Goodman.

In my opinion (which I don’t know shit), there are only 2 coaches to pick from. Beard or McCollum. Problem is Beard would say yes, but may not get asked. McCollum might get asked, but IU may not be on his final radar(Iowa). Back to just settling I guess. Did I mention I am really enjoying my season tickets to football!
I think too much is made about the Iowa connection. When you are a young coach working up the ranks then you aspire to the major program you know, but life changes and so do your dreams. May wanted to be IUs coach apparently. Then he got offered a good gig and his aspirations changed. It’s not like NFL players are all signing with their childhood team.

We all know we're not what we were.

But it's still a top 20 job, maybe top 10.

The school is awesome. Town is great. Fans care. Rich history.

And we pay.

We just need to make a good call for once.
A good coach that can awaken this sleeping giant and compete for BIG titles and consistently, at least, get us to sweet sixteens and this is back to being a top 5 job in the country.

So you REALLY think that fans bitching on boards is going to influence a guy contemplating the IU job?
Especially enough to say no to 5 mill dollars?
And how many people really participate regularly here? A few dozen? Maybe more are lurkers. But it's not a big number relative to the overall fan base.

Good analogy.

I don't think any coach worth their salt is going to turn down millions, a big NIL, being in the Big Ten (top 2 conference) etc because the fans boo a mediocre coach.

If they were that fragile then they wouldn't be in the coaching profession.

I'm frequently surprised at how loyal IU fans are. They've hung in there was 28 years, put up with more than their fair share of s***, and keep coming backing for more. Latest example: Saturday's attendance and involvement in the game. Anybody who argues that any part of this mess is on the fans has their head up their ass.

Are we sure Dusty ever wanted to be IUs coach? It's a compelling story, but the idea that we missed out on him because we didn't move on from Woody last year isn't necessarily true. If that was the case he would still be a candidate now and 7.5m wouldn't matter. There's a strong likelihood that whomever takes the job has already or soon will be eliminated from the search by an "insider."

Sounds like years ago he did but who knows about the last couple years the job has tons of pressure and archie did not handle it well. Maybe he wants no part of the fishbowl.

Would we be considered the equivalent of the college basketball version of the Cubs fans?

How is AH a terrible arena?
Not worth replying to that fella.

Indiana basketball coach is an insanely good job.
I'd take it right now, work 15 hours a day, take only $200k and give the rest to the library like Knight used to do.

Most Big Ten jobs are very good for basketball coaches. It's a premier college basketball destination with millions of fans. What a great thing.

Unless there is some unknown elite candidate who emerges late in the game a la Cignetti.
And people scoffed at Cignetti. Tried to say he wasn’t a big hire. Said he’d fail bringing JMU kids here.

IU basketball doesn’t deserve a big hire. It stinks. Entitlement program. Give me the bright basketball mind.

UNC and UK didn’t exactly pull in huge names to replace their guys. They are entirely more relevant than IU over the last 30 years.

Woodson is about 12th highest paid with his 0.500 ball.

I could see them paying the next coach less, but if it is a "big hire", they will pay more and IU will win and it will be well worth it.

I'd rather put money into the coach than the players.

That would be the smart move, him or Texas Techs coach. Maybe take a chance on Drake coach but Indiana is long past the time to be able to take a chance. They need a guarantee.
I disagree, I think their only shot is to take a chance. Assuming they can't get Pearl, Wright, Stevens... Hiring a proven middle tier guy like Brownell will get the same results he's had for 15 years at Clemson. We fire coaches with those results. So might as well take a chance on younger potentially great guy, if you have to do this again in 4 years you're no worse off.

This is where I'm at. The only risk I see with McCollum is he's such a good basketball coach, that pretty much no matter what, he'll win enough to keep his job at IU for a very long time... But if, for some reason, his approach and style don't jive with NBA level talent, we'll have ourselves a Purdue/Wisconsin like program. It sounds lovely now, compared to what we've had, but get in to years 4,5,6 of having teams that "look" like those teams...that we know have little chance at a natty, despite winning 14-15 B10 games... And we'll all start to get pretty ancy.

But man, like Ive said a bunch of times, what if he's actually made for high major coaching? What if his positive player driven approach resonates with all the right kinds of NBA level kids, and he continues to be good at picking the right ones...

I've learned through the years to not get my hopes up on things like this. It'll end up being someone like Brownell, if not the guy himself.
