Hoosiers Tie No. 18 Maryland on the Road, 0-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Indiana University men's soccer team traveled east to College Park, Md. and played the No. 18 Maryland Terrapins to a tie, 0-0.

With the result, Indiana moves to 7-4-2 on the season overall and to 1-3-1 in Big Ten conference play. Maryland goes to 6-3-4 on the year and to 2-1-3 in league play.

Indiana goalkeeper Colin Webb made a season-high six saves en route to posting his Big Ten-leading sixth shutout of the year. Webb now has 16 shutouts for his Hoosier career.

Tanner Thompson led Indiana with five shots on the day, getting a pair on goal. Femi Hollinger-Janzen had four shots, while Phil Fives got both his attempts on goal for IU.

In the 8th minute, Andrew Gutman did well to work himself in to the left side of the 18-yard box. The freshman sent in a low cross, finding Phil Fives, but his shot from six yards out was saved the Maryland goalie.

Just two minutes later after a long throw from Tanner Thompson, the ball was flicked to the back right post. Billy McConnell's scissor kick from five yards out hit the post. The rebound fell to Femi Hollinger-Janzen, who's attempt at goal from 10 yards sailed high of the crossbar.

In the 32nd minute, Gutman again sent a great cross in to the box for the Hoosiers. His cross found a streaking Hollinger-Janzen but his header from nine yards just missed, going wide of the left post.

With just a minute left in the first half, Hollinger-Janzen nearly gave the Hoosiers the lead, but his right-footed shot from the right side of the box missed just wide of the far right post.

After 45 minutes of play, the match was still tied at 0-0. In the first half, Indiana out-shot the Terrapins, 9-8, with Maryland getting three shots on goal to two for the Hoosiers. Corner kicks were 4-3 for IU at the break.

In the 61st minute, the Hoosiers again missed a goal by inches. Working down the left side, Thompson sent a cross to the far right post that found Kyle Sparks all by himself, but his header sailed just high of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Five minutes later, Thompson found himself behind the Maryland defense after a great ball played to him by Austin Panchot. With the Terrapin goalkeeper charging at him, Thompson attempted to chip the ball over the keeper, but his shot missed just left of the far right post.

Late in the second half, Thompson had a pair of looks at goal, but was unable to get the breakthrough for the Hoosiers. At the end of 90 minutes, the match remained tied at 0-0 and headed to overtime.

In the 97th minute, Thompson continued his aggressive offensive attack. Working back right, Thompson cracked a shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but his attempt was saved by the Terrapin goalie.

IU had the better of it in the first overtime, as Thompson's attempt was the only good look for either team. The match headed to a second extra session still tied at 0-0.

In the second overtime, Maryland had three shots, but the IU defense would not crack. With under a minute left, Maryland had a pair of corners, but Webb and the Hoosiers were stout, as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Indiana men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, October 20 when team returns to Bloomington to host the Louisville Cardinals at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Thanks for the updates as usual. I am trying to watch the game on BTN right now, but they have football coverage instead. I hate BTN some days.
