never seen Drake play. missed yesterday's win. but if this guy starts 4 d2 players what he accomplished this year is amazing. hope the hell he isn't a problem for us the next 15 years at Iowa. I will watch them tomorrow
Yes, he appears to be the Cignetti of college basketball. I guess we had our chance, but maybe not. McCollum may not want a job like an IU, where you’re constantly in the fish bowl.D2 aren't necessarily worse players. They may have been players that were overlooked for one reason or another.
It does seem to point to McCollum having a good eye for talent and being a good recruiter.

That’s not his style though. He may stay at Drake. I think he will.It appears BM is the basketball version of Cig: he wins, Google him. He's only got D-2 players? Doesn't matter. He will go somewhere bigger, get better players, and kick ass.
I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. No f'ing way he stays at Drake. His stock is through the roof. He will be moving on to a big program. He will get more money, NIL, and better players. That’s not his style though. He may stay at Drake. I think he will.

If I'm an AD for a P4 school... After making damn sure he and his agents know how much I want him as my coach... If I get an in person interview... I slide him a blank piece of paper and say... "These are my expectations for you, and how you run your basketball program here. You can write whatever you want on that paper, I'll be here to help you however I can. But I want you to write the next chapter of basketball at this university."That’s not his style though. He may stay at Drake. I think he will.
BM isn't at a power 4 job yet, just like Cig before he took the IU job.Comparing McCollum to Cig is not even close. Cig got second in the B10, McCollum won the MVC. Cig went to the CFP. McCollum won a tourney game.
Not at Iowa. He’s a different kind. He might go but he’s just built different.I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. No f'ing way he stays at Drake. His stock is through the roof. He will be moving on to a big program. He will get more money, NIL, and better players.
I could be wrong, but he seems to be a guy who would be most comfortable in an Iowa level job. I can’t see a coach like him going to UK, for example.I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. This is the vibe I got but I’m not sure he wants even Iowa. He might though. Rumors are rumors.I could be wrong, but he seems to be a guy who would be most comfortable in an Iowa level job. I can’t see a coach like him going to UK, for example.
I'll counter that with the recently hired IU coach. DD and BM came from the same place. BM can basically write his own ticket at this point.I could be wrong, but he seems to be a guy who would be most comfortable in an Iowa level job. I can’t see a coach like him going to UK, for example.
I suspect some of the outside influence factors probably do play a role with McCollum...so you might be right on jobs like IU, UK, Kansas, etc... not being a great fit for him. I suspect he will land at a school like Iowa, and will build them to become an elite national program. Maybe not Iowa specifically, but a place that will insulate him from donors and outside influences, and allow him to run the program how he sees fit.I could be wrong, but he seems to be a guy who would be most comfortable in an Iowa level job. He was born in Iowa City. West Virginia, Virginia and Villanova should be going after him as well. I would be shocked if he stays at Drake. Iowa seems like a perfect fit for him but he could get a bigger job. This is the vibe I got but I’m not sure he wants even Iowa. He might though. Rumors are rumors.
why would he need insulated from donors and outside influencers? that's going to happen wherever you coach at the p4 level.I suspect some of the outside influence factors probably do play a role with McCollum...so you might be right on jobs like IU, UK, Kansas, etc... not being a great fit for him. Bob McKillop stayed at Davidson when he had the opportunity to move up, and increase his pay, to P5 schools multiple times. I compared his career and earnings to that of Buzz Peterson. Peterson struck while the iron was hot at every turn: App St, Tulsa, Tenn, then rode it ride back down to Coastal, App St (again), and out of coaching after UNCW. McKillop stayed at Davidson through (mostly) highs and a few average seasons but I'm sure got regular extensions and increases (a big one after Steph Curry and E8 appearance!) and didn't have to move all over the country and retired in Davidson as a highly respected community member. Took them from the Big South to the SoCon to the A10, again with salary increases. Let's say he averaged $500K/yr over 30 years: he made $15 million. Buzz probably made in the range of $8 mill over a 20ish yr career, but moved every couple years and was out of coaching a couple years and then permanently after UNCW.I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. No f'ing way he stays at Drake. His stock is through the roof. He will be moving on to a big program. He will get more money, NIL, and better players.
You know, I've read several people say that he had other opportunities to move up and didn't, but that article about him suggests he didn't. And that there's a stigma about D2 that makes it hard for coaches there to move up.Bob McKillop stayed at Davidson when he had the opportunity to move up, and increase his pay, to P5 schools multiple times. McCollum well could be more like McKillop, especially if you consider him spending 14 years in D2. I'm sure he had opps to move up and didn't.
Just guesses here...but I would guess he just wants to do the traditional college basketball coaching stuff... Recruiting, scouting, evaluating, player relationship and development, practices, games...etc... And taking that dinner meeting with the Cooks, or entertaining big wig family X for a practice, or schmoozing for NIL money, etc... isn't overly appealing to him. There are P4 schools where that would be a MUCH less substantial part of the job than at IU.why would he need insulated from donors and outside influencers? that's going to happen wherever you coach at the p4 level.
McCollum was who I really wanted to see us get. No idea if we went after him. If he ends up at Iowa, we either didn’t go after him at all, or he wanted nothing to do with Indiana. Hard to imagine a scenario where IU offered a coach a job and the coach took a job at Iowa instead. I suppose it’s possible, but I’m guessing we didn’t even bother. That’s my bias popping out.never seen Drake play. missed yesterday's win. but if this guy starts 4 d2 players what he accomplished this year is amazing. hope the hell he isn't a problem for us the next 15 years at Iowa. From his interviews. Past behaviors. He’s just different. Kind of like Scott Drew. Drew is not a fit just anywhere. Like some of us. Would you fit in LA etc. What's with all this babe in the woods crap about McCollum? Just because he was at D2 and now Drake doesn't mean he's some kind of meek genius. Why does everybody assume that?
Why did he stay at one school in D2 for 15 years? With his record he could have moved up to mid-major D1 at least.I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. No f'ing way he stays at Drake. His stock is through the roof. He will be moving on to a big program. He will get more money, NIL, and better players.
Quite the opposite for me, he has a vision of how he wants to work and how he wants to be treated won't compromise it. RMK had a job at Wisconsin all buttoned up, they screwed up and leaked it early, and he pulled out, then came to IU.What's with all this babe in the woods crap about McCollum? Just because he was at D2 and now Drake doesn't mean he's some kind of meek genius. Why does everybody assume that?
Has Bo Ryan taught us nothing? What's with all this babe in the woods crap about McCollum? Just because he was at D2 and now Drake doesn't mean he's some kind of meek genius. Why does everybody assume that?

