Indiana Special Team Grades 3rd In FBS-89.2 PFF

-1st in blocked punts(4)
-2nd in SPT tackling(Byrson Bonds, Isiah Jones)
-24th in ST Efficiency
-But it seemed in the big games, ST wasn't up to snuff.

Wow...

So just a slight tweak here and there and those guys could go from good to Great...

-----------------------------/------

I have my Doubts about them this season though...

We play several really tough away games against teams with great speed on Special Teams (Iowa, Oregon, &Penn State), along with one that will undoubtedly be giving their best effort of their pathetic season (p u) and even Maryland has good speed on the Teams, so we have a much tougher row to hoe this time around...

I'm not sure this years group is up to the task at hand... They'll have to show me more than just last years stats for me to get excited about this years guys...

The big questions are:
Will our technique be good enough to overcome all that speed out there we'll be facing in Big games...? Can we be better and more consistent than last year when it matters?

🤔😕

I don't want to put too much blame but the season ended very poorly for the former All-Big Ten punter. Against Michigan, his punt in the 4th quarter where IU was only up a score and wanted to keep Michigan deep on their own side went for a meager 25 yards. In the OSU game Evans obviously had the muffed snap but the first drive in the second half his punt outkicked the coverage which let Caleb Downs return it for a touchdown. Against Notre Dame he had a couple in the first half that should have kept ND at least a few yards farther back. All in all a disappointing for a player who was a bright spot during his tenure.

Hopefully McCarthy is fine with not getting game reps for long periods as I hope IU continues their blistering offense to start the season. Getting back Vanhorse would be great albeit hilarious as he'd be an eighth year, Jones and Bonds being named in tackling is great for continuity though I wonder if Jones will move off ST to get more reps at LB, and hopefully Radicic will increase his power so that Cignetti will trust him from 45+. I know Tyler Morris likely has PR locked down but I'd really like to see Lebron Bond taking punts since the spot has no one with experience returning (only Price and Williams recorded punt return yards last season).
