Two games into league play and we are 1-1. Penn State beats Illinois in Champagne. Rutgers got hosed on a call in Columbus or they win on the road. Nebraska damn near knocks off Purdue in Lincoln. I think the competition in the league is as strong as been in 20 years. Always a grind, but at another level this season. Whover wins the league will do it with 4-5 losses. What say you on the number of wins IU has in league play?

Hard to see us avoiding 6 or 7 losses when you look at our road schedule.
It’s the same schedule as most every other season. Health is becoming a story line as usual. Our best guard has now missed three straight games and I do not think Trace is 100%. Scoop is stepping up along with Trey, AKa The Wolf, and Miller is becoming the outside threat we had hoped for. Inside game has become the issue of late. No matter the opponent or location, this team has to BRING IT every game if we want to compete for a league title.

Bumping this thread to try and get to 100 votes. Appears the board on avg sees a 12-8 conference record at this point in the poll.

51 votes and board has us at 11.8 wins or 12-8 in league play. If you are reading this and have yet to vote, weigh in!

Bumping this back up so we can get to 100+. It would be interesting to do this annually, but do one before any games and after 2 games of B1G play every season. My guess is the polls would swing mightily depend upon timing around a win or a loss. If we beat KU, I anticipate the prediction to swing heavily toward more wins and should we lose, stay the same as now or trend a little down. If you have made it this far and still yet to vote, weigh in!

Through 65 votes, the board voters are expecting a 12-8 conference record. This would likely be good enough for around 6th place.

12-8 would have tied for 4th last year and been 5th in the conference the year before that.

I did not look up history. Thanks for sharing. Time will tell this season. I am less concerned with the finish than I am the record. I think less than 12 wins would be considered a disappointment. 13 would be good and anything above that would be considered great. Particularly with us already sitting with one loss.

Thanks for sharing that. I had not looked it up and just went back and checked it out. Man have we been bad. Trace has not had a winning record in the league play since arriving in Bloomington. Twice we have had 9 wins. Freshman season and last season. 2 years ago we had 7 wins in league play. The wins are out there, this team just needs to step it up and go and win them!

to go from 9 wins to a 12 win season with this team just doesn't seem like enough. B10 is tuff and we are not 100% healthy so it could happen.

I would say 12-8. We dont normally win on the road. We can be good but so far we really dont seem that much better than last year imo. 22-11 going into the btt for the overall record.

I think like usual lately, the first team to 14 wins it.

We can still get there, but certainly an uphill battle right now with the injuries and our up & down play so far.

This isn't true for every B1G program or year, but I think we are missing that first round draft pick or lottery pick to solidify us as a team to win the B1G. Looking back at 2013 (Cody & Vic) and 2016 (OG, Thomas, throw in Yogi).

'22 - ILL, WIS - Johnny Davis
'21 - UM - Franz Wagner
'20 - MD, MSU, WIS - Jalen Smith
'19 - MSU, PU - Carsen Edwards
'18 - MSU - Jaren Jackson, Miles Bridges

and so on... I know, duh you need a couple NBA level guys to compete for a B1G title, but for IU this year, they don't have that lottery pick player that moves this team from a 12-13 conference win finish to a 16-17 conference win finish.

I put 13...that should have us flirting with top 4. Our problem will be that we're not consistent enough to beat the bottom teams consistently on the road. We're a better basketball team, overall, than teams like Wisconsin, Michigan State, etc... Heck, we might be better than Purdue. But using Purdue and Wisconsin as examples...neither played great in their first conference road games, they still figure out how to get the wins though. When IU plays poorly, we lose. So...while I doubt we'll lose many more than 1 home conference game, if any. I think we'll lose a chunk of road games on top of the obvious tough ones.

Maybe...a healthy JHS could change that narrative. He looked very "lottery pick-ish" against UNC.

Not all road games are equal. That was a good win for WI, but PU's road win was NB, in OT. Not as tough as Iowa or Rutgers.

The NEXT game is always the most important game!!

No, for sure not. Just making the point that Wisconsin and Purdue elevate themselves in standings most years by figuring out ways to win games like that. IU hasn't shown that they will.

