In an article today, there is this quote:

"Strength coach Clif Marshall tweeted in August 2021 that Geronimo had gained 22 pounds in the last year.
Geronimo works out with trainer Isaac Green every time he’s in the gym. Green keeps him motivated, telling him to go hard every single time, Geronimo says. So, he keeps at it.

“This program is really good at building their players up,” Geronimo said."

Geronimo has the kind of work ethic needed to succeed at the major college level. While I don't know if all of the scholarship players work this hard or don't, do we see anything that would indicate Lander has the same work ethic? Lander has had two years to get there and isn't close. A guy who came out of high school with the ratings and presumed skill set Lander had just hasn't shown anything. Why?

When Woodson looks at his roster, he needs to objectively determine if he has players with that work ethic and if not, encourage them to go elsewhere. The culture needs to support that as well. Anyone remember what Baylor players looked like when they won the national championship? Bates needs to get there too. Woodson said Duncomb needed weight and strength. The culture needs to be there to get players physically developed while at the same time developing shot making skills.

Man, as an IU fan, I'm so tired of hearing about the great work our players put in over the summer and how much weight they've put on (always all muscle too!) or how much they've improved their bench, or vertical or, O2 level... (remember that with Sheehey?). All good college players work to improve over the summer; show it in performance. Geronimo was the most athletic player on our roster and had that great off-season and yet still struggled to find minutes on this roster. Why? That's what I'm hoping he works on this summer.

but but but....Justin Smith increased his vertical to 78 inches and Sheehey ran a 2 minute mile on the treadmill while wearing a gas mask.....yeah none of that really ever equated to better shooting, smarter play or higher B1G finishes, did it?

Get me shooters who play smart and know how to defend and rebound.

The reason that Geronimo struggled to get minutes was that while he is really good player with really strong skill set, his skills are exclusively at the 4 position and was stuck behind Race who was probably IU's most consistent player, and 3rd best overall, who never got in foul trouble, and who averaged 12 pts and 8 rebounds in conference play.

Geronimo occasionally did play the 3, but it never worked well. He picked up fouls trying to guard smaller players and with Race/TJD also on the floor it pushed him away from the basket neutralizing his rebounding ability and second chance scoring.
