Gaetz for AG

I think the point is, what point is there in following the Constitution when your political opponents ignore it?

I don't agree with temporarily appointing a Cabinet member for however many days, but recess appointments are covered in the Constitution, although with conditions, of course.

This is the danger of Democrat lawfare. When you find clever ways to circumvent the Constitution, don't be surprised when Republicans play that game. It's not right, but you can't expect one side to follow one set of rules and the other side another.

Because it doesn't matter if Republicans follow the Constitution - Democrats gonna Democrat.
Republicans gonna do it...blame it on the Libs.

What a bullshit, cowardly argument.

Is it wrong for people who have broken the law to face consequences? You are assuming they’ve done nothing wrong. Let it play out before casting judgement.
Don't politicize DOJ.

You think the other party did it? Cool, call them out on it. Run against it (Repubs just did). Sue civilly if possible against the right officials. But don't do what you accuse the other side of doing that you called wrong, immoral, unconstitutional, etc.

That makes you a hypocrite and no better than those you find so abhorrent.

This is a right not a wrong. There will be massive investigations. If they broke the law like we think they did accountability is a coming.

A message has to be sent. If you target innocent Americans and violate their Constitutional rights you will go to prison.
Who is going to be investigated? What laws do you think they broke and which innocent Americans did they target and violate their rights?

You don’t believe in the rule of law? Aren’t you a lawyer? If they broke the law, they should face the consequences. You don’t like the optics. That’s fine. Doesn’t make it “wrong”.

Wait and see. We have no idea what will transpire. But if they go after people that broke the law. That isn’t wrong.

Apparently. Trump is going to skate out of both federal cases and there’s very little doubt he broke the law - especially in the documents case.

Target what innocent Americans?

This is the thing. They’re certain someone broke the law but they don’t have a clue who did it or what laws they might have broken. It’s asinine.

Gaetz cannot be confirmed. Trump doesn’t need this guy to be AG. I think it will be pulled.

Trump can afford to lose the support of no more than three GOP senators on his most contentious picks, assuming all Democrats are opposed, in a chamber that will be split 53-47 in the new Congress. People familiar with discussions among Senate Republicans said that far more than three of them are prepared to vote no if the matter comes to a vote, and some said there was already talk of trying to convince Trump to pull Gaetz, or get Gaetz to voluntarily withdraw his name.

“It’s simply that Matt Gaetz has a very long, steep hill to get across the finish line,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R., N.D.). “And it will require the spending of a lot of capital, and you just have to ask: if you could get him across the finish line, was it worth the cost?”

Cramer said he didn’t think Gaetz would have the votes to be approved by the Judiciary Committee, much less to be confirmed by the full Senate.
One person familiar with the conversations among Republican senators said “significantly more than four” of them are opposed, which would be enough to tank Gaetz’s chances. “People are pissed,” the person said.

Other estimates ranged from more than a dozen Republican “no” votes to more than 30. “It won’t even be close,” another person said.

Gaetz will be confirmed.
No he won’t. Too many Republicans are already not going to vote to confirm. No Democrat will vote to confirm. Those Republicans and Democrats are right because Gaetz is a clown pick. The only way Gaetz can temporarily be AG is via recess appointment and the Republicans aren’t likely to allow that either - because he’s a clown pick. The only people that think he’s a serious pick who should be confirmed are the dupes. You’re a dupe so you think he’s all good.

Oh great. Now we're going to pretend Matt Gaetz is some kind of legal genius, too?

Again, I understand that. And Dems would be wise to understand that, as well. But you can't call yourself a Constitutionalist at that point.

Let me analogize: Jesus preaches that you love your enemies and turn the other cheek. If you believe that if your enemy does not do that to you, that you don't have to love them or turn the other cheek when they harm you, then you are not a follower of Jesus and don't believe his teachings. (This applies to a lot of internet posters who also claim to be Christian, by the way, as if the teachings don't apply on the internet or something.)

I'm not saying you have to be a Constitutionalist. To be one, comes with a cost. I'm just saying that if you believe it's OK to violate it if the other side does, then you aren't one.
I understand what you're saying and agree - in theory. Your example of Christianity is one of religion, not government. I choose to accept Christianity and its tenants - I didn't choose the Constitution, although I am damn glad I was born in the USA.

I'm a Constitutionalist if that's how government works. But that's not how it's been working. One side can't be expected to play by one set of rules not applied to the other.

What are they? Is Trump going to end them all?
Come on, Brad, we have bases all over the mid-East and Africa, running ops every day.

No, we're not in officially declared 'war', but we're fighting terrorism globally. The Pentagon didn't even release anything on the latest attack on our bases in Syria and Iraq.