I suspect we'll never know what happened. Or what didn't.Yes, he appears to be the Cignetti of college basketball. I guess we had our chance, but maybe not. McCollum may not want a job like an IU, where you’re constantly in the fish bowl.

I mean every single program with an open job should have a bidding war for him. I guess we are about to see how valued he is outside of our discussionsHe was born in Iowa City. West Virginia, Virginia and Villanova should be going after him as well. I would be shocked if he stays at Drake. Iowa seems like a perfect fit for him but he could get a bigger job.
Let's be honest he's not going to win the whole thing, as soon as he loses he'll just be one of this year's Cinderella teams for most people.I mean every single program with an open job should have a bidding war for him. I guess we are about to see how valued he is outside of our discussions
No Ryan didn't have to compete in the nil area. He could keep players 4 and 5 years to learn his system. Totally different now. But I know some of you think he is a sure thing so my argument will not matter.Has Bo Ryan taught us nothing?
Didn't read it, but 4 D2 NCs? Can't believe he didn't get opportunities. Someone said in another interview he said he was picky in analyzing positions and wanted specific criteria met. I'd say far more likely he had opps but nixed them. Thought I read somewhere that he really wavered in accepting the Drake job, even the night before he did finally agree to take it.You know, I've read several people say that he had other opportunities to move up and didn't, but that article about him suggests he didn't. And that there's a stigma about D2 that makes it hard for coaches there to move up.
Now that the transfer rules allow you to take your whole team with you, he also might feel like it's easier to move.
And? I'll bet there were some really great people from Jeffrey Dahmer's hometown too. Heck, even in the same household you'll have siblings with totally different value systems. For example: I hear Cavs siblings are great people.DD and BM came from the same place.
