Hoop coaches are coming out saying that NIL is out of control.

NIL is what it is. Before that kids were getting paid under the table, which was also “out of control.”

With rev share starting and players signing contracts with schools to play basketball — if anything things are trending towards being more “under control.”

And yea coach salaries/buyouts keep going up very fast too… and not a peep.

We may see the dissolution of the NCAA. The top conferences are so large now that if five or so decided to go a different direction then bye bye NCAA. The NCAA of course knows that and will try very hard not to piss them off.

NIL was supposed to be name image likeness payment. That’s not what’s happening. It’s just pay to play.

I have no problem with players getting paid. But it needs some hard boundaries and a salary cap structure.
I'm waiting for the first college player Who is projected to be an NBA 1st Rounder to return to School because They can make more money on NIL in College than They can on an NBA Rookie Contract.

The portal is worse for college athletics than NIL. The ncaa tournament is losing luster, no more Cinderella stories due to the smaller schools be picked over for players by the big schools.
Yes. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I've been getting the same feeling as I had through the years (decades) of debate on the high school class system in Indiana. I guess the Milan runs were too few. I knew a lot of guys who played at small high schools and they said that just winning a sectional game or better against a big school was a huge thrill & worth it.
I'm already tired of college announcers telling me about Joe Smith who's playing his third year at his third different school too. That's going to be most players very soon.

Anyone with common sense knew allowing players to be paid would be exploited by those schools that were already getting around the rules and blowing the system up so bad there could be no enforcement. The NCAA threw up their hands and I doubt they really care where the money is coming from or for what purpose. When was the last time you heard of an NCAA violation ? Anything goes now.

I didn't think the NIL and portal would get this bad, but I knew it would end ruin the college basketball I loved. I've said for years the NCAA is either corrupt or the laziest organization ever and replaced.

Yep and look at attendance of these games. They have been terrible.

I've thought the same thing. If you can't prevent the players from being paid, is possible to at least prevent them from transferring so often?

I’ve heard this will be the worst year because everyone needs to blow out their collectives before the house ruling. Why football was so insane.

The portal is killing college athletics. There are situations that make kids uncoachable.

I don't buy the lack of Cinderella having to do with NIL. There have been other chalk years. But to your point, mid-majors are not sustainable moving forward. Those schools will start eliminating sports very soon.

They will still get paid under the table.

There's a bit of schadenfreude to hear millionaire coaches gripe about players utilizing the same avenues they've had for decades regarding movement and money making.

The big $$$ buyouts were supposed to slow down coach movement, but except in the most crazy situations, the "buying" programs are still willing to pay.

Little will change -- they'll remain second tier programs, and as always will have a handful of players move up. What will change is they will now be able to at least pay a stipend to their players that won't make them wealthy, but will make it worth their while to stay in school and play ball.

Indiana just set a record buyout amount for a coach who hasn't made it out of the round of 64. The money is flowing and will continue to do so. Disappointing in light of the athletic department cutting positions to shore up for revenue sharing. IU boosters could easily make up the difference of not putting the max to the players buyout.

Interestingly enough, I feel like NIL has been detrimental in basketball but also our salvation in football so far. Kind of the opposite of what I expected going in…
The NIL and portal will work well for good coaches. The coaches that struggle with it are those that go after the highest price tag without any research done on fit and how to mesh a collection of all new players, like a certain recently “retired” IU coach.

I don't know how many of you remember professional roller derby and wrestling on TV. They had teams that battled every week. One of the things about it was that these pros changed uniforms regularly....and played for the other team (the Chiefs instead of the Bombers).... Sort of like professional tag team wrestling...where one team member leaves...walks across the ring and joins the opponents team after the announcers cite an internal dispute. Is that where we are going with the portal and NIL? Hell, by the time the jerseys are printed with a player's name on it....he's on to the next college.

The financial value of the college athlete who is enrolled in Basket-Weaving 101 is much greater to the college than the medical student who will be a pediatric surgeon saving lives. To add insult to injury.....the medical student will pay his own way. I don't make the rules....and I don't like them.
Nobody is buying season tickets or streaming subscriptions to watch the surgeon work. It is what it is, I don't really like it either.

I disagree. Even some big time athletic programs will have a hard time supporting all sports when rev share kicks in. Maybe you are referring to just basketball.

Some will be making more than nba players

"but I knew it would end ruin the college basketball I loved"

What has ruined college basketball for me has been the NBA Play.

Traveling, Carrying the ball, Palming, Moving Screens, "Euro Steps".... and in some sense.... the Shot Clock.

Sure not like the days of old.

I think I posted in here before about the SHOT CLOCK. Without the shot clock... it was a STRATEGY to wear down your opponent with a moving offense... to get them to make a mistake so that you could capitalize on that mistake to score easily.

Then all the NBA fans called that style of play... BORING. Not me..... I called it a well oiled machine to win a game,

NIL, the Portal and the NBA have ruined college basketball.

Oats would have been snapped up by now if not for his buyout.
