had 42 points for bethel college and the #3 top play on SC posterizing someone on a transition dunk.

WHAT

Is there a rule once you leave IU you get better and make the tournament? Unreal how many players do this after transferring. I know nothing about bethel, hell I don’t even know if they are D 1, but they will make the tourney some how.

Bethel is NAIA, the bottom of the college barrel.

Is it on today, 12/29/19, Sports Center?

If he were still at IU, he would be sitting. Bethel basketball would be like a good intramural team at IU.

yes on this mornings. #3. I thought there would be zero chance he could ever dunk like that. Or score 42 against any team including HS or naia

Hey now. My wife played for Bethel. I’m going to tell her. You’re in trouble. . Not the best competition but it was a joy watching her play. Plus, I get to tell people my wife played college basketball.

You lost me at Bethel College. You might as well have said, the old farts playing on the Tyndall Armory court who think they still “got game.”

I signed up to play on a bowling team with friends and bowled a 236. I rarely bowled over 150. Sometimes you get in a groove and can't miss. The game after the 236 was a 109. Gelon will never forget that game and look back on how it felt to be really good for a moment in time.

As far as Bethel goes, my cousin pitched there in the 80's and was an 11th round draft pick by Toronto. D2 USI has a player in the G League. If you can play, pro teams will find you.

Hell, I once scored 42 down my basement somehow and I didn’t even have an opponent to face me.

And there were probably just about as many fans in your basement as those in the stands for Gelon's jam from what I could see on Sportscenter.

I once bowled a 223, 217 and 186 series, which according to my math qualities for the coveted "600 series". I think I had 5 strikes in a row, a spare and then another strike...something insane like that because I was just an occasional bowler, sometimes after church with my folks, never in a league when I was in junior high or high school. My previous high was probably no greater than 175 or so. When I was at IU, we had to take phys ed, paired as two six weeks established activities. I wanted to learn handball and it was paired with bowling. For the bowling part, you'd bowl one game at the Union each session and at the end of the grading period, the cutoff for an "A" was a 150 avg. Well, on the last day, I was averaging 149 and bowled a 165 (or so) under pressure to salvage my "A". I've probably only bowled a handful of times since, but I can always say I bowled a "600 series". Your bowling aberration reminded me of mine. It was just a fluke, the bowling groove I got in after church that one day.

Not even close, the Crossroads League that they play in is one of the (probably the) best small school conferences in the country. Several D1 transfers, Indiana Al Stars, and future pros play in that league. In 98 when Valpo went to the sweet 16, Bethel actually beat them at Valpo in a game that really was not very close.

Oh, I bet you had joy watching her play. lol I've known some folks who went to Bethel. One young man works for Notre Dame and wants to someday be a GM for the Cubs. There are some quality people coming out of that school your wife included. Have a great new year.

I've mentioned it before, but the Indiana All Stars had a Jr/Sr scrimmage at VU the season my cousin coached there. He wanted to see Gelon because he wasn't on VU's list of target recruits and wondered how IU had offered him a scholarship when he wasn't on a juco's radar. After watching the scrimmage he determined Gelon was only on the All Star team because he was an IU recruit. He thought a D2 program might take him, but he wouldn't be more than a rotation player. He wasn't quick enough to guard a smaller juco guard and not physical enough to guard a front court juco player.

It appears some have elevated gelon and Luke brown to the IU back court of the future. Soon they will both have all big ten potential and grow 5 inches each.

1998? Are you serious?

1998? Are you serious?

Well the overall depth and quality of basketball in that conference is better now than it was then. Bethel is one of the most successful and respected small school programs in the country, and the conference they play in is loaded. Just to point it out, here is the history of the National Championship games in their division.

2019- Spring Arbor wins (their Conference)
2018--Indiana Wesleyan beats St Francis (both Crossroads Conference)
2016--IWU over St Francis (both Crossroads Conference)
2014--IWU
2011--St. Francis is runner up
2009--St FRANCIS WINS
2006--Huntington is runner up
1995-99--Bethel wins 3 titles, and loses another in OT
1992 Grace wins the Championship

Looking at National Rankings

2019-20--currently 6 in top 17, Bethel 9
2019--finished with 5 in top 20--Bethel 20
2018--4 finished in top 25--Bethel 18
2017--4 in top 25 (2 in top 4)--Bethel 3rd
2016--3 in top 13 (top 2)--Bethel 13
2015--4 in top 20--Bethel 16
2014--4 in top 20--Bethel 10

To say they would be the equivalent of a good intramural team at IU is just plain ignorant, it is a very high level of basketball, obviously not the high or mid major D1 level, but way better than you give them credit for. That conference is stacked with former D1 players and Indiana All Stars. Actually Nathan Childers, who ended up at IU as a preferred walk on, original committed to Bethel.

42 is 42, anywhere any how.

This is not true...I put up some points on occasion...and would never pretend that it compared to a D1/Big Ten level achievement....

Good ballers at NAIA, D3, etc. Much respect.

But managing a corner grocery store ain't leading Wal-Mart (apologies to Ross Perot).

I doubt that you have ever seen a championship game in IU's intramural league. The leap from Bethel level to competitive D1 is insurmountable. That is why there are former D-1's playing NAIA basketball.

Yep seen several, in fact by just a few points missed playing in one. I would say the gap between high major and top level NAIA is smaller than the gap as the gap between an Intramural team and the top level NAIA teams.

Do see see rec league all stars making a living playing the game, where as you see a lot of NAIA guys making a living playing overseas

A lot of D1 talent playing NAIA ball.
How many Indiana All-State players are playing intramural basketball?

A lot? Please name these players on rosters this year. Gelon is NOT one of them.

Not just this year, but looking back a few years for just a handful of the crossroads league teams

Bethel--GG, IU. Clay Yeo, Valpo, Dylan Guiseppi VCU (was walk on there, but still was at VCU)

IWU--Tanner Rubio (Jacksonville), Evan Maxwell (Kansas), Joel Okafor (Bradley), Sam McCracken (Austin Peay), Grant Evans (Wright St), Johnny Marlin (IPFW/IU), RJ Mahurin (Ind St) and Kyle Mangus and Jasob Johnson were Indiana All Stars

St Francis--Chandler White (Toledo)

Marian--NIck Rodgers (IUPUI), Cameron Wolter (UMass Lowell), Johnathon Mwankwo (Kent State), TJ Henderson (IUPUI), Reggie Kissoonlal (NW State).

Grace had Bruce Grimm Jr from Middle Tennessee St sometime recently as well.

There is 15-20 over the last few years from just half of one conference in addition to a couple other Indiana All Stars.

Not that it is included in the discussion, but CJ McCollum's brother who has played on Overseas Elite in each of The Basketball Tournaments played at Goshen College and is still playing professionally overseas.

If those guys were legit D1 talent they would have remained at the D1 programs where they began.

We used to attend Bethel games on occasion when we lived in Michiana. A few of our kids friends played there. There were High School teams from the DAC or NLC that could have beaten Bethel.

An enduring myth. I am from the area and know better. Hyperbole over the top I have been hearing for over 50 years. There may occasionally be really good high school team or intramural team that could compete but both are pretty rare.

Have lived in Northern Indiana my entire life, the ONLY NIC/NLC/DAC team that could have played with the better Crossroads league teams is the Jamar Johnson/Shawn Kemp Concord team. Obviously that would be simple because they would have a kid on the floor that NAIA teams could not math up with. Not from that conference, but the ECC team with E'Twan Moore, Angel Garcia and Kawaan Shortt may have been another
