn’t big enough
Devries should be able to get whoever he wants as long as they want to play for him
As long as he’s a decent coach we should see a significant change in reislts

Or they already communicated through back channels that they were not interested. Or for some, they were not squeaky-clean enough.SD not waiting until the NCAAT was over shows he didn't think he could close on NCAAT coaches.
ABC: always be closing. If Scott can't close, try fundraising.Or they already communicated through back channels that they were not interested. Or for some, they were not squeaky-clean enough.
By hiring him now, DD can get a jump on the portal, convince WV recruits to follow, convince our squad to stay and perhaps change some signings to rethink their commitments. Get a solid staff lined up as well.Or they already communicated through back channels that they were not interested. Or for some, they were not squeaky-clean enough.
I am predicting that he willIf he can get Mullins to flip I might get on board with the hire.
We haven’t even had Good in 30 years.I prefer great to good/decent. Good/decent gets their ass kicked by great.
Louisville is not blue blood… but thanks for playingLol. Did you not learn anything from the Louisville and sky hires last year?
Malik is now in the portal. He gone.I’m coming around.

"Best hire since Sampson" is a low bar.Haven’t spent much time on this board, but surprised so many dislike this hire. I think it’s the best hire since Sampson, as far as coaching goes. This guy has been very successful, and if you look at the McDermott tree, a lot of talent learned from him. Not many coaches I would rather have that aren’t entrenched somewhere. Those thinking Brad was walking through that door are moronic. Same with Pitino, Beard or Wade. Non-starters.
JFC - Be happy that Woodson is gone and we have an actual coach coming. I think he could be very good! But we will know in a couple years. Enjoy the ride instead of bitching all the time. Been enough of that the last two years!
It’s the bar we have to ourselves. Not going to research the whole NCAA for the last 20 years."Best hire since Sampson" is a low bar.
I never heard his name to iu til yesterday but I would pick him over mccullum just because of experience. It may bite us but mccullum just did not have the d1 experience yet. In two years could have been differentIowa fans are in distress. Most favored DD over McCollum.
In a charity event where Tennessee couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. IU was 0-11 on 3 pointers. They were 3 of 20.Didn't Woodrow beat Tennessee?
I wouldn’t knock Iowa right now. We are 4-6 in our last 10 matchups. Not doom and gloom. Just realistic. This guy may be great. Odds are unlikely. Ceiling is higher than it ever was with Woody from day 1, so guess we've got that going for us. And we bested mighty Iowa to get him.
I don't know that he will, hard to fault a kid for picking the 2X NC, who is trying to make it 3. But, I'm confident DD will contact both he and Haralson and it won't surprise me if one of them flips. He's on board ahead of everyone other coach and has a big NIL bag to play with. I think we'll see a lot of pieces fall pretty quickly and I'd guess he'll meet with every player we have while in Btown and will get some to stay. I also think he'll get 1-2 of his WVU commits to come, and probably a player or 2. Next year? I'd guess top 4 in conference and a winning record in conference and a solid tourney bid.I am predicting that he will
Our new coach actually values shooting and Hurley, if he is telling the truth, said half his team will be in the portal...I don't know that he will, hard to fault a kid for picking the 2X NC, who is trying to make it 3. I think the committee actually did us a big favor, because if they'd put WVU in, things would've had to wait at least a week. Now SD got the guy he wanted (minus the top tier guys and Wade/Beard) with at least a week jump on all the other programs hiring a new coach.
I understand, but I wouldn't put too much on 1 kid, who made a good choice and also has 7 months of selling himself on UConn. I am confident DD will reach out to both he and JH, whether they listen or not, is not in his control. Our new coach actually values shooting and Hurley, if he is telling the truth, said half his team will be in the portal...
