and making it a more realistic re-telling. Less romantic. Less romanticized. Less gentility.

Example - I’m torn between a snide, arrogant Matt McConaughey “Rhett Butler”versus a mean and angry Billy Bob Thornton “Rhett Butler.” Maybe a McConaughey as a less gallant Ashley Wilkes, with Wilkes and Butler openly hostile to each other over secession. Maybe a Goggins as a tight-wired Wilkes - who defends cousin-marrying genetic purity and rapes slaves?

Scarlett? I used to favor Holly Hunter, then Julia Roberts as a less flirtatious, but more sensual Scarlett. Now, I have no feel for who would pull it off .

I’d cut the “lackey” out and use Shaq as a feared and virtually silent Big Sam, who stays under “control” only to protect female family.

Let’s do something meaningful on the Cooler on the way out. How would you change the “story” and cast?

Shaq is an American treasure

Goggins fantastic too. Hitting a home run here floor. Work Thomas Haden church in somehow for humor

I'm dreaming of a Billy Bob, " Frankly I don't give a ....." line in the style of his character in "Landman". It would be EPIC .
Landman is terrible. It’s soap opera dogshit which we obviously like but it’s terrible. And I’ll of course watch. He’s fcking his legacy on that show but whatever.

Joe. We’re closing the doors on sister wives tonight. Kody. All that energy. Boundless. He pissed away on fat wives. Dumb fck. Now. To his credit. He did parlay it into tv $$$. But Jesus.

And what exactly is wrong with fcking your legacy exactly? Please be specific. Maybe it was just a break up for all the wrong reasons? Maybe.

It's tough out there dude ! Or so a friend told me, I probably wouldn't know myself.

Recast Javier Bardam as Rhett Butler . . .

“Where shall I go? What shall I do?";

“Call it”

Timothee Chalamet for Ashley
Lily James for Scarlett? I’d like Natalie Portman or Keira Knighley but they are too old.
Gotta think more on this.

Now that you mention it - Brolin might make a good Butler.

I think I would add a character too - a local who saw what was to be, and went to fight for the Union as a way of trying to maybe keep the family land after the war. His family is still in the South, on the land, trying to survive, getting treated badly by the Plantation south, but helped by the poor folks who had no slaves.

I'd like to work in a scene where Wilkes tells Scarlett "how it is going to be" after the war - and when the Union army comes through - and sort of opens her eyes.

And I want a scene where Butler tells Scarlett how much alike she is with Belle Watling - two girls who know what the men want and are happy to serve it up for profit.

And it needs some scene with Jefferson Davis discussing things - causes, situations, Lincoln. Maybe even a scene where Butler meets with him and refuses to take a spot as a General - a much better reason to be a pariah than just "not being a gentleman."

My favorite line stays in - "better refugee south right quick ma'am."

Mitchell missed the boat.

I’d like to change the script and cast Clint Eastwood as Rhett Butler

“Where should I go? What shall I do? I might simply take my own life”

“Go ahead, make my day”.

I think the one truth everyone is failing to notice is that Gone With The Wind could never be remade. Taken out of context, it's not that great of a film. The story around its tortured production, its ambition, and the lasting effects of its immense popularity upon release, could never be repeated. No matter who you put in the roles, the result would never be able to capture the magic of the original, because that magic would be based on factors that would no longer be relevant.

Dakota Johnson as Scarlett. Sex scenes.

You're so much fun...

Not sure I would go that far, but yeah, it's not the epic it was considered at the time.
Of the early celebrated movies, Wings had great effects so I give it an advantage. Citizen Kane isn't that good but Kane is over an hour shorter so Kane is much better than Wind. It just wasted less of my time. King Kong was good and deserves mention as an early classic.

Casablanca uses the same love triangle of the lady choosing between a rogue and a good guy but is far better than Wind. Of course 40 years later Star Wars added incest to that plot device.

While we are recasting it, can we rewrite it so that it is, uhm, good? I am thinking an Airplane!/Naked Gun-esque comedy.
I wouldn’t want a comedy. I want a darker truth. Tell it like Grant told it - that most in the south owned no slaves, and a vote on secession would have failed in 1860 and 1861, but that the elite and powerful and media prevented “a fair and calm expression of opinion, unbiased by threats.” That story can be told if you make romance secondary to deeper political discussions of Butler, Wilkes, some others. A guy like Wilkes could see the inevitable complete destruction that maintaining slavery would bring. Butler can be a guy who always believed “ALL men are created equal” and pisses in the face of the hypocrisy.

Maybe call it “The Coming Wind of The Confederacy”
