Couple questions....

1) why are there Illinois games listed on the schedule?

2) How do you qualify for the state tourney in Indiana? I've heard you have conferences...do you have to win those or something?

Not sure about the Illinois games. During the regular season, many western IN teams play Ill schools but not in the state tournament. Unless you are seeing East Chicago Central - East Chicago is in Indiana.

Our state football tournament is open to all football playing schools. Everyone qualifies for the opening round (sectional) and the setup is a blind draw. No seeding. This is the way our State Athletic Association runs the state tournament for every team sport.
It does lead to some bad mismatches during the opening round and it extends the season but it seems to work better than a couple of other methods we tried when the tournament was in its early stages. Indiana has only had a state tournament in football since the 1970's. The "all-comers" feature began in the mid-1980's. Teams that advance to the late rounds of the tournament for two consecutive years move up a class now due to a success factor that was implemented a couple of years ago.

Southern Indiana, around the Vincennes / Evansville area, Mount Carmel is part of the Big Eight Conference along with Jasper, Princeton, Boonville, Mount Vernon (Posey) Vincennes Lincoln and Washington. I believe that Illinois starts and ends their season a week after Indiana high schools do. Mount Carmel is tracked on the website I use because of their association with an Indiana HS Conference.