If JHS comes back, and plays all the remaining games, and we see consistency with our play, obviously we're capable of winning more than 13. At our best, we're the best team in the conference, probably by a long shot. We just don't play to our best as frequently as the Wisky's and Purdue's do.

Kind of doubt that. I don't think our best beats Duke or Gonzaga by 20 outside of AH. Or maybe in it.

Not sure. Our best beats Purdue's best though. Their guards/wings wouldn't be able to handle a game like we played against UNC.

I’ll say we finish with 6 losses*.

Last week our SOS was pretty bad, especially compared to other B10 teams. After Arizona we jumped from 296 to 170 (per KP), and the KU game will be a big boost. We finish the NC portion out with 2 cupcakes. I’m a little concerned seeing how our SOS stacks up against the rest of the conference. Consistency is going to be key, and we cannot afford off nights. No “Elons” in the B10.

*edit, 9-1 at home, 5-5 on the road

Duke and Gonzaga are both probably better than UNC.
UNC has one of the best backcourts in the country, markedly better than Duke, Gonzaga, or Purdue for that matter. IU made them look scared and unfit. Purdue couldn't do that to UNC.

I'll take it a step further...Purdue has yet to play a backcourt that would even approach top 50 status (if backcourts were ranked).

I think Smith is solid, and Loyer is too...but IU playing defense like we did against UNC would not work out well for those guys. And they can't win without those 2.

Anyone can say anything. Do you have actual data to backup these claims?

My eyeballs. Which sends information to my brain. Where its stored for various lengths of time...as very, very accurate personal data.

Its early in the year yet, I'd be wary of the actual "data" anyways. Kind of like I'd be wary of people expecting Purdue to play like the number 1 team in the country all year...if I were unfortunate enough to be a PU fan.

I took 12. We have not had a winning record in the big ten since 2015/2016. That's a span of 6 seasons. Very poor to be honest. I just don't see this team being dramatically better than previous squads. I do believe the pieces are there and the development of Reneau and Scoop may be the most important pieces to us having a run. Cannot expect Race to shoot like he did vs AZ on a regular basis. Prior to the AZ game, I believe he was 3-18 from three. Fino has to get and stay healthy and if Trace declines in health, we are in trouble. I picked us to win 12 games and I think given this team's dynamics and history, it's a good result, but not great. 13 would be good to see and anything above that would be awesome. I have just been down this road so many times on placing my bets on hope and not objectively looking at the team. We are now 10 games into the season and know what we have in place and what needs to improve. The things that we can control like attitude and effort could win us a few games. This team has to BRING IT every night and be hungry. I just hope we can stay healthy and win enough to get into the tourney and then go on a run. Here's to hoping! Cheers.

You know Love and Davis are shooting 25% & 27% from three respectively, right? They are a great backcourt on reputation only. Ask any UNC fan.

That includes IUs game. And they were arguably the best backcourt in the country the last 5-6 weeks of the season last year. Slow start to be sure, but it’s not like they completely forgot how to play ball. They’ll pick it back up.

They actually eclipsed that percentage against you. I think they will improve as well but there are a lot of people nationally questioning by how much. Something just seems off with both of them. Bacot is at least injured but Love and Davis…..woof!

In other words. You do not. Lol

I checked 13. I think this Vegas game and the Kansas game will prepare this team for the upcoming B1G road games. Plus, they’ll get JHS back and will get better as a team than what we’ve seen the last couple weeks without him.

11 seems like a solid guess. I'd be shocked at fewer than 10 or more than 13.
Yeah I joined you at 11 wins, and fourth or fifth place in the conference. I mirror earlier concerns with Trayce possibly more hurt than we know, and not really knowing when we will see JHS again.

I think that people underestimate how solid a player Indiana Mr. Basketball is. Remember when Knight had a lock on them!

Yep, esp in the first half. Thing I love most about JHS - he comes to play and he met NC’s intensity from the tip.

I chose 13 but that’s based on a healthy Trayce and JHS’ return to 100%. 10 wins, if neither of these scenarios materialize.

Still think we’re better than Minn, NW, and Michigan in our current state, even on the road. But, we’ll have to wait and see.
