Thinks if Dusty May makes another good run in the tournament IU has to make a decision on whether to just dump Woodson now and go after May before he gets snatched up by Louisville. He also thinks Woodson is going to find it very difficult to convince portal talent to choose a school that’s head coach has essentially one year. Why come to IU with this mess, when you have options? That’s a good point.

Who cares what that PUke thinks?

The problem with making money the paramount reason to come to IU isn’t that we won’t be able to get good players. The problem is the type of players, and what their motivations and goals are. Not to mention the motivations and goals of those that are paying them and their influence over the program.

Nil can be a great thing that a program can offer.

But, we’ve lost control of the program, and the control that the boosters have is fueling the dumpster fire. And no one seems to see it.

More money is just more fuel for the boosters to pour on the fire. 🔥.

iF I'm a booster,I'm keeping my money until Woodson is gone and replaced with a competent coaching staff and head coach.

Can't disagree. I'm not sure money er um NIL will be enough to get quality out of the portal. Last year they whiffed on quite a few and the ones that came were somewhat marginal beyond Ware (my opinion, your mileage may vary). IU needs to plan for the next 10-15 years. It is time to say adios to Woodson and see if May or someone else might want to take a crack at a 6th banner at IU.

to your final point. if he gets canned this year they can just transfer again

We need a good blend of portal guys that only have a year of eligibility, AND some guys with multiple years. That would help to balance out the roster a little bit. That's going to be a struggle with Woody's future being so murky. 1 year guys, especially bigger guys, we'll be very attractive still, I assume. High level guards and multi year guys are going to be a serious challenge.

and therein is the problem. This year no guards with a shot sank this team time and time again. I can't say that Galloway or Cupps are going to change that dynamic next year. Newton is sort of a wild card. Guess we will see how the rest of the portal period shakes out but if MM or MR leave then I don't see the core to build around being very strong.

Do you assume that the booster is paying the player with the ultimate goal of winning more games?

Let me put it this way: There have been reports that the boosters are upping their game, that at least some are fully behind Woodson.

It’s possible that these boosters are loving the fact that he is coach. Perhaps they finally have what they have always desired: maybe that’s control, maybe it’s a payday after seeing a Ware or JHS “pop”, maybe it’s access?

And what happens if they bring in a coach with a personality that will shut down that access, that control, and that power?

Apparently Doyle believes that everyone that didn't get the untested/unproven vax, is (gasp!) crazy and shouldn't be allowed to voice an opinion. Just like sports writers. THEY NEVER ARE ALLOWED TO VOICE AN OPINION. That the good Dr. Fauci who believes that the virus that killed thousands and thousands of people just appeared out of nowhere (while at the same time the good Dr. made a killing himself by teaming up with some lab in China... "just coincidence") is a modern day messiah, and anyone who questions anything the good Dr. says "makes everyone unsafe." You know... just be a good little socialist and shut your mouth... or else.

covid shots. It's all doyel wrote about for about a year.
"Get your covid shot... get your booster covid shot... get your booster to your booster covid shot... get your booster to the booster to the other booster covid shot... or we'll come and take your job away, take your family away, take your future away... because you've made us all unsafe!" - The Animal Farm

You mean like Knight did when he became coach?

I believe he banned boosters from the locker room and pissed off a lot of old-timers at the time.

The thing that makes me both optimistic, and frustrated, is watching all these tournament games...NCAA and NIT. Basically every single team has at least 1 "stud" guard, that would immediately help our team out immensely.

The Ford kid from Montana State last night would start for us, and be one of the best PG's we've had since Yogi...as an example. Grambling has multiple guards that would help us. I know Colorado is closer to being a peer of ours...but their PG would be our best player...

Point is...there are probably HUNDREDS of guards out there that would help us immensely.

Yes, and let’s not forget that coaching matters, too.

There are so many players in the portal that would help, I tend to think we scrap together a roster that will be on the edge of the tourney next year.

But then again last year we couldn’t get a guard in the portal. How? And the whole X and Gallo returning reason doesn’t work. So confusing.

For sure it does. But why we haven't had a Robert Ford type of guard since Woody arrived? Its incredibly frustrating.

Time might be making me softer...but I'm starting to come back to the thought on how damaging the combination of JHS leaving was, and X having a horrible year with the injuries and with his play. Woody has failed to build any semblance depth at the guard position, and that failure can't be discounted. But thinking back to recruiting during the last couple offseasons...until late in the season last year, Woody had to be banking on having both JHS and X this year. No one had JHS as a 1st round NBA guy coming out of HS. That doesn't account for him not bringing in any portal guards last offseason...and that was a huge failure. But it can partially explain our depth issues.

Its leaving a small spot in my brain for the possibility that Woody will focus heavily on guards, and will show an ability to get the right kinds of guards, via late HS and Portal kids. Its possible the last time WOODY thought recruiting guards was a huge priority...he was able to land guys like JHS, Cupps, Newton, etc...

Just scrounging in the cushions for little bits of optimism...

I’ve been thinking the same thing. The high school recruiting rating guys are mostly useless. There are so many good players out there now that makes it imperative that a college coaching staff has a keen eye for talent and who fits their playing style. And also that coaching staff HAS to have the communication skills to sell the program to these kids. The IU coaching staff seems to have little to none of those skills.
In addition to having the coaching acumen, I hope the next coach has a dynamic personality and energy that can sell the program and recruit. Because Woodson and Archie were duds in that department.

I'd like to see us get the Walker kid from EKU as he is a two year guy. Doesn't do us much good to get 6 grad transfers if Woody's gone after 1 year. I just assume that most everyone that would commit to us for 2 years at this point would have some Indiana connection.

Then get a taller grad transfer PG or combo guy to compete with Cupps & Walker. for 1 year.

Like business, you win on price and you lose on price but the most consistent and successful model of business is through relationships.

What’s this have to do with Doyel believing Woodson is a lame duck and portal guys are going to shy away and chose differently?
