WSJ reporting that GM has at least 20 million vehicles with airbags that have an inflator that could cause injury or death.

Article is paywalled, but the 30k foot view is that the inflators could explode and send shrapnel into the upper torso, neck and face of the vehicle's occupants. NHTSA hasn't released all the details such as makes, models and years yet but it goes back to the 2000 model year and the number could go higher than the estimated 20M. 11 other manufacturers also have exposure in addition to GM, including Ford and Toyota, but not to the extent that GM is exposed.

ARC Automotive is the supplier of the faulty inflators and they're refusing to recall them.

Makes you wonder how that will affect the UAW strike negotiations. GM stock is down on the news.

USA Today says it’s 914 total vehicles worldwide, 767 in the US.

767 vehicles is peanuts in a recall scenario. Finding suitable replacement inflators could be tricky.

767 vehicles is peanuts in a recall scenario. Finding suitable replacement inflators could be tricky.

NHTSA estimates that one out of every 370,000 inflators are defective. The issue is you don't know which ones are defective, so you have to recall them all. So, while the actual defective number may be small, the total affected by the recall is substantial.

GM has already done multiple recalls over this, including one this year that affected 1M Buick and Chevy SUVs.

Our Accord was part of a recall of Takata airbags with a similar issue. Honda set aside Billions to fix 13M vehicles.

NHTSA is now saying 50M is the total recall number
